Patriots interested in Pacman?

Posted by Christopher L. Gasper, Globe Staff March 8, 2008 12:44 PM

The Patriots have had success rehabilitating players who were perceived as malcontents: first, Corey Dillon, then Randy Moss, now are they prepared to take on Adam "Pacman" Jones?

According to a report in the Tennessean newspaper, the Patriots are among the teams that have expressed some level of interest in the Tennessee Titans cornerback, who sat out all of last season after being suspended by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell for his wayward off-field behavior.

Jones, who was suspended in April 2007, remains suspended by the league, pending a review by Goodell, which could come as soon as next month, prior to the NFL Draft. Jones was the No. 6 overall pick in the 2005 draft. In 2006, he finished first in the NFL in punt return average (12.9 yards) and tied for the league lead with three punt returns for touchdowns. On defense, Jones started 15 games and intercepted four passes, returning one for a touchdown.

However, the seemingly incorrigible cornerback carries more baggage than Paris Hilton. He's been arrested six times since being drafted by the Titans and was at the center of a Las Vegas strip club melee in February 2007 that left a man paralyzed.

He's currently serving three years probation, stemming from an incident in Fayette County, Ga., where he was alleged to have bitten a police officer's hand. Jones cut a plea agreement with prosecutors last month, admitting to felony obstruction of a police officer.

Jones certainly has the talent to help replace departed Pro Bowl cornerback Asante Samuel, but Pacman's preferred destination appears to be Dallas.

  1. "...the seemingly incorrigible cornerback carries more baggage than Paris Hilton." I'm skeptical of the report. The other players who the Patriots have taken chances with were disgruntled about losing or playing in poor organizations. Adam Jones appears to be a magnet for trouble, is mostly about money and the suitable posse it can buy and is just a stupid human being. Talented? Yes (which is more than can be said about Ms. Hilton) but passionate about the game? It doesn't appear that way. This would be a genuine shocker if the report is true. More likely, the Titans trying to drive up the trade value and the Pats have a glaring hole at CB so they're feeding the media the connection.

  1. Mike, I guess you didn't read the entire report. I'm guessing if you did you would have added the update about David Givens.

"Givens update: Former Titans receiver David Givens continues to make progress in coming back from his left knee injury in '06, but he still might not get the green light to play this season. Givens had an appointment with Dr. James Andrews on Monday in Birmingham, Ala., but the doctor said Givens needs more time.

Givens had three surgeries on the knee, and the Titans cut him at the end of last month to avoid paying him a $500,000 roster bonus on March 1.

Other teams have inquired about Givens since his release, but no one is currently interested in signing him because he would be unable to pass a physical. At least some in the Titans organization don't think he'll play again."

  1. This is Pacman's agent trying to create value for a player whose stock is as low as it can get. They have nothing to saying some top teams are interested. If the Patriots expressed “some level if interest” in Pacman, I would categorize it as “hardly any level of interest.”

  1. Talent and brains are too different things. There are hundreds if not thousands of references in sports where a guy has a "million dollar body and a ten cent brain." Pacman is one of them. He's suspended by the NFL so he tries pro wrestling. I enjoy wreslting but it has a history of problems with illegal drugs including steriods and HGH. If he ends up with NE, they must have plans to give him a labotomy.

  1. Love the blog, but can we please please please stop referring to Corey Dillon as a malcontent?

95% of Dillon's eputation stems from a toxic relationship with a team run by one of the worst owners in sports. Its a gross exaggeration and should be beneath any remotely competent sports writer

  1. Let the Cowboy's have him! This is one of a few players that I cannot stand, who's characture is so bad he should not be allowed back into the NFL unless he's proven he has really changed. What a mess of a "man"!
I don't think bringing in someone to "replace" Samuel is top priority on defense. First, you can't replace him, just like Ty Law (and so many others) couldn't be replaced. You find someone with skills and smarts and let them fight for their lives to get the starting job. Will it be Webster? Meriweather? A yet-to-be-drafted rookie? Perhaps Scott? Someone still on the market? Who knows! But whoever it is will have to earn the role just like Samuel did. And Mr. Capers will help him along, I'm sure.
Second, top priority has got to be the Linebacker group, which needs a lot of help, especially if Seau retires.
So l hope Pacman Jones ends up elsewhere, perhaps in jail, where he can't bite police officer's hands.

  1. PacMan doesn't deserve to even play in the NFl, nevermind play for the Pats. NO NO NO! Are you listening Bill? NO! I would rather have a losing season than see this pitiful excuse for a human being on the team. There is no room for his ego on this team. There is no room in the fan's hearts to cheer for him.

We fans have endured so much over the past year. We have seen our beloved team's reputation dragged through the mud by an unscrupulous media. We have watched week after week as columnists called our team "evil," and watched them actively route against us. What was hailed as a proud franchise upholding all that is right and good has been made to be the villain now. Please do not rove them right by adding this felon to the team.

  1. You have GOT to be kidding me. Dillon and Moss was one thing, but taking a flyer on this guy would be taking it to another level. He is NOT worth the risk, DON'T DO IT!!!

  1. I for one, don't think Jones is worth the gamble. It's one thing to get a difficult personality late in their career, when they have made their money, who just want to prove the critics wrong, ala Moss and Dillion. However, it is another thing entirely to pick up a young, difficult, troubled personality like Pacman Jones. He may be an extremely gifted athlete but he doesn't seem eager, at this point, to change his ways.

  1. Just give each strip club in Boston his picture and do not allow him to enter the building. As long as he does not enter a strip club he will be fine!

  1. You'd have to be either out of your mind or desperate to buy into that bill of goods. Haven't noticed that either adjective applies to the Pats. Stay the course.

  1. Is this a Patriots type of player? Pacman is talented but look at what he has done in the past!!

July 13, 2005: Arrested for assault and felony vandalism after a nightclub fight.

Sept. 5, 2005: Police need to be summoned when Jones refuses to pay to have his car valet parked and begins shouting.

October, 2005: Jones cited in West Virginia for not making frequent enough contact with his probation officer or reporting his July arrest. His probation is extended for 90 days.

February, 2006: Subpoenaed for felony and misdemeanor obstruction of justice charges after an incident outside a Georgia home. Marijuana chargers were dismissed.

Aug. 25, 2006: Arrested for disorderly conduct and public intoxication in Murfreesboro, Tenn. He claimed woman stole his wallet. She denied it and claimed he spit on her. Police say he continued shouting profanities at her even after they told him to leave. He was given six months probation.

Oct. 26, 2006: Cited for misdemeanor assault for spitting in the face of a female student from Tennessee State at a Nashville nightclub. The Titans suspended him one game.

Feb. 19, 2007: At NBA All-Star weekend, the owner of a strip club told police that Jones slammed a dancer’s head on the stage after she tried to pick up the money he had thrown at her. A scuffle with a security guard ensued and Jones allegedly threatened his life. Shortly after leaving, a purported member of Jones’ posse returned to the club with a gun and fired into the crowd. The security guard was shot twice, while former pro wrestler Tommy Urbanski was struck and paralyzed from the waist down. On Dec. 6, Jones accepted a plea deal and pleaded no contest to one charge of conspiracy to commit disorderly conduct. He was given a suspended sentence of one year, probation, and told to perform 200 hours of community service.

April 10, 2007: The NFL announces that it will suspend Jones for the entire 2007 season, the harshest non-drug-related penalty doled out in 44 years.

June 18, 2007: Sought for questioning after a shooting at an Atlanta strip club allegedly involving members of his entourage. Police say Jones wasn’t present and he wasn’t charged.

May 7, 2007: Pulled over from driving his 2004 Cadillac XLT 79 mph in a 55 mph zone.

Jan. 15, 2008: Accused of hitting a woman at an Atlanta strip club, though the accuser later withdrew he complaint.

  1. My girlfriend is a West Virginia alumni. She was there the night Pac Man hit a kid in the face with a pool stick. She said that the kid apologized for bumping into him but Pac Man turned around and hit him in the face with the pool stick. He and his friends continued to hit him while he was on the ground.

This guy isn't a football player. He is 100% trouble. If he ends up in Boston and starts his BS in Boston, Boston Police will find his bondy in a dumpster.

He doesn't deserve to wear a Patriot uniform.

  1. i think that a team like the patriots is a good place for pac man in the sense that the locker room is run by veterans and if he were to step out of line, one word to bb and his ass is gone. but what bothers me about pac man is if law and order commish goddell says stay away from strip clubs then why couldn't he stay away if he really wants to continue his nfl career? pac man is a huge risk but everyone wants to go back to the superbowl without playing a game. lets enjoy the process of the off season

  1. Moss worked out, why not Pacman? If he would be interested, and TN acceptably compensated, give the guy a conditional contract. If he's serious about continuing his NFL career he must know NE offers that hope. If he is not, cut him.

  1. relax Pats fans - Patriots have no interest in this common criminal...it's just a bunch of hoopla, created by his agent & the media - to try and raise his stock value.

won't matter anyway, if a gang of thuds kills him like they did to Sean Taylor - what comes around, goes around...careful who you choose to hang-out with, PACMAN.............

What a disgrace this guy is, he hasn't changed his ways or learned anything and never will. Hes a punk. That Las Vegas incident makes me sick, this guy should not be allowed in this league. 1. This is where the line should be drawn. I've always believed that Corey Dillon and Randy Moss were dedicated athletes who--however questionable their behavior in expressing it--were frustrated at being stuck in organizations that were not commited to winning; organizations they were unable to respect. All that changed when they arrived in NE and entered a system that was bound and determined to achieve the excellence they had always wanted to be a part of, and they flourished as a result. I don't see this as a "rehabilitation", rather as an example of how brilliance chafes when restricted, then comes into its own when properly directed and given a vehicle for its expression. There was nothing criminally "wrong" with Corey and Randy.

PacMan is a different story. I think his behavior points to problems that go way beyond being frustrated as an athlete and not winning football games, and I don't think switching teams (even if it means going to New England) will change that, much as I'd like to believe it would. The Pats would be taking an uncharacteristic risk in bringing him aboard and should be seeing red flags. There is other talent out there, and let's not get too far away from what has made them winners in the past: The ability to evaluate talent and character in the draft as well as in "lower-profile" free agency, and to develop that talent to thrive in their system.

  1. Not worth it. I agree totally with the poster who said we've had enough. Spygate and blowing the SB were enough for one year. Moss was one thing. Dillon and some other "bruised" players are another. But this punk is a whole new level of garbage. I live in LV and that bouncer still shows up in the news. As long as he can't walk, that piece of human garbage shouldn't be able to play in the NFL at all. Definitely not with the Pats. BK, SP, and BB listen up - if this isn't just a dummy rumor, it's not acceptable to fans with minimum standards of fair play. And I'm betting there's a lot more of us than those who just want to win.

  1. Last I checked the Patriots just lost a star cornerback. The last I checked Pacman Jones will not be commanding top money from any team in salary.

The Patriots will sign him to an incentive contract for 1 year. His agent will tell him tostay 100% quiet for one year and then he will be a free agent once again and more teams will be willing to give him a chance with millions more.

Of course, if he does behave, his contract will be very clear he is outa here!

With all the bullcrap going on because we have a young commish who has no clue on handling league matters in the NFL , with videogate...the Pats could use a slightly different press distraction :)))

Sign him and then if you need to cut him. But have a decent replacement waiting in the wings.

  1. I think that the Patriots should sign Pacman he is a great cornerback, and with the people we have lost he would bring great talent to our db's. Despite what most of you say Pacman is one of the best corners in the game today, who cares about his attitude, if hes winning he is less likely to go out and do the stupid things he did in tennessee.
