Patriots to host Seward

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff March 5, 2008 05:58 PM

After delving into the unrestricted free agent market in recent days, the Patriots are now considering a move with a restricted free agent. Team officials are scheduled to host Carolina linebacker Adam Seward on a visit at Gillette Stadium on Thursday.

Seward (31 games, 2 starts) has primarily been a backup over the last three seasons for the Panthers, who run a 4-3 defense. In New England’s 3-4 scheme, the 6-foot-2, 248-pound Seward would project to play inside linebacker.

As a restricted free agent, Seward was tendered at the low level by the Panthers. That means that if the Patriots sign him to an offer sheet – and the Panthers don’t match – it would cost New England a fifth-round draft choice, the round in which Seward entered the NFL in 2005.

The Patriots’ interest in Seward likely has some ties to his college career at UNLV, when he played inside linebacker in a 3-4 defense. That position, which requires bigger, physical linebackers who can take on guards but still run effectively, has been a challenge for the Patriots to find young talent.

Seward also might have caught the Patriots’ eye in the 2007 preseason. In the Patriots’ 24-7 victory over the Panthers on Aug. 24, Seward had five tackles. He is also considered a strong special teams player.

  1. There is no good ILBs in upcoming draft, so Seward definitely worth the 5th rounder.

  1. as crazy as it sounds, we could always move Vrabel back inside if we draft somebody like Gholston, who would be a nice OLB

  1. Seward's worth a pick as long as he turns in to a productive player. We don't need to relive the Monty Beisel era.

  1. Mike,
You called this one very early in your FA preview. It would be a solid move for a player who is currently playing in the wrong scheme in Carolina. Seward is athletic, fast, rangy, smart, instinctive and a solid tackler whose motor is always going. He takes on G's well and is tough. He has good range and doesn't get caught up in trash. He is a good blitzer as well. He strenghts are the Pats weaknesses at ILB and he seems like a 3-4 ILB all the way. Only having to give up a 5th Rd pick is a bonus as well, at worst he will be a solid ST performer, which is what you expect out of 1st yr 5th Rd picks anyway.

  1. If they decide to offer him a contract, do they go the poison pill route or a trade and sign, like the Welker deal last year? Should be interesting to see how it plays out.

  1. We drafted his UNLV teammate Ryan Claridge OLB in the same year 2005.

  1. If the Patriots are going to delve into the restricted free agent market for linebackers, why not Michael Boley of Atlanta? Great player.

  1. It will be good to bring this guy into camp. Hopefully Seau returns for a 19th season....
I wonder if the Patriots sign/trade-for Seward, where does that leave T.J. Slaughter, Larry Izzo and Eric Alexander? If Seau returns there is likely only space on the roster for two backup ILB. Which two? If Seau doesn't return, do the Patriots trust any of these guys to start, or Woods to start at OLB (moving Vrabel or Thomas inside)? Does this mean the Patriots won't draft an ILB high in the draft?
It'll be interesting to see what the Patriots do, but with Thomas and Vrabel able to play inside, I'd like to see them target in the draft an OLB.

  1. I like it. This guy could turn into the next Mike Vrabel the way he went from being a nobody in Pittsburgh to a productive player in the Pats system.

  1. I'd go the poison pill route if they sign him. Make the contract guaranteed fully if he plays x number of games in the state of North Carolina.

  1. Seward all the way... great talent needs a team where he can show it. I'm excited to see what the Patriots do with him.

  1. Adam Seward is indeed an intriguing choice! Ironically, PFW was quite high on him the year he entered the draft. Eric Alexander may be a special team asset, but... in the last analysis his body of work at ILB is unremarkable at best. But then again I had David Harris at #24 in the previous draft and (don't laugh) Brian Leonard at #28! HMMMMM... just maybe it might have gotten us to the "Promised Land."

  1. I think Pierre Woods will be given a chance to earn a starting job. From all accounts it sounds like the coaching staff thinks more highly of him than Alexander.

  1. Thomas belogs outside with Vrable - he's clearly more productive there.

With Bruschi back as a mentor (as well as part-timer) in the middle, it seems there'd be an opportunity to "struggle" with any/all of the remaining choices.

Seau returning could also be a good thing, as he & Bruschi could share the same spot, thus giving them each only half the normal work load - while still always having one or the other on the field to help the new guys keep thier focus.

Are there been any other FA ILB's expressing interest in being traded or released?

The way recievers, etc. appear to be willing to play for Patriots for less, with the chance of winning - I'd think it would basically hold true for any position....

Thomas - new-blood - Bruschi/Seau - Vrable sounds pretty solid to me in the 3-4.

After leading the team in tackles last season, I'm not buying into bruschi being too old - as many are saying & Seau showed he's still got gas in his tank too.

I see them rotating with each other as a key way to keep them both fresh & very productive.

P.S. - thank you Randy - for staying true to your word & playing for less than obtainable - in exchange for the opportunity to play in a winning atmosphere. Others could learn from your SMART decision, if they decide to look at the big picture.

I see Samuel going down the slide to mediocrity, just like the many others who left an organization, which made them appear better than they were.

Of course, your gift of talent is far above what any of thiers was - anyway!
    I smell a Ring for you in the near future...maybe 2...or 3...
