Patriots visit with Bryant

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff March 20, 2008 10:54 AM

Free-agent cornerback Fernando Bryant is visiting with Patriots officials and is likely to sign a contract with the team.

Bryant’s visit was initially reported by the web site profootballtalk.com on Wednesday evening.

Bryant’s expected signing appears to be linked to new Patriots special assistant/secondary coach Dom Capers. Bryant played under Capers for two seasons with the Jaguars in 1999-2000, when Capers was Jacksonville’s defensive coordinator.

In his time with the Jaguars (1999-2003) and Lions (2004-2007), the 5-foot-11, 184-pound Bryant has played in 110 career regular-season games, with 109 starts.

  1. Who's the favorite to land the left CB position? It looks like it's between Hobbs and Bryant, with maybe Webster in the mix too.

  1. If Fernando Bryant signs, there is no way they take a corner @ the 7th slot. No way. Maybe they trade down and take a corner but no way they take one @ 7. This looks to me like a team that is setting itself to trade down.

  1. I agree Sean...ESPN's John Clayon just reported he signed a one-year deal. With the Pats signing three corners, I highly doubt a corner will be taken at #7. I really hope they trade down with the Cowboys and get two picks in the 20s...pick up a LB and either CB/S/OL

Also, this makes me wonder if Ty Law is seriously being considered by Pats

  1. i am expecting 2 scenarios:
    1. draft Vernon if he fall into lap.
    2. if mcfadden falls trade down with cowboys for 2 1st rounders to get LB/CB, bot should be top 1-2 talents

  1. I just noticed this on allthingsbillbelichick:

"Belichick Headlines 2008 Alabama Coaching Clinic
"Alabama's 2008 Coaching Clinic will feature some of the best to ever teach the game of football. Bill Belichick, Vince Dooley, Al Groh and Dean Pees are scheduled to speak in Tuscaloosa this year. Former Alabama standout and current Detroit Lions cornerback Fernando Bryant will also be on hand to address the coaches in attendance....."
