Poteat a possibility

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff March 6, 2008 11:18 AM

The Patriots have had dialogue with free-agent cornerback Hank Poteat about the possibility of him signing with the club.

At this point, nothing is imminent and no official visit has been scheduled.

Poteat spent parts of 2004, 2005 and 2006 with the Patriots. He was with the Jets for most of 2006 and all of last season.

The Patriots currently have Ellis Hobbs, Tim Mixon, Mike Richardson, Antwain Spann and Jason Webster under contract at cornerback. Also, 2007 first-round pick Brandon Meriweather is an option at corner, while Chad Scott, who is an unrestricted free agent, is a candidate to return.

  1. I forgot about Mike Richardson, did he show anything before he was hurt? I think he was hurt pretty early on.

  1. that's a lot of corners.. I guess they are trying to get as many CBs as they can and have a free for all for the spots at camp? Well at least there aren't too many good QBs we will be playing so we wont get burned too bad hopefully.

  1. Poteat would be a good addition to the club. He is familiar with the defense, knows the players and coaches, and is not a head case or a screw up. They should make an effort to get him.

  1. This would be a good move if the Patriots have no intention of returning Scott. Otherwise, I don't think he fits on the roster.

  1. Hank Poteat is a poor man's version of my man O T I S Smith, getting better with age. Let's bring him back, good nickel CB who can start when needed. He's strong, especially for his size, he is athletic, has balance and quickness to stick with his man in coverage and he is football savy. He also plays well in zone coverage. A valuable backup and quality ST contributor. He is not a superstar but fills a role and does it well.

  1. Hank is still one of my favorites for the fine job he did in 2004 & 2005, a very sure tackler who more than once made crucial tackles to prevent first downs in close games. Not to forget his tipping the ball away from Hines Ward during the 2004 AFCCG! Break out the Bongos!

Mike - What is the deal with Mixon and Spann? I know Mixon was on the Practice Squad, but I don't recall that he received an ERFA tender, and Spann was re-signed last Fall, was it a two year deal?
