Report: Gaffney back to Pats

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff March 4, 2008 08:13 PM

Adam Schefter of the NFL Network reports tonight that the Patriots and WR Jabar Gaffney have agreed to a one-year, $2 million contract.

Gaffney's reported return ensures that four of the team's top five receivers will be back in 2008, as he joins Randy Moss, Wes Welker and Kelley Washington. Donte' Stallworth is the lone top target to sign elsewhere, as he joined the Browns.

Asked by the New Bedford (Mass.) Standard Times about his contract, Gaffney said: "I'm good. I wanted to get a longer deal, but we couldn't. But we will get it done."

Gaffney totaled 36 receptions for 449 yards and five touchdowns in 2007. He had overtaken Stallworth as the primary No. 3 receiver by the end of last season.

  1. Chad Jackson needs to step up this year. It was reported that Randy Moss took him under his wing last year but if he can step up & realize his potential we'll be better off than last year. Now we need LBs. Takeo Spikes would look good with Teddy & Junior unless the surf's up.

  1. interesting that it's a one year deal...but i'm glad he's back...i've been a fan of gaffney since the 06/07 postseason where he came on strong...i thought he played pretty well this year and was impressed that he took over the no. 3 spot by year's end.

i'm still interested to see how chad jackson is going to be this year...i have high hopes for him.

  1. Moss #1, Gaffney #2, Welker in the slot, Washington or Jackson #4. Sounds pretty good to me. Welcome back!

  1. Awesome deal for the Pats! Gaffney is solid, especially for the price we are paying.

    Next year it's looking like : 1. Moss 2. Welker 3. Gaffney 4. Jackson?

That looks pretty solid to me.

Stallworth gone isn't as big of a deal as everyone is making it out to be considering he lost his job to Jabar half way through the season last year. :)

That being said... We are solid on offense, now we need to make some moves on defense..

  1. That's great news!!! Could it be: 1). Moss, 2).Welker, 3).Gaffney, 4).Washington? Seeing that they picked up S Aiken.

  1. Great news! The offense returns intact, and hopefully will be healthier this year than it was last year. Now it's time to load up on defense.

  1. I think they gave Gaffney a 1 year deal to make sure he can perform well with more playtime since he was sharing with stallworth last season. If he does well I think the Pats should give him a 3 year deal.

  1. Good news I like Gaffney as it's been said already he stepped up big in the post season in 06 and has patiently worked his way up. Also like his toughness on the field isn't afraid to throw in some well timed hard blocks.

  1. Great News! Thank you Gaff for coming back. He needs a longer deal. He was so freakin' critical to keeping the opponents' secondary honest. Great hands and very underrated. Welcome Back!

  1. Great news!!!! Still have question marks between Washington and Jackson. I really think both can contribute but... still need one more veteran wr. to solidify wr. position.

  1. @Rich

I agree, Stallworth isn't that big of a loss as the media think it is, Gaffney proved he had the better hands at the end. While Stallworth is nice for the YAC but is always iffy on the catch.

  1. i'm definitley happy to hear that Jabar returing to NE,he is very good at routes, reads defense well, catches the ball, has good hands, and pretty good size to 6'1" 200lbs. same size as "ochi cinco" but not as cut out. but yeah gaffney is a great fit for brady and will really help us out in the long run,i think he should get a deal for about 4-5 yrs.
