Report: Stallworth to join Browns

Posted by Christopher L. Gasper, Globe Staff March 1, 2008 05:21 PM

The Patriots haven't lost Randy Moss -- yet -- but they have lost the services of another wide receiver.

According to former Globe writer Michael Smith, now of ESPN fame, Stallworth has reached an agreement to sign with the Cleveland Browns. Stallworth became a free agent after the Patriots elected not to pick up the $8 million in option bonus payments he was due this off-season.

In his one and only season in New England, Stallworth, 27, was the Patriots' fourth-leading receiver, catching 46 passes for 697 yards and three touchdowns.

  1. I don't know if anyone is out there, but in the 15min that i've been typing on this blog, Stallworth is becoming a Brown, and Gay is expexted to exchange contracts with the Saints!!!! WHAT IN THE WORLD IS HAPPENING TO OUR TEAM? WHEN WILL THIS MADNESS STOP?

  1. If we sign Gaffney, not a big hit to the offense. Most expected a 1-and-done with Stallworth anyhow

  1. I'm going to Vegas in two weeks and I'm picking two teams out of a hat, one NFC and one AFC, and putting $100 on each to win the Super Bowl. I will not put the PATs in my hat.

  1. With Stallworth leaving, Pats must resign Moss and Gaffney for sure. Hopefully Chad Jackson will emerge next year. Too bad we lost Bam last month.

  1. keep in mind that this "star studded" wide receiver core with moss and stallworth and welker didn't win us a super bowl. troy brown, david patten and and co. did.

  1. Fear not little buckaroos. All's well in Patriot land. In Bill we trust. When the dust and the draft settle, we'll still be the team to beat in the AFC, along with the Colts, Steelers, and Chargers.

  1. People need to relax. When will you realize that Donte Stallworth slipped to #4 on the depth chart last year? He barely had an impact. Now you folks are getting mad because he signed elsewhere?

Look at the contract the Browns just gave him: 7 years, $35 million with $10 million guaranteed and $17 million over the first 4 years.

That is an insane ammount of money for a role player.

Do you really expect the Patriots to pay that type of money? How would they pay Moss and others then? Do you folks realize there is a salary cap and only so much money you can give to a player?

You have to stop looking at this offseason as only affecting next year. If we signed all these free agents, then we will have no money free in the future to resign guys like Vince Wilfork, Logan Mankins and James Sanders. Those are the type of players you commit big money to.

  1. I cant believe the Patriots are letting go of all these players. I find it a shameand if Moss goes too who knows what kind of year they are going to have. Even though I think that pro sports players are way overpaid the Patriots need to learn to cough up the money like other teams do and hold on to the good players. They have lost Samuel and Kevin Brady and now Stallworth and possibly Gay......wake up BB and Mr. Kraft!

  1. They went for it all last year but came up (a little ) short. Now it's time to pay the piper. The Pats can't afford the silly money some of these guys are getting (with the cap) so you have to let them go. This would hurt much less if they fully executed their plan to win it all in 07.

  1. People of Boston

Please accept our deepest sympathy. Your loss must be overwhelming. Our prayers are with you as you march through this wholesome struggle. Please let us know if there is anything we can do to help ease the pain of your Moss...(we mean loss).

    Sincerely
    The Mara Family and
    The Steinbrenners

  1. Stop whining people name me any team that has won these many games in the last 7 years. BB knows what he is paying for , other teams don't have a clue, still playing catchup.

  1. I guess I must have been blinded by all the wins like everyone else, but I'm starting to get fed up with the arrogance and secrecy of this team. They're like the Bush administration, Roger Clemens and the Yankees all rolled into one. I'll burn all my Pats gear before I get looked upon like a Yankees fan.

  1. Have the Patriots lost their minds. If the Patriots couldn't afford to re-sign Randy Moss they should have put the franchise tag on him. That way they could of traded him for at least a first round draft pick. Now, they will get nothing in return for losing this years top free agent receiver. Not smart, not smart at all.

  1. I think it's funny how you people turn on your players when they leave. Once they leave boston all of a sudden they weren't that good or they weren't that importand or you never really needed em anyway. Keep trying to convince yourselves......

  1. Guys The Patriots didnt win the super bowl this year with a star-studded receiver core.....Did You Forget?...They'll be Fine if they sign Moss and keep Gaffney...N Randall Gay He's A role player they will find someone to replace him...CALM DOWN

  1. Hey patriot fans....get ready to meet the new Browns.

Romeo is bringing them to a stadium near you.

  1. I think it's humorous how you "fans" turn on your players when they leave. As soon as they decide to leave the Pats they were either overrated, loved money not the pats, or were never really that good to begin with. But if they would've stayed you would all be talking about how your "dynasty" was intact due to their presence. You need to ask yourselves why the exodus of players...perhaps they're as sick of you all as the rest of us are.

  1. Some of the comments here smell of band wagoner's who don't understand the huge piece of the game that is The Business side. We can't keep everyone and neither can Dallas or New York or Indy or any other contender for that matter. Paoili and Bellichick will put the best package on the field they can with the money they have to spend. Last year was a freak as we had Randy Moss for half of what he was worth. Players come in, they perform and their value goes up. Relax and let this play out and one other thing Get off Moss's back. These negative comments about him are unjustified. He gave 100% last year to the team and took small money for it. He wants to get paid what he's worth as anybody would and that's fair.
