Surgery for Watson

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff March 27, 2008 10:54 PM

Patriots tight end Benjamin Watson had surgery on his left ankle earlier this month, according to a league source. Watson had injured the ankle in a Week 6 game at Dallas when safety Roy Williams tackled him from behind.

While Watson missed the ensuing two games, he returned to play in the Patriots' next five contests. Watson was hurt again Dec. 9 against the Steelers, and missed games against the Jets (Dec. 16) and Dolphins (Dec. 23) before suiting up in the season finale.

In all, Watson played in 12 regular-season games (9 starts), finishing with 36 receptions for 389 yards and six touchdowns. He also suited up for all three postseason contests.

The next question will be how the surgery affects Watson's level of participation in the team's offseason program, which includes passing camps and the lone full-team minicamp (June 6-8). The Patriots are scheduled to open training camp in late July (the exact date has not been announced).

  1. Sure, football's a rough game and we expect people to get hurt, but how many more players does Williams have to injure before the league does something more to the guy than just suspend/fine him? I mean, he gets a one-game suspension after his third horse-collar tackle in one season? How lame is that punishment? And Jerry Jones is no help because he tried to get the suspension lifted! I say suspend RW without pay for at least three games with no appeal for his next offense, and progressively increase it from there.

  1. Yeah that's a good idea. Cut your #1 draft pick and one of the most athletic tight ends in the league who is still on his rookie deal. You'd make a great GM, have you thought about trying your hand at NFL management?

What I'd like to see is Roy Williams get suspended indefinitely next time he rides a guy's ankles out of bounds like he did when injuriing Watson. He's done the same thing to several other players too (including T.O.) and I'm shocked the league doesn't do more about it.

  1. Don't even respond to Mike J, probably a Jets fan looking to bolster his team with ANOTHER Patriot.

Ben has good hands, speed to burn (remember him chasing Bailey 99 yards across the field?) and can only get better.

    He's going no where ...

  1. Why'd they wait until now to have the surgery? Why wouldn't they have done it shortly after the Super Bowl in order to give him more time to heal?

  1. Why is he tromping off to Israel with Kraft if he needed surgery?? Tells me about his priorities -- and getting ready to play football is low on the list!! Trade him if possible to get some value!!
