Ty Law talks Pats, Jets

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff March 12, 2008 04:18 PM

Free-agent cornerback Ty Law said today that he’s been in contact with the Patriots, but at this point the Jets have shown more aggressive interest in him. Law visited with the Jets today.

Asked about his prior contact with the Patriots, Law said he had a “good conversation” with coach Bill Belichick.

“I’d say we’re definitely on good terms. He did express his interest in me coming there and I expressed mine, but I don’t know if it’s something that can get handled soon enough,” Law said.

Law noted that the conversation did not result in an agreement.

Meanwhile, Law touched on his visit to the Jets today, saying: “I’m familiar up here with New York and Eric [Mangini] and this system. They’re been aggressive and enthusiastic about getting something done.”

  1. This is a message to BB and SP that they need to move more quickly if they really want to sign him. Remember Ty needs to feed his family.

  1. Please someone point out to Ty Law, that had he signed with the Patriots for a little less money, but still a lot by anyones standards, instead of going with the Chiefs, he may have made the differance in the play-off game with the Colts and the Super Bowl against the Giants; and he would possibly be looking at 2 more Super Bowl rings and a lock in the Football Hall of Fame.

Ty get your ego in check, you sign with the Jets and you go nowhere; it's time to come home where you belong, where the fans love you and solidify your legacy and possibly have a chance for one or two more Super Bowl rings!

  1. Bill saw how much he has fallen in love with Dunkin Donuts and isn't in a rush to do that deal. Instead, he has the Jets bidding against themselves for Laws services.

  1. Ty would be a great fit & quick fix to replace Samuel - even if it's only temporary.

He already knows the system & proved previously he's capable of contributing as expected. I can't say for certain, but believe he left on at least "decent" terms with the Organization & any players remaining from his previous seasons. (Otherwise, I don't even see why BB & Co. would be willing to consider him at all)

A 1 year deal including a fair wage & some incentive "extras" could be great for all involved, as well as providing his services as a mentor to some younger talent that could be groomed for future production.

Plus the fact that he probably knows Patriots have a very good chance of going to the Superbowl again nexy year, has to be additional incentive for him.

Welcome him back with open arms, I say!

  1. ...In other words, "The Jets have offered more money as of now."
It is nice to see that losing (everywhere since he left New England) hasn't changed Ty Law, he will always be about the money

  1. Word is Ty is bigger around the gut than Wilfork these days; unless he's coming back as a lineman, we should stay away from him.

  1. If he is after top dollar, he will be wearing a Jets uniform. They are spending money like drunken sailors. If Law is not a Patriot, use the #7 pick on the best corner available.

  1. The Pats don't need this egotistical selfish cry baby. He's all about the money and his $ value is going down each day. He doesn't care about winning -- just about how much money he is paid. This is not the type of character the Patriots need.

  1. I have to agree that Law's motivation at this point is money and that's not a bad thing. It just won't make him a Patriot. He WAS a great Patriot and Patriots fans have great memories. There's just not a need to talk about the player in the present tense anymore. As for Mangini and Tannenbaum, they seem pretty desperate these days and probably fear for their jobs. I think we'd all love to see those two go down.

  1. Sign Law!
Manning still wakes up in cold sweats dreaming about his picks.
I know he only has a year or two left, but we can use that time to bring along some younger guys.
    Manning-Law, bring it on!

  1. I would have no problem having Law back with the Pats, but he will only be back if he is willing to play for little money. My guess is the Pats made an offer to him (a low offer) and the ball is now in his court. He could get more money with the Jets, but better oppty with Pats.

  1. It would be nice to have Ty Law back at a reasonable salary. I wouldn't stretch the cap skew the payroll for a 33 year old CB that has lost a step. If it's every last cent that law wants, please sign with the Jets, they're going to wini 5-6 games next year, enjoy your season iin loserville!

  1. Ty has seen better days. The Pats would be better off drafting a relatively unknown cornerback from Hull University, Jimmy Cook. This guy has more moves than John Travolta.

  1. A has been is not the way to rebuild a secondary. This defense needs to get younger. I like the idea of the Jets and ManQueeny getting Law instead. Randy Moss in a one on one with Law? Touchdown!

  1. Ty Law was great when he played for us. So was Milloy, Mcginest, Vinatieri,Woody, Bledsoe and some others.BB is just raising the price for his services to the Jets.Let him Go the guy runs a 4.8 forty yd dash now.

  1. Ty may not be where he was 4 yrs ago, but with the Pats club, would do well. This is the quintessential team. Go one yr with incentives, if SB victory, sign for two more yrs. He is 33, so could last another four yrs. We need him after losing Samuel and Gay. In any event, keep him away from that scumbag hypocrit Mangini.

  1. drive up the price so the Jets make another stupid free agency move. Other than that, Ty needs to break a sweat once and awhile

  1. jets are targeting any position of interest to the Patriots. This is not the Sox Yankees rivalry since the jets are in no way a competitive team (or will be anytime soon). Let them waste their money making moves trying to take away from the patriots instead of focusing on their own true needs

  1. I don't understand the comment about rebuilding the secondary. The Pats are looking for a 2nd starting CB. They went with "has beens" in the '01 and '03 seasons too (O-T-I-S and Poole), and both of them had stellar seasons.
