Webster deal official

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff March 4, 2008 05:08 PM

The Patriots officially announced the signing of cornerback Jason Webster today.

"Jason is an experienced veteran who will add good depth to our secondary,” Patriots coach Bill Belichick said in a statement.

A bit more from the press release:

Webster, 30, is a veteran of eight NFL seasons with the San Francisco 49ers (2000-03), Atlanta Falcons (2004-06) and Buffalo Bills (2007). The 5-foot-9-inch, 187-pound cornerback has played in 87 career games with 74 starts and has recorded 393 tackles (324 solo), 11 interceptions for 228 yards and two touchdowns, 56 passes defensed, six forced fumbles and one fumble recovery. He has also played in three career playoff games with two starts for San Francisco (2001) and Atlanta (2004).

  1. Jason Webster is not the answer for the Pats. They need a big time CB like Lito Shepherd. Losing Samuel will not be ann easy hole to fix.

  1. This is a Randall Gay replacement not a Samuel replacement.

  1. I would say that the team views Webster as more of a replacement for Gay than for Samuel. Webster should be a decent nickel back. I would be surprised if the team goes after Shepard seeing as how this draft is said to be a good one for defensive backs.

  1. Webster might not be Samuel but how much different is he from Gay. I bet Bill has another move or two planned that will help explain this move.

  1. Jason Webster replaces Randall Gay at a fraction of the cost. He isn't replacing Samuel. There is still plenty of time to do that.

  1. Who said he is replacing Samuel? You need to learn patience.

  1. This is a depth move, it's March 4th for crying out loud and people need to settle down. You don't build a team with all high priced FA's, Webster can potentially fill an important role and replace Gay. Webster is experienced and versatile. He gives very good effort and plays bigger than his size. He is athletic, has a smooth back pedal and transitions well in coverage. He is more natural from a press position than off position, which is the new style Capers will focus on. He has good ball skills and the ability to make big plays and break up passes. Remember Randall Gay was injured the previous two years before this last one and Webster is a much cheaper version which will allow for addition of more players on D.

  1. I don't think Webster is the answer...to losing Samuel. I see him more as a replacement for Gay. I could see Webster and Chad Scott (if he returns) fighting for the #3 and #4 corner positions. I believe the Patriots are going to bring in a corner through a trade, free agency or the draft to replace Samuel.

  1. I think Webster is just for depth, I really don't think NE plans to move him to a starter spot seeing the way how we torched the bills in pretty much every way possible in the secondary last season.

Bring back Ty Law and get a good draft pick, there's the solution for the CB situation. I'm an old Ty Law fan and he truely was a shutdown corner with the way he handled Peyton Manning and other QBs. You can pretty much cross the receiver out if they were matched up against Law.
