Wilson set to visit Bucs

Posted by Christopher L. Gasper, Globe Staff March 2, 2008 04:48 PM

This tidbit passed along from colleague Mike Reiss:

Safety Eugene Wilson will make his first free agent visit tonight when he is hosted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Wilson is also scheduled to visit the Pittsburgh Steelers on Monday and the Jets on Tuesday. The Tennessee Titans are also in the process of attempting to arrange a visit with Wilson.

Entering free agency, the expectation was that Wilson, a five-year veteran, would not be returning to the Patriots. Wilson was a starter at safety on two Patriots' Super Bowl titles teams his first two seasons in the league after making the switch over from corner during his rookie season, 2003. But a combination of nagging injuries and declining play led him to fall out of favor, losing his starting role to James Sanders during the 2007 season.

Wilson played in 11 games and made six starts for the Patriots last season. He made 32 tackles and had an interception, which he returned for a touchdown, against the Jets in a 20-10 win on Dec. 16.

  1. Very suprising that the Pats who are suddenly lacking depth, would not consider bringing Wilson back. He can play both safety and coner. Has his play dropped off that much? Yes, he needs to stay healthy, but I think he can help.

  1. Frankly ron, I have the impression there is mutual dislike and distrust between Geno and the Pats staff. I also think Geno probably needs a different strength and conditioning program than that used here. A change of scenery, better relations with the coaching staff, and a strength and conditioning program that keep him injury-free may do wonders for Geno.

  1. As a Titans fan, I hope that we are able to sign Eugene Wilson. The Titans need all the help they can get. It was tough getting to ten wins last season. The addition of Alge Crumpler was a damn good pickup for the offense. I think that the addition of Wilson would make a great defense even greater. Sure, his health was a concern in the past. However, I'm optimistic that if Wilson stays healthy, he will see plenty of playing time in Nashville. I also think he could get along with the Titans staff.
