59 for Hobson

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff April 14, 2008 11:32 AM

New Patriots LB Victor Hobson has been issued jersey No. 59.

Hobson donned 54 when he played for the Jets, but that number isn't available in New England (LB Tedy Bruschi).

The last Patriots player to wear 59 was Rosevelt Colvin (2003-2007).

  1. This made me think of something more important. If Troy Brown doesn't come back (I'm still holding out hope he does). How long will the Patriots wait to retire his number?

  1. The rumor circulating around the net right now is that Colvin ruptured the Achilles tendon.

If so then he's looking at another year of recovery and then what are his chances as a speed rushing OLB with a bad wheel who cannot handle the edge?

  1. Matt, the Pats have already told Troy Brown that he is not in their future plans. Now he has to decide if he wants to go somewhere else. I'm not sure how many numbers the Pats can afford to retire, they were too liberal with this honor in the past.

  1. Rob, The Achilles rumor makes sense, the Pats put Colvin on IR about and hour after the game, and you're right, I have never seen an athlete come all the way back from an achilles deal, never mind a 30-something LB with a bad hip to boot.
