Another crack at No. 7

Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com has posted his fourth installment of a mock draft that includes the first 10 picks of the round. He's been calling writers from each city in recent weeks to get their picks.

This scenario stumped me a bit:

  • 1) Dolphins -- OT Jake Long (Michigan)
  • 2) Rams -- DL Glenn Dorsey (LSU)
  • 3) Falcons -- QB Matt Ryan (Boston College)
  • 4) Raiders -- RB Darren McFadden (Arkansas)
  • 5) Chiefs -- OL Ryan Clady (Boise State)
  • 6) Jets -- DE Chris Long (Virginia)

The names I was considering at No. 7 were DE/OLB Vernon Gholston (Ohio State), DE Sedrick Ellis (USC), OG Branden Albert (Virginia) and LB Keith Rivers (USC).

I was torn between a more pressing need (linebacker), what appears to be great value (defensive line), and what might be the safest choice of all (offensive guard).

In the end, I went with Gholston.

    1. Mike,

I see you're back on the Gholston bandwagon. You picked him on NFL Network in the past week and again in this draft. Mike, there is no way on Earth that the Patriots select Gholston at the 7 spot. They don't gamble in the first round and Gholston is a gamble. Remember that Derrick Harvey was the beast in the BCS game, not Gholston. Having seen those two guys, Harvey is the more consistent player. One thing I know, the Patriots love consistency.

    1. Surely there's no way that Howie's son will fall as far as #6? And if he does, I imagine there would be several teams willing to trade up for him. In a draft where it is hard to pick the order of the top 10, I believe that Chris Long is the safest bet. If he doesn't go at #1, I'm sure he'll still be off the board in the top 5.

Agree with you though that if it gets to 7 with those names off the board already, we'd be most likely to go Gholston.

    1. I am all for Gholston becoming a Patriot...then again I am a biased buckeye who thinks buckeyes can do no wrong!

    1. The trouble with all these mock drafts is that no trading up or down is allowed, which kind of makes them poor predictors of what will really happen at the weekend.
Im not sure Gholston will live up to the hype.....but wouldn't say no!

    1. Gholston or Ellis would be a good choice for the Pats here, however I think their best choice in this scenario would be LB Keith Rivers. The Patriots do not 'need' a DE, they 'need' a linebacker and considering Gholston consistent inconsistency on the field the better pick with be a very smart & consistent USC LB that can play inside as well as out.

    1. I really like Albert and I hope the Pats can get him to help protect Brady.
Imagine what a potentially good O line the Jets could have if they take Albert..?
If the Pats played a 4-3 I would go with Ellis.

    1. I'm with Sean....I would rather see the Pats take Harvey over Gholston. Harvey is much more consistent and will have an easier time converting to OLB as he has already played that position a little in college.
