Belichick on Hobson
The Patriots have confirmed the signing of LB Victor Hobson today, a deal that is for one year. In the press release announcing the move, coach Bill Belichick said:
"Victor is a good young player with considerable playing experience. We are excited about his addition to our linebacker unit."

"We are excited about his addition to our linebacker unit"
I doubt BB writes his own press releases, he most likely just OK's them but the guy/girl who does ends ever player signing with that line. If BB signed up for a Capital One card the press release would read.
".....I am excited about this addition to my wallet"
I am excited about this edition to the blog.
This is a Bill Belichick type of player, it will be a good to have some youth in the linebacker corp.
So BB players are slow and can't shed blocks?
Glenn G,
Where do you get that Hobson is slow and can't shed blocks? I followed him since his college days and wouldn't never describe him like that at all. Just in case you don't want to take my word for it, here is some scouting info on Hobson from Scouts, Inc.
From scouts, http://insider.espn.go.com/nfl/players:
Victor Hobson, Height: 6-0 Weight: 252 lbs.
Age: 28 Pos: LB, Experience: 5 years
College: Michigan, Drafted: Year:2003 Round:2 Pick:21, Jets
Hobson is a short, stocky built player with good strength and above-average athletic ability. He does a nice job maintaining leverage versus tight ends and separating to the ball. He uses his hands well to maintain position on the edge effectively. He can fold and pursue down the line of scrimmage on plays away or close in space showing short area quickness. He is a powerful tackler with great explosion and hip roll on contact. Hobson has quickness and speed rushing the passer and marked up six sacks with great effort and technique. He is a solid short-zone coverage player as he reads routes well and understands leverage. He can get exposed in man coverage as he does not have great speed and burst off the line of scrimmage. He is best playing on the edge of blockers and rushing the passer as opposed to taking on lineman or playing pass coverage. Hobson plays with a great motor, instincts and toughness which resulted in his best season as a pro. Hobson has played well in the new 3-4 defensive scheme that Eric Mangini has brought to the Jets and should continue to be productive in the coming years.
Nikos ,
Ive watched Hobson since he came on board to the Jets and he pretty much sucked all year, every year... he is more of a 4-3 than a 3-4 linebacker. Pats signed him just to piss off the jets.
What'll really piss off the JESTS is when Hobson plays far better for the Patriots than he ever did for the JESTS.
I like this signing.
He's more of a 4-3 LB than a 3-4 LB??
Hobson was a man without a home under Herm. He didn't have the speed and coverage skills required of a 4-3 OLB. He didn't actually begin to be productive until Mangini came to town. I think he could be productive as a weak side ILB too, although Mangini didn't use him in that capacity. It'll be interesting to see how the Pats use him. I don't think he'll be replacing AD in the middle. I think AD will again return to ILB this year and that they're looking for someone to take over for Colvin.
Nothing to lose since the pats are paying him the veteran minimum
