Defensive headsets pass

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff April 1, 2008 12:03 PM

The NFL just announced that the rule proposal to allow a defensive player to wear a communication device in his helmet has been passed by owners.

The vote was 25-7. A total of 24 votes were needed to pass the proposal.

The Patriots were one club that helped sway the vote. The team voted against a similar proposal last year, but voted for it this year.

The proposal last year garnered 22 votes.

  1. Hey not questioning you Mike, but why hasnt this popped up on ESPN or any of the major sports news outlets yet? I keep waiting for a story to pop up online but haven't seen one yet.

And are there any details as to how many defensive players will be allowed to be equipped with this technology?

  1. Mike, how many defensive players will get the headset? On the offensive side all the QB's have them, but they usually aren't on the field at the same time. Will they allow multiple defensive players on the field with headsets?

  1. Tiffany,
This has passed, multiple news sites are reporting eventhough there is no need to question Mike since he is there at the owner's meeting and works hard to break stories first. Two defensive players will be allowed to wear the communication device but only one will be allowed to be on the field.

  1. I agree. Don't bother checking espn unless you want second rate news from a second rate source and meaningless, unimformed banter.

For news on the pats check with Mike
