Kaczur a first-rounder?

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff April 10, 2008 01:01 PM

Scouts Inc., offers up a re-grading of the 2005 NFL Draft today on ESPN.com, and then takes it one step further and provides a re-draft.

Two areas that caught the eye:

  • 1) The Patriots' grade went from a B-minus three years ago to a B-plus today.

  • 2) In the re-draft, offensive tackle Nick Kaczur was given a first-round grade, and Logan Mankins jumped from the 32nd overall pick to the 7th.

    Patriots 2005 draft

  • First round (32nd overall) -- OL Logan Mankins
  • Second round -- no pick (traded)
  • Third round (84th overall) -- CB Ellis Hobbs
  • Third round (100th overall) -- OL Nick Kaczur
  • Fourth round (133rd overall) -- S James Sanders
  • Fifth round (170th overall) -- LB Ryan Claridge
  • Sixth round -- no pick (traded)
  • Seventh round (230th overall) -- QB Matt Cassel
  • Seventh round (255th overall) -- TE Andy Stokes

    1. Pretty good draft.

It is kind of amazing the Pats have 5 people on the Roster remaining from the 2005 draft. I think they have 1 remaining from last years draft.

    1. No kidding.....Nick Kaczur? The guy who couldn't stop Strahan in the SB? And the guy who couldn't stop Robert Mathias in week 9 against the Colts? and he also gave up a strip sack against the Redskins, couldn't stop anything from the Ravens, and cause a blind side hit on Brady against the Eagles.

    1. Jet fan in Miami........If not Mcfadden or Gholston, trade down to late first, pick up a late 2 or early 3. Hate to lose Hobson, similat to losing Farrior to Steelers a few years ago. I'll take my chances with Clemons and Pennington this year, will pass on QB till 3rd or 4th round.

    1. Not only it is good to have 5 players remaining, but anything you can get 4 starters with your first 4 picks, it's a good draft. I thought most of these players were underrated coming out, and I'm happy they've worked out for the large part.

On Kaczur though, I think he'll be better suited at RG. I'm really hoping for Branden Albert at #7 if Gholston is gone so we can slide Kaczur inside and play Albert at RT (which he's certainly capable of). LB and CB can be found later, although they should be addressed immediately after.

    1. That article shows how hard it is to find tackles capable of starting in the NFL and how valuble those people are. Winston Justice was a second round pick out of the top program in the nation (USC) and gave up just as much sacks in one game (six) as Kaczur gave up the entire year. Before fans rip our players they should look at the rest of the league.

    1. Tony, they have two from last year's draft, plus Gutierrez (undrafted, but picked up right away). Last year they only had one first day pick. In '05, they had three.

    1. Mankins at #7 really speaks volumes about the Pats draft board. Especially since most folks thought that New England was reaching when they picked him. Including Me and I believe you, Mike
