Meriweather & his hands
Colleague Christopher L. Gasper catches up with 2007 Patriots first-round draft choice Brandon Meriweather for a piece in today's Boston Globe, with Meriweather talking about taking on an expanded role this season.
One nugget of note is that Meriweather, who could not corral a handful of would-be interceptions last season, is taking extra time to work on his hands this offseason. Meriweather had no interceptions in 2007.
"I've been doing a lot of Jugs machines and some catching [drills] with the defensive backs up here, me, James [Sanders], and all of us who work out together do a lot of catching after we run," Meriweather said.
"It's little things. I kind of walk around with a football at night; you might catch me walking around with a football just to keep my hands warmed up to it. I do a lot of little things. I'm trying to go back to the technique days, back when I was little and I had to work on catching."

I see big things ahead for the "Hit Stick" this year. Nice to know that he is working on the weakest part of his game in the offseason.
That's good. Up to this point Meriweather hasn't shown that he even understands the concept of catching. There's no way I'd let him hold my kid.
good to hear he's going to try to step up his game!
Meriweather should try to catch the ball with lots of noise and stuff going around him. He is actually a pretty good receiver from what I've seen in practice and during pre-game, his problem is just that he gets distracted when the ball is coming to him so he should practice with distractions.
he's got the right attitude
He should have some more oppertunities this year, hopefully he'll come down with the ball.
I wanna see him in a starting role. He is my favourite.
Just have Brady throw lasers at his face during training camp, he'll catch on quick in my opinion
That is good to see. The positive is that he was in position to make picks; this is the harder part of making interceptions. Now just hang on to the ball.
BM is going to be a player, fast, versatile, and fearless. If the Pats were to trade down to the bottom of round 1 I would love to see them take Kenny Philips from Miami. He’s another Miami safety and I bet a notch better than Meriweather
He can just watch films of Asante dropping that interception. *bangs head against wall*
The Pats need good things from both Sanders and Meriweather.
I have no doubt that Merriweather will be a major contributor, and possibly at corner ...
If only he made that pick, albeit a tough one, in the Super Bowl.
Sigh.
Meriweather definitely has potential to be a big player for us. If he had caught all those balls thrown his way, he'd have a good number of interceptions. Not bad for his rookie year. Let's hope he keeps on progressing.
Yeah, more power to him.
That pick chance in the SB was a pretty tough one...but oh my, even thinking about it makes me grimace.
The space he gave Smith for the first down on the same drive erked me more, I must say, than that particular drop.
But I like him, and he knows how to hit.
he should use asante samuel's technique, as you all remember asante couldn't catch anything untill the last couple years.
I believe asante said the work on catching nerf balls, It turned Asante to an All-Pro, Brandon should try it too...
btw he needs a nickname....once he starts playing like a stud.
Just have Brady throw bricks at his face during training camp...if you can catch a brick, you can catch a football.
I think what we shoiuld be more keyed in on is that he put himself in place to make picks...meaning he is learning the system and can read routes of receivers...
He has to do it again this year, but this proves he'll be ready when Harrison bids us adeu
