Patriots statement

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff April 23, 2008 04:07 PM

The Patriots released the following statement today:

"The New England Patriots are pleased to learn that Matt Walsh is finally willing to come forward to meet with the NFL. We are eagerly anticipating his honest disclosures to Commissioner Goodell next month and the return of all the materials he took during his time of employment. We fully expect this meeting to conclude the league’s investigation into a damaging and false allegation that was originally levied against the team on the day before this year’s Super Bowl.

It is important to note that there has never been a confidentiality agreement restricting Matt Walsh and no legal protections were ever necessary for him to speak to the NFL, to media outlets or to anyone else regarding his employment with the Patriots. He demanded to be released from responsibility for his statements, and after a frustrating and lengthy negotiation period, a settlement has finally been reached. Walsh has been granted a significant number of privileges through this agreement, none of which the Patriots or the NFL were obligated to give.

At all times, we cooperated fully with the league’s investigation and stand by our initial public statement from Saturday, Feb. 2, 2008: “The suggestion that the New England Patriots recorded the St. Louis Rams’ walkthrough on the day before Super Bowl XXXVI in 2002 is absolutely false.”

The Patriots’ organizational focus at this time is on the NFL Draft and preparing for what we hope will be an exciting 2008 season. We will have no further comments regarding Matt Walsh at this time."

  1. Excellent statement New England, especially the part about a damaging and false allegation about the Patriots taping the Rams walk through.

  1. I work in the print media here in the UK and reading that, I think the Pats may very well sue the Herald over that original story.
That phrase used in the above statement - 'damaging and false allegation' - is key. That sentence may be foreshadowing of a legal case once this Walsh nonsense is cleared up.
If I was the reporter who wrote the original piece, I would be very, very worried.
Incidentally, I'm not making any special pleading for the reporter who wrote the offending piece, but Ive been sued before in the course of my work, and often the reporter is not strictly to blame for what appears in print - its sometimes the higher-ups who demand stories are run - but its not their name in the byline and its not them who cops the flak!

    Interesting statement, all the same.

  1. Well, the statement speaks for itself as did the comments Robert Kraft, Scott Pioli and Bill Belichick. Everyone sounds confident that Walsh is little more than a strange guy making accusations without foundation. Walsh certainly sounds strange, but one must always wonder what some strange little person with a habit of recording conversations without others knowing has hidden.

  1. MIke,

Why is it that this Matt Walsh guy always comes up right before an important date in the Patriots calendar Super Bowl, Owners Meetings, Draft. I find it very strange that this story pops up everytime like someone is pulling the strings. I am defenitaly sick of hearing about and want it to be over with already.

  1. I can't believe the NFL indemnified him and that he can't be sued. There must be some kind of loophole. If this guy gets off scot free for acting like such a loser and actively working to damage the Patriots' chances in the superbowl, I'm gonna find him and slap him around myself. I'm friggin outraged at this guy. If he had anything substantial he would never have demanded so much legal protection.

  1. Mike R: sounds to me by the frimness of the Pats statement and weakness of Walsh's attorney's statement that Walsh wants assurances that he will not be legally bound in any way to the Rams walkthrough claims. I think he hands in 5 tapes of defensive signals (old news) and rides off into the sunset (unfortunately). ...
    Thanks

Why does Walsh even need a Lawyer if he is telling the truth WHICH I doubt the Guy got FIRED over 5 yrs ago for taping the Patriots ILLEGALLY SO If Walsh did this he did it on his own and I cannot believe how STUPID Goodell is to Fall for Walsh's crap Does anyone know why It took Walsh OVER 5 yrs to open his mouth
1 Person can make alot of false tapes by then He had the equipment to do it
Just can't belive they are listening to his CRAP

  1. Solid Gold! I too think someone is pulling the strings here. The timing is too good. 3 days before the draft, the weekend of the Superbowl. Why announce it today, when the meeting isn't until May? Why not wait until after the draft? Now how many times this weekend are we going to hear about Spygate? And what enterprising Herald reporter is going to "break" the pre-story before May, talkng to his unnamed source before the meeting? And even though Walsh STOLE Patriot's property, how long before Spincter gets that property in his hands, makes his own judgement, then parades that property on a 50 state tour for all to see? Never mind no Federal laws were being broken, and videotaping defensive signals has nothing to do with pretending to be a US senator. But hey, I just wrote a large check to the government, so instead of spending it on oil, or giving it to Iraq, lets spend it on investigating NFL video taping practices...

Here's to much ado about nothing finally coming to an end. Lets hope it does not end with Belichick getting suspended, or worse.

  1. I wonder who is paying for Walsh's high priced lawyer since he was let go from his job in Hawaii 3 or 4 months ago. Surely his wife isnt making that kind of money. And this lawyer is from Wash DC, how did Walsh find him? Sounds like one Pennsylvania Senator has his hands deeply into this situation. Maybe this needs to be investigated too!

  1. Notice that Walsh "cannot" speak to anyone about this without first (again) meeting with the NFL for another interview. This is in there to make sure that the media does not hound him when he has nothing to tell him and he'd look like a meatball.

He was spouting off to someone in Hawaii about dirt he has on the Pats. It was right before the Super Bowl so when the Herald (reputible rag that it is..) published these unfounded accusations (without a quote from Walsh, no less), it started to snowball because of the huge media attention on the SB. Then that old fool (with Comcast agendas) Arlen Specter picked up on it and blew it up even further. Walsh wanted it to go away as much as Pats fans by now because he talked himself into a corner and didn't expect the reaction.

The fact that he cannot speak to the media after this is all over is very telling.

  1. Seems like the media is coming around. Peter King was also on Mike & Mike ESPN show this morning and he stated that Walsh has nothing that the commissioner and the league don't already know. King, although I don't agree with him most times, has some very good contacts. I've felt that Walsh has nothing for some time now because if he did we would have seen the evidence by now. This agreement tells me that Walsh went for the homerun and struck out and now he is simply trying to protect his rear.

**WALSH AGREEMENT ADMITS AUDIOTAPING OF PIOLI?**
Posted by Mike Florio on April 23, 2008, 10:31 p.m.

So I’m reading for the twentieth time the agreement signed on Wednesday by the NFL and Matt Walsh, and something hit me.

The agreement specifically provides indemnity for Walsh with respect to “any alleged audiotaping by Walsh of any of his superiors while employed by the Club.” And that’s surely a reference to the contention from Patriots V.P. of player personnel Scott Pioli that Walsh was fired for secretly recording conversations between the two of them.

At the time, Walsh’s lawyer called the allegation a “complete fabrication.” So if it’s a complete fabrication, why would the indemnity agreement specifically include such activities? If it’s a “complete fabrication,” there’s no need to seek indemnity, is there?

  1. What is most surprising about this entire situation is that apparently no independent journalists or investigators are digging deeper and asking the right questions, such as: Who is paying for Walsh's lawyer? Why are these revelations coming out days before every important event for the Patriots (SB, draft - can we say "distraction.") and What exactly is Spectre's role in this witch hunt?

Also, I would be accumulating all the information possible on other teams doing the same and similar things over the years. I watched an interesting documentary on Hank Greenberg the other day, and they were saying how the Detroit Tigers had an employee in the center field bleechers with binoculars steeling opposing catcher's signals - hence the Tigers hit a ton of home runs down the stretch and won the pennant. They were basically laughing about it and saying how it was just part of the game.

This witch hunt needs to come to an end, and then somebody needs to go after Walsh, Spectre, and whomever else has their dirty hands in this ugly affair!

  1. Former Cowboy HOF Coach...........Jimmy Johnson has said several times he also taped defensive signals and that is was of little use and not a big deal. So why have the Cowboys and probably the rest of the NFL gotten a free pass? Were the Dallas Superbowls of the 90s less tainted. BB and JJ are great friends and both great coaches, yet it seems BB has had his name and legacy along with all Pats fans and players historically tarnished................But not in my eyes, Go Pats and BB, More Rings Please.

  1. Not having read the agreement, I have to wonder if Messrs. Kraft, Belichik, and/or Pioli can sue walsh and his legal bankroller as individuals. Are they specifically blocked? Cuz if I were them and my reputation/financial interests had been damaged like this .......

  1. if walsh has some tapes how do you prove that the coaching staff saw them. if they did see them then the tapes are patriots property & mr. walsh stole them. prosecute him for theivary. anyhow this whole affair is bogus as teams have been using spotters with high powered binoculars for years trying to decipher defensive patterns. besides so many plays are changed at the line of scrimage determined by the offensive formation as is the offensive fomation changed by the defensive formation, a game of chess. please get a life & move on
