Pats sign Victor Hobson

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff April 7, 2008 03:15 PM

The Patriots have signed free-agent linebacker Victor Hobson to a one-year deal today, a league source confirmed. The signing was first reported by the NFL Network's Adam Schefter.

The 6-foot, 252-pound Hobson enters his sixth NFL season. He played the first five years of his career with the Jets.

Hobson, 28, played outside linebacker in the Jets' 3-4 alignment the last two years. While Hobson has not played inside in the 3-4, he could see some work there for the Patriots, who like versatility among their 'backers.

Hobson has been durable, playing in 76 career games, while missing only four. He has 58 starts, with 349 tackles and 11 career sacks.

Hobson, who played in college at Michigan, entered the league as a second-round draft choice in 2003. In Herm Edwards's 4-3 scheme, he was an outside linebacker. But when Eric Mangini arrived in 2006 and implemented the 3-4, Hobson was used outside despite not having the prototype height to grapple with offensive tackles and tight ends.

That's why it wouldn't be a surprise to see Hobson get some work inside with the Patriots, whose linebacker personnel breaks down this way (players in italics could line up at both positions):

Inside
Eric Alexander
Tedy Bruschi
Victor Hobson
Larry Izzo
T.J. Slaughter
Adalius Thomas
Mike Vrabel

Outside
Victor Hobson
Adalius Thomas
Mike Vrabel
Pierre Woods

  1. When he was drafted, he seemed like he'd be a good fit for 3-4 ILB. But I actually like what he's done with New York the past two years on the outside. He's pretty good around the line of scrimmage; he can take on blockers and can put a little bit of pressure on the QB. His problems come out in open space.

Good signing if the price is right. I hope he's not going to be slated as the starter though.

  1. I've never heard of him, but, he had pretty good numbers in '06; 100 tackles, 6 sacks, 1 int. Sounds like someone that may be able to step in and help out.

  1. If Tedy Bruschi is #54, what # will Victor Hobson wear?

  1. Inside
    Eric Alexander -- 6'2", 240 lbs
    Tedy Bruschi -- 6'1", 247 lbs
    Victor Hobson -- 6'0", 252 lbs
    Larry Izzo -- 5'10", 228 lbs
    T.J. Slaughter -- 6'0", 233 lbs
    Adalius Thomas -- 6'2", 270 lbs
    Mike Vrabel -- 6'4", 261 lbs

    Outside
    Victor Hobson -- 6'0", 252 lbs
    Adalius Thomas -- 6'2", 270 lbs
    Mike Vrabel -- 6'4", 261 lbs
    Pierre Woods -- 6'5", 250 lbs

It seems that anyone (based on size) can play ILB, but they want guys who are about 6'0"+, 250 lbs+ on the outside.

This has me wondering. Is it really a size thing that decides who plays ILB? If you look at the 2 guys who played in the ILB rotation with Tedy during the 3 Super Bowls, they were almost the size and weight of what you would consider a Patriots OLB.

    Ted Johnson -- 6'4", 253 lbs
    Roman Phifer -- 6'2", 248 lbs

Or even Junior Seau (6'3", 250 lbs)

New England hasn't seemed to have much trouble at the OLB spot during Belichick's time here. Perhaps it's more of an instintcs/football knowledge position? It would explain their difficulty in finding an ILB since 2005.

  1. Good Luck with Hobson the guy is very soft and has no speed, you cheaters can have him. I'm surprised your front office could not see that with there numerous spy gate videos!.. What a joke! figures a PAT's Fan would not know who Hobson is, never heard of him the pats only play the JETS twice a year and are in the same Division! Wake UP BOBBY! PAT's are going down this year they lost to many big players in free agency. They are going to have a no NAME secondary! Thank God Samuel is gone GO JETS!

  1. T-Mac32:

i don't care what teams you dislike, but when your team (the jets) has been an absolute joke for the better half of a decade, you have no credibility to talk about the pats. win some games, then talk to us.

our "no name secondary," as you called it, will still bring more than enough to the table to own the jets both times this year.

  1. I love Jet Fans, they think they have some major hold on the NFL , yet the last time they won anything was with a QB that wore pantyhose and appeared on Brady Bunch. Enjoy watching us sweep the AFC East again T-MAC32.

  1. T-MAC32 - Appreciate your love for the Jets, but last time I checked, the Jets haven't been to a Super Bowl since Joe Willie was a swinging single. Before you start talking smack, you should wait until the Jets hit the big dance.

  1. Wow T-MAC32...we are so scared of JETS, you guys won in Free Agency, great news, lets see how that helps you next season. Secondary is the only part that the JETS are better than the PATS. So keep dreaming, btw the offseason is not over. Pats didn't get Moss till the draft last year. So don't think you have "won the offseason". Pretty Lame anyway, win some games in the "real season".

  1. T-Mac32,

I like how you emphasized a no NAME secondary. That's right, there will be no "names" in the secondary. But, it will be effective and a winner.

Losing Samuel was huge, but he was a product of our system. Randal Gay? Big whoop. Eugene Wilson? hahahaha

You clowns signed Damien Woody to big $$$$$$ .... come on.

I feel sorry for you as you suffer through the next few years as the Jets self-destruct with bad FA signings and bad coaching.

  1. Hobson is a solid roleplayer on the Pats ... someone who can benefit from the line that the Patriots have. I agree that he'll likely play inside, something that the Jets were never able to do with him due to their depth and the LBs in place when Mangini took over. I think he'd be decently successful there, as he was often never in the backfield soon enough to get serious pressure on a QB as an outside player.

I don't think he'd project to be a starter with the other guys on the team, but he'll be a quality backup at the least.

Would you rather be in my shoes (3 sb's in the last 7 years), or be a jets fan, crying through a 4-12 season. Oh, Mangina needs to keep his mouth shut, 'cuz he was part of the so-called 'cheating' for years before he squealed like the little crybaby that he is. GO PATS!!!! J-E-T-S --SUCK SUCK SUCK!!!!

  1. Mike,
Hobson has good strength and is an above average athlete and he may be able to transition to the inside. He does use his hands well which always hepls. But that also helps maintain the edge, which seems like his strength. He seems best suited to playing outside rushing the passer as opposed to taking on lineman. He has played less than 10 snaps inside in the pros.

    I really like this signing.

  1. ProvMan, the Jets didn't win in free agency. They spent a fortune on a few players based on a half-season of work. Calvin Pace has been a marginal player for most of his career, until he suddenly found a niche last year. So what did they do? They spent more on Pace than the Pats did on Adalius. Then they spent something like $15M guaranteed on Damien Woody. Why? Because he had 5 good games at RT last year (after losing his starting job, by the way). They added Kris Jenkins, but gave up a couple draft picks to do it, and THEN gave him a big payday. He's not that big of an upgrade over Robertson to warrant doing that. Anyway, that's not winning in free agency. But their best move was signing Faneca to the all-time highest contract for a guard. Ask Steelers fans what they think of that move. These are all signs of a desperate front office trying to save their jobs.

Also, their secondary isn't better than New England's. Revis and Hobbs are practically twins -- both are solid tacklers who tend to keep the receiver in front of them, but neither of them do a particularly good job at making plays on the ball. The Jets don't even have a second corner. Rhodes is a very good safety, but he's not much better than Rodney. And Meriweather/Sanders blow away whatever guy the Jets are going to pull off the street this year and stick into a uniform.

  1. T-MAC32 who is going to knock the Pats off in the east? The hopeless jets? I dont' think so. I could start at CB for the Pats and they'd still win the east easily.

  1. OMG...HAHAHAHA....TMAC. You're so jealous. We're still going to beat you guys all day. We don't know who Hobson is. Thats what Bobby said. He doesn't know who the guy is but going off stats, he doesn't look too bad. Just like Slaughter. But if you knew anything about Patriot Football, then you would know that we bring in guys and let them compete for the position. The best guys play. Thats it. Also, the secondary isn't as suspect as you think. A couple legit Veterans in Fernando Bryant and Tank Williams along with some groomed young guys such as Meriweather, Richardson & Mixon. Don't also forget, Our offense is still going to smoke you with Tom Brady throwing to Randy Moss and Chad Jackson on the edges. Pats are going down? I don't think so...not to the Jets. We still have the best offensive line in the league as well. Good luck this year buddy.

    Oh yeah....Kobe kills TMAC.

  1. Hey Pats Fans :

T-Mac is only one guy. I am a Jets fan and can speak for many others when we say that we hope to smash you guys this year. That being said we totally give you props for all your accomplishments. Even the 18-1 season wasn't a complete waste. We still need a QB to stop you guys so you probably have at least another year before you need to look in the rear view mirror.

I always liked Hobson's toughness ... hell definitely play a role for you guys.

  1. I actually sat next to Victor in a class at Michigan and collaborated with him on a few of the group project assignments. Very nice guy, smart, humble, was a good player at Michigan and will be a role player with the Pats. That's all we're asking of him, to play a role and play it well. I think he'll do that and provide considerable depth at the LB position. At worst it's a 1 year signing. Great move by the Pats in my mind.

  1. You guys are brutal, you have a good team but do remember 18 and 1 no need to be cocky. I know a good team when I see one. But just remember Pat fans who stole who or should I say defected. Belichek is a coward he jumped ship to run to New England. Mangini only did the same thing. Right? He got out from under a thumb that was keeping him down. Just like Parcells kept Belichek under his thumb with the Jets. So are you really being fair. C'mon we Jet fans suffer enough I would like to see some of the play that you enjoy and maybe Mangini can instill it here. He'es not Beliichek but Bill wasn't Parcells when he came to the Patriots. After Herm Edwards we can only get better and will. Don't sell us so short because for some reason we always play you guys close to the vest. Enjoy Hobson he was average at best and remember even the great empire of rome collapsed and so will the Patriots, so enjoy it for now but it will end probably not by US but it doesn't matter JET FANS like to see the Pats lose to anyone.

  1. "JET FANS like to see the Pats lose to anyone"

And this is why you are all LOSERS. Patriots fans don't care who the JESTS lose to, as long as they lose to the Patriots. In fact, other than the 2 games the Patriots beat the JESTS in every year, Patriots fans don't think about the JESTS at all - while JESTS fans are enviously obsessed with the Patriots. Sucks to be you!

  1. "Mangini only did the same thing. Right? He got out from under a thumb that was keeping him down."

LOL.. So who's thumb held the Jets to ....wait how many wins did they have last year? Did they win any games? Oh wait, I know that Mathematically, they played Miami twice so they must have won at least one game.

Jets fans... time for a wake up call. Now that you've spent boatloads of cash in free agency, care to tell me how you will sign your draft picks to deals that will give you long term viability? If you don't have the cash, short term deals are your only option, which means your good players will just hit FA even sooner. Also, your veterans of any quality are looking at those free agent signings and wondering when their payday will come.

Bottom line: Jets may improve their record a little this year due to free agency, but overall they have done themselves in by spending unwisely.

  1. Remember when nobody had heard of Mike Vrabel, 3 SBs later, everyone is saying "what a steal", so Victor Hobron could be this yr's version of Vrabs. BUT... remember when Monty Biesel & Chad Brown looked like a smart move too?

I will say that no player that has left or been cut by the Patriots has ever amounted to great success (maybe Vinateri but his position is different, and look at how many times he choked last yr, so that move still stands as prudent). Look at the others who thought they were bigger than the team (Milloy, Law, Givens, Branch, Chatham, Banta-Cain, Graham, Ted Washington, McGinist, and the list goes on...). Forget winning a SB, I dont think any of those guys have even sniffed a playoff game. And paying more than min salary for D.Woody is crazy, he was damaged goods when he left the Pats 3 yrs ago, why would you pay top $$$ now? - What kind of center is he? The guy couldn't even hike in shotgun position!!!! Thats why he lost his spot to (then) rookie Dan Koppen for crying out loud!

And to TMac32, considering all the money spent on FAs this yr, enjoy your successful 6-10 campaigns this yr and the next because after that, you will be living in salary cap nightmare for the next 5. Thats a span of 15 yrs of mediocrity - Ouch!!!

  1. There were 5 good exchanges about the Hobson signing before the Mets, I mean Nets, I mean jets a.hole broke in with his groveling. The best thing to do is ignore the ignorant pu.nk and keep on talking New England football. The pu.nk can't talk intelligently about football if he follows the Junior football team from New Jersey. Let's get back to blogging about the Patriots LB situation - that's good stuff. Let's just ignore junior and his whining.

Nice post to bad you could not bring any football Knowledge to the cheating blog. Hey, VT Steve stop worrying about my education level and start worrying about the Pats Defense it’s old and slow with a no name secondary. The PATS offensive will still be productive again this year losing Stallworth will not hurt the team, but when your defense gives up more points then you score it’s called a big L! The Pats will begin there decline this year in the AFC EAST and will struggle to get 10 wins this year

  1. i like this signing...the guys a solid football player and the 1 year deal is very low risk. at the very least this move adds depth, giving belichick more flexibility to move people around and get the best backers on the field.

tmac the pats d will be fine and certainly wont give up more than our offense will score. the biggest change on defense will be having a healthy richard seymour on the field. historically the pats d has been very good with seymour and average without him. when healthy, his presence makes the whole front seven (particularly warren and wilfork) dramatically better. the d lines increased ability to control the line of scrimage will help both the run d and to free up the pass rush, which will help mask whatever weakness there is in the secondary. they'll be fine.
