TE Pollard to join Pats
Continuing to add parts to their roster that will potentially offer them more flexibility in the draft, the Patriots reached a contract agreement with tight end Marcus Pollard today, according to a league source.
The 36-year-old Pollard enters his 14th season in 2008. He caught 28 passes for 273 yards and 2 touchdowns last season, in his lone year with the Seahawks. He previously played for the Colts (1995-2004) and Lions (2005-2006).
Pollard (6-3, 255) joins a tight end group that includes Benjamin Watson, David Thomas and Stephen Spach.

Wow. This continues the Patriots strategy this off-season of freeing themselves up to take the best talent available on the draft board. None of the players match last years FA acquisitions, but they can all do well enough with support from a key acquisition at CB, DE/LB, or OL. Their signings so far give them the flexibility to pick the best value rather than be stuck with the best player in a particular position.
Can't wait to check the web Saturday night and find out who they drafted.
I still think they draft Brad Cottam with their #69 or #95 pick. Pollard just gives them some insurance if Cottam doesn't work out. Not sure what it means, though, in terms of the health questions regarding Thomas and Watson.
Pollard is more of pass catching TE, would rather have Kyle Brady back as 3rd tackle.
Marcus Pollard? As a Seahawks fan, we're happy to drop this washed-up TE.
OMG my pats better not mickfaddin or its over. hes gonna be the best rb in da league next season and if my pats draft him we will go 19-0
now we have a true te in pollard, top 10 te in da leage he can stretch the field and is a big redzone target. something we didnt have last season. watson is a bust and pollar will take the starting job from him.
we are officially gonna go 19-0. SUPERBOWL!!! ALL DAY!!!! BABY!!
Can he block?
This is the first offseason move I'm not thrilled with. I don't really see the need in adding him, but clearly the Patriots know more than I do.
36 YEARS OLD????!!?!?!?!?!?!!!? It's one thing to add depth to your roster, but adding age is a horse of a different color.
I don't know a heck of a lot about Marcus Pollard, although I'm slightly familiar with the name. Can anyone say he's anything more than washed-up? He's going to a BB-coached team, so there's GOT to be some value. Then again, BB has a weird tendency to obtain geriatric services from time to time. (See Scott Player, Doug Flutie- although I'm a Flutie Flake, Vinnie Testaverde, et. al.)
It's all about one thing for the Patriots now, and you can bet they don't give a rat's white, fat, overstuffed @$$ about "the perfect season" nearly as much as getting that @#%^*$ SuperBowl ring. Whatever it takes, just get it done. I loved watching the Patriots since I was a kid, I love watching them now. No bandwagon, just the real friggin' deal. I like the idea of a Patriots-Cowboys Super Bowl 43 next year!
In Bill We Trust...
Patriots-Cowboys? Please, Colts-Cowboys/Giants/Whoever for XLIII....By the way that New England is going, it's going to be a while before they return to the Super Bowl...
Im not getting too excited, either way. I'll be stunned and amazed if Pollard is on the final roster come the autumn.
Colts fans are hilarious. "By the way that New England is going..." What are you talking about Sbrooks? The only offensive player not coming back next year is Stallworth and now BB is free to spend the entire offseason address the defensive concerns. Ever notice how as soon as there's an area of concern, the Pats tend to shore that up pretty quick? What was the problem in '02? Run defense. Two SB's later they ran into a problem with talent at receiver. We all know how that worked out. Now their issue is the D. Doubt we'll ever see 18-0 again, but the Colts should know records don't guarantee titles. The Colts have never shown they can win year in and year out in the playoffs. Next year will be no different. The Chargers have a better shot with Norv freaking Turner.
Here's what Ted johnson had to say about Marcus Pollard (this quote was from a few years ago):
“The (Colts) don’t like it. I remember the AFC title game, they were done in the second quarter. They were done and they knew it. (Tight end Marcus) Pollard (now with Detroit) didn’t want to be out there, that field was a sandbox and they knew we were bringing it. And they couldn’t take it. They don’t like it – at all.”
Pollard is a young 36. Didn't play college football so he doesn't have those 4-5 years of wear & tear on his body. He tied WR Roy WIlliams for the team lead in catches in his 1st year in Detroit. Then Martz came in as O-coord in '06, and he likes bigger TEs (265 lb range) & doesn't throw to them much, both of which left MP getting a paid year off. Played well in Seattle but the Hawks don't run any deep or seam routes w/TEs & throw mostly to WRs. Biggest games were against straight cover 2 teams, but is still very effective in 3rd or 4th & short & in the red zone. Blocking skills improved dramatically in last 3 years in Indy, working backside protection for Manning while grooming DClark to play his old position of slot-TE/H-back. BB has been after him since he left Indy. Good value & teammate.
"Young 36" is what we Seahawks fans were told last offseason... he won't be on your roster come opening day, trust me.
And no, he cannot block.
just watch the Seahawks/Packers game from the playoffs, and see how effective Pollard can be!
Yeah, I was stoked last year to get Pollard. But after the "stellar" season last year, I say please take him. He really stepped down his game for the playoffs too. I think he dropped more balls vs. Washington and GB than he caught all year.
I am in south florida and i am a dye hard fins fan, but once again I am extremely impressed with the Patriotsoff-season moves. First off, they not only improved by releasing stallworth but picking up hobson was solid. The acquisitions of bryant, webster, williams, and sanders improves their second ary. From my television set Randall Gay got BEAT EVERY PLAY and Eugene Wilson couln't start at the U right now. Whom ever they draft is irrelevant at this point they are on the verge of another 16-0 season and us poor Fins fans envy. In addition, ithink their defense gets younger, faster and tougher with the additions of Hobson, Williams and Webster and I almost forgot dont they have Chad Jackson and David Thomas healthy again. Doesn't Jackson run like a 4.2 40 and Thomas was the all-time receiver at Texas. I live vicariously throuh you Pat fans!
