Tip of the cap to the scouts

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff April 25, 2008 08:47 AM

With the NFL Draft fast approaching, this is the time of year to shed light on the hard work put in by scouting departments across the NFL.

Scouts and personnel directors generally work behind the scenes, watching countless hours of tape, while also visiting college campuses across the country. In many cases, scouts are doing the grunt work necessary for teams to make the right choices, filing detailed reports on every prospect.

With that in mind, here is a look at the Patriots' personnel department:

  • Scott Pioli -- VP of player personnel
  • Nick Caserio -- Director of player personnel
  • Marvin Allen -- area scout
  • Larry Cook -- scouting consultant
  • DuJuan Daniels -- scouting assistant
  • Mike Disner - scouting assistant
  • Brian Flores -- pro scout
  • Tim Heffelfinger -- area scout
  • Frantzy Jourdain -- area scout
  • Nancy Meier -- director of scouting administration
  • Jay Muraco -- college scouting coordinator
  • Jim Nagy -- area scout
  • Kyle O'Brien -- area scout
  • Monti Ossenfort -- area scout
  • Adam Peters -- area scout
  • Tim Pichette -- scouting assistant
  • Bob Quinn -- regional scout
  • Jonathan Robinson -- regional scout
  • Brian Smith -- pro scout
  • Patrick Stewart -- scouting assistant

    1. Mike, I am wondering about the amount of movement from team to team that takes place with scouts? And, if it happens frequently, is there any sort of confidentiality clause they sign? It seems like (unethically) there could be teams that offer these folks significant salary raises predraft, and in return bringing team scouting info. (We see this to a small degree with practice squad players the weeks of games.)

    1. Standing Ovations!!!
When the media talked about the Pats and the draft, the names you always hear are Bill Belichick and Scott Pioli, but it was a team effort indeed. These guys have done a great job for the team.

    1. Kudos Mike, give credit where it's due. These men, and woman, are the first step in shaping the team into what it is today. Keep up the good work!

    1. Brian Flores also played at BC.

How about a tip of the cap to Thomas Dimitroff as well, now the GM of the Falcons.

    1. Check out Don Banks Mock Draft on SI.com. Love the trade & pick! Mayo is supposed to be a great fit for the Pats.
