Trade analysis

ANALYSIS

In trading their first of three third-round picks (No. 69) to the Chargers, the Patriots were probably asking themselves this question:

Based on the players available -- and with other 2008 third-round picks (Nos. 78 & 94) -- is it better value to add a second-round chip to next year's draft?

After making the trade, one can assume the team's answer to be "yes."

When assessing their current roster and needs, the Patriots feel they can get the same type of player at 78 and 94, while also giving themselves more future flexibility. They also fill in a hole on their draft board, replacing the 2008 fifth-round pick they had traded to New Orleans.

That's the type of move that reflects a regime thinking long-term.
