Trade details

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff April 27, 2008 10:23 AM

The Patriots traded their third-round pick (69th overall) to San Diego.

In return, they get a 2009 second-round pick and the Chargers' 2008 fifth-round pick (160th overall).

This is the 28th draft-day trade that the Patriots have made under Bill Belichick and Scott Pioli (2000-present), which reflects how much the team likes to deal.

  1. 2nd round pick is nice but I think pats still need to fill LB,S,CB and I thought they wouldve done that all in 3rd round with some decent players left... The Pats need to win NOW since the Jets,Bills, miami are breathing down their neck (esp. jets).

  1. Love the trade. Godfry went just before their pick, so maybe they didn't see great value there. The Chargers 2nd rounder will probably be late, but they also picked up a pick in the 5th to give them a pick in every round again. Vintage Belichick/Pioli.

  1. Why would the Pats pass on this pick and take an 09'?

  1. This could be a really good deal. Remember the Pats are an 18-1 team not a 1-18 team. There really is not alot of real needs here, you have two tackling machines in Victor Hobson and Jerod Mayo. We restocked with some decent CB's and drafted a CB with some upside in Wheatley and lots of speed. In essence we have traded a 69th pick for at worst a 2009 64th pick and moved up in the 5th round after trading away a pick. I think it;s a pretty good deal.

  1. i don't see it as being a bad thing, but I also scratch my head a little, if it was a swap with a lower echelon team we would be picking up a lower second round then i would say this was a great deal, but with this, I feel were not gaining enough, so we should of just take the pick and hope that 1-2 out of three third round picks ultimately turn out to be solid nfl starters or pro bowler
