Trade hot spot -- Picks 6-7
ANALYSIS
Just put the finishing touches on a mock draft that will run in Saturday's editions of the Boston Globe, and based on the scenario that unfolded, one aspect that stood out was that the Jets (No. 6) and Patriots (No. 7) should have some enticing trade-down options.
The feeling here is that it would not be surprising if both clubs back out of their spot. It would probably be their preference.
Based on the way I see it unfolding, with quarterback Matt Ryan off the board early, the key players are running back Darren McFadden and defensive lineman Sedrick Ellis.
McFadden is a most interesting case in that none of the teams in the top five have a clear need for a running back. The Raiders at 4 would seemingly be the most likely destination.
But if McFadden doesn't go there, it wouldn't be all that surprising. He then should get past the Chiefs (5), which would create some action for the Jets' pick (I don't buy they are taking McFadden).
An additional consideration is Ellis, a player whom the Saints (10) appear to be interested in trading up to select.
If he gets past the Raiders (4) and Chiefs (5) -- and the feeling here is that he will -- it would open up more action for both the Jets and Patriots.
There have been no trades in the top 10 in each of the last three drafts. But if McFadden and Ellis are available at 6 and 7, the feeling here is that the Jets and Patriots will be more than pleased to see a nice market for the picks, then trade out.

Reiss,
Jay Glazer says in his mock that the Pats are looking to move into the top 5 supposedly for Dorsey. I think the moving up part is right, but for Chris Long or Vernon Gholston, more likely Long. If the Rams pick Dorsey, what are the chances of the Pats moving up to #3 to grab Chris Long? He seems like a natural Patriot. Atlanta has talked about moving back, and there's the Dimitroff connection. What do you think?
I don't see the Patriots moving up to 3, Jamie.

What are the Rams seeking for the #2 pick? As a New Orleanian, I can tell you that everyone is abuzz with the idea that local hero Glenn Dorsey could end up in the Black and Gold. The fervor is so high that people are having crawfish boils and fish frys to watch the draft on Saturday rather than going to Jazzfest!!!
Mike, what will it take for the Saints to go from #10 to #2? Is there any chance Dorsey could fall past the second spot?
The Pats have always been good on drafting quality players. Having said that, all these past years, they were sitting at the bottom of the 1st round where nothing GREAT is left. And then this year when we have the 7th overall, all we heard is they are going to trade out. So where is the best place to pick??
This NFL draft just doesn't make any sense without a rookie salary cap. And honestly, it's a bit frustrating and disappointing if they do trade out.
The Patriots-jets conundrum just ,"gets curiouser and curiouser"(Alice through the looking glass). However, I think it time that the patriots trade with Oakland and offer to swap positions in the first round. NE would then select McFadden and in return Oakland would receive Maroney and our third round pick. It really does have value for Oakland as they only move back 3 places and still obtain a viable back, pay slightly less for the seventh pick and have a third round pick returned to them! McFadden represents the true feature back that would enable the NE passing game to be elevated to the next level. Sometimes you can not gauge everything by,"simply knowing the cost of everything and the value of nothing!"
the pats arent moving up
No way they give up Maroney. Maroney is proven and Mc Fadden has issues..that would be idiotic to give away Maroney for McFadden
I can't say that I get all the competition talk between the Jets and the Pats. If either team makes a reactionary move based on the other it's silly. And certainly the Jets have a lot more to worry about then the Patriots. They should be filling holes rather then trying to guess what the Pats are going to do.
Jets would be idiots to pass on McFadden or Ryan. Pats would be idiots not to trade out of that spot if either those two drop to them
The Patriots will stay with their pick and either select Rivers or Ellis. They need impact players that can apply pressure. The Giants moved the ball on them the last two sets without any pressure. They need studs in the front 7.
Jeffrey - I think the pats had a terrible draft last year, if you look at the players they actually took, the production they got from them, and the positions at which they are in need of now. I'm not talking about the Welker and Moss trades, those were great moves, but from a pure pick em standpoint they had a bust of a draft last year.
Dave - Maroney is hardly a proven player, he's missed too much action in his first two years to be put into the proven' player category.
IMO, they are in deep trouble at linebacker, both inside and outside. A rookie coming into this proclaimed 'difficult scheme' isn't going to be the impact player that fans think they will get. Maybe in a year or two, but the lack of drafting quality LB's in the past few years has caught up with them this year. Back filling with veteran FA's is OK if they are competent and available, both of which is not true this year.
Mike, any chance the Pats will trade #1 & 2 for Jason Taylor and their 3 - assuming the Dolphins would give in for that? Pats really aren't trrrying to get younger as much as they are reloading and, frankly, if we added one more playmaking linebacker we would be all set in my book.
Taylor just seems like one of those players that come hell or high water Bill is going after if he is available. I though the same thing about AD when I saw him return the fumble in the pro bowl and this seems like a match made in heaven.
That Pat's need to add young, athletic, impact DB's/LB's with their top four or five picks. I do not like the idea of Ellis Hobbs being our #1 corner or a MLB rotation of Bruschi, Seau (maybe) and Hobson. We need to add youth to the defense.
Would your opinion about Dorsey change if the Patriots felt like they needed to replace Seymour due to chronic injury/high pricetag/expiring contract situation?
Lets face it, even when he plays the guy has not been the same ever since our Glorious Leader's boneheaded decision to use the best (and one of the highest paid) defensive player in the NFL as a short yardage fullback and tore up his knee.
We would probably have at least 2 more Super Bowl trophies right now if Seymour continued to play at his pre-injury performance level. This is a once in a decade (for teams like the Pats) opportunity to get someone like him. It makes sense.

Hi Eric, I don't see the Dolphins trading Taylor to the Patriots. I also don't see the Patriots making that deal.
