UDFA Gary Guyton signs

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff April 28, 2008 09:39 PM

Georgia Tech LB Gary Guyton, who ran the fastest 40-yard dash time among linebackers (4.47) at the NFL combine, has signed with the Patriots as an undrafted free agent.

Guyton (6-foot-1 1/2, 245 pounds) projects to inside linebacker in the Patriots' 3-4 alignment. He is also considered a hard hitter on special teams.

Of all the undrafted free agents targeted by the Patriots, Guyton is arguably the highest priority signing.

Here are some of his numbers from the NFL combine, which helped his stock rise:

  • 40-yard dash -- 4.47 (1st among LBs)
  • Vertical jump -- 36.5 (1st among LBs)
  • Broad jump -- 10"6'' (tied-1st among LBs)
  • 3-cone drill -- 7.07, (tied-8th)
  • 60-yard shuttle -- 11.57 (5th)

According to the Pro Football Weekly draft guide, Guyton only had 15 reps on the bench press, so strength could be an issue.

    1. Interesting, it was reported he signed with the 49ers yesterday. Guyton has the size, ect. but he doesn't play that powerful. Vince Redd is the best and most interesting UDFA signing by the Patriots.

    1. How didn't this guy get drafted? Starting linebacker in ACC with those kinda measureables, you'd think somebody would lock him up in the 7th round at least. Is his strength really that much of an issue?

    1. Tommy Blake, DE, TCU was a pre-season All American sack machine. He was tracking towards being a 1st round pick until he was diagnosed with clinical depression, causing him to have a troubled senior year.

Since then, he has received treatment and seems to be doing well. Although he was not drafted for these reasons, he is a young, talented kid who deserves an opportunity if he is "OK" in terms of medical management of this illness.

This kid deserves a shot. Maybe the Patriots would take a look. What a great story if Tommy was given the chance to rise again. If Tommy is successful, it would be a welcome addition to the Patriots pass rush and an equally wonderful victory for Tommy.

      Any thoughts?

    1. this is an interesting signing and it seems to follow the teams committment to improving team speed. I'm suprised that they didn't draft him in the 6th round instead of Bo Ruud, judging by some of the measurables he had at the combine.

    1. How could a guy perform so well at the combines and had such a standout senior year go undrafted? What made everyone pass?

    1. Dan, Did you read Reiss's note at the bottom? 15 reps on the weights is very poor - WR's can usually do more than 15 reps. With his speed he could possibly play in a tweener role like Don Davis did. He's a long shot to make the Patriots

    1. didn't reiss say he only did 15 reps so strength could be an issue? Also, we(at least I) haven't seen him play so we don't know if he has done well in games or not...or perhaps he has some issues as well

    1. This seems like a great UDFA signing. You can always learn to lift more weights. If the guy isn't a total moron he may stick with the team.

I still can't figure out the O'Connell draft, unless Brady is more distracted (whether by supernmodels or ankle injuries) than we all know....

    1. With that speed and vertical jump if he lost 25 lbs he could be a viable safety. Assuming he has good hands, quickness, and intelligence.

    1. Any relation to Myron Guyton?

    1. Hey, Guyton is the future baby. He has speed and strength, he also has great skills on the field. Be ready for my cousin in 2008 and beyond!

    1. 15 reps might be an issue but that is not a permanent number set in stone. The Patriots do have a strength program and can easily improve that number.

    1. Hello, Gary is my brother and we went through high school and bonded alot. For teams to pass up on my brother is a mistake. He's always possed the truth talent and always had the speed. Bench reps doesn't determine if u can get to the ball and make a play. That's what he does makes plays and all that matters is results obliviously teams don't base it off that. But regardless Gman cause thats his nickname is going to make and the patriots are a perfect fit. With veteran lb's on there way out 2 yrs and he will be filling the void. They stated that there was going to be a draft pick to watch out for.. Here is your man Gary Guyton... Remember his little brother told You so first...

    1. The 15 reps was the cause the bar hitting the rack and his rhythm was thrown off. He had a redo at his pro- day and was much better. I've personnally watched him play in person and he is a beast out there on the field, the Patriots are lucky to have signed this talent when so many others where after him.

    1. I'm totally proud of Gary! I was his 6th grade social studies and language arts teacher back at Hinesville Middle School, and he was a smart, talented kid back then. He's done our hometown proud.

    1. Wow, its now a year later and I believe Guyton will be a great player in the NFL. Last season he stood out to me even on special teams and when he was in coverage I use to think damn this guy is too big to be that fast.
