FOXBOROUGH – Nose tackle Vince Wilfork spoke with the media today at Gillette Stadium following Bill Belichick’s pre-draft press conference, in part to publicize his annual draft party in Milford, Mass. Proceeds from Wilfork’s party go toward diabetes research, a cause close to Wilfork’s heart, and information can be found on Wilfork's website and at Pinz' website.
Some football nuggets from Wilfork:
Looking good, feeling good. Wilfork appeared as if he is in tip-top shape. He noted that he started his diet early this offseason, and has already lost about 10 pounds. He’s listed at 6-foot-2, 325 pounds in the team’s media guide. While he’d like to bulk up this year, Wilfork said it all comes back to conditioning.
Contract not on his mind. With two years left on his contract, Wilfork said after his press conference that an extension was not on his radar. He hopes to finish his career in New England.
18-0 vs. a Super Bowl ring. Arguably Wilfork’s strongest comments came when he spoke of the team falling short of its goal last season. “18-0 really doesn’t mean anything,” Wilfork said, “because 18-0 doesn’t put a ring on my finger.” Wilfork, who indicated he has yet to watch the Super Bowl, said whatever it takes to get that ring is what he’s committed to doing.
Recapping his 2007 fines. Wilfork talked about how he was fined three different times last season – for a low hit on Bills quarterback J.P. Losman, for a facemask on Chargers running back Michael Turner, and for pointing his finger in the helmet of Giants running back Brandon Jacobs. Wilfork acknowledged the “Jacobs one was just stupid on my behalf” but he felt the other fines were excessive. He said he spoke with all three players – Losman, Turner and Jacobs – and there are no hard feelings. He said people who know him realize he is not a dirty player.
At this rate he will be back to 325 lbs soon.:-)
I hope he signs a long contract next offseason.
Wilfork, we luv ya, I hope you end your career here. But guess what, I think that most of the NFL and definitely the fans from around the league don't care about your intent. They would all pretty much agree that 3 fines in one season = dirty player. You just can't keep doing stuff that gets you fined and claim that you are not a dirty player.
