Wilson: Strong 1st impression

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff April 11, 2008 07:55 AM

The St. Petersburg Times notes today that former Patriots safety Eugene Wilson has made a strong first impression with the Buccaneers.

"You can't say enough good things about him," defensive backs coach Raheem Morris said in the piece. "He's looking like a stud right now."

The Buccaneers are experimenting with Wilson at cornerback, the position he played at Illinois before moving to safety with the Patriots.

  1. He won't be looking like a stud for long.

  1. Thats nice. We thought he could be a stud too ABOUT 4 years ago. Best of luck to EW.

  1. I've never been more "confused" about a player than I've been with Eugene Wilson. Several years ago, I was salivating at what he would be, right about now. Then, his career took a dip akin to the economy. I wish him well, but I don't think he'll ever regain that form he had several seasons ago.

  1. Wow! What a revelation. I mean give me a break, what are Buc's coaches going to say right after they sign him to a free agent contract? That he stinks? Why not go look at his lowlights from last year to see if he's a stud or not. Good luck to EW regardless.

  1. The Pats, IMO, used Wilson in the wrong manner, at safety. His normal position is at corner, and he will still be a major contributor at the corner. The Pats made a huge mistake with Hobbs, the weakest link on the field, at corner instead of Wilson.

  1. What happened with Wilson at the Pats?
His fall from grace was pretty swfit.

He always plays well on my Madden.

  1. Mike Allen, you're always talking about Hobbs being the weakest link on the field. Who else could have been? The three all-pro defensive linemen? The two all-pro outside linebackers? The all-pro cornerback on the other side of the field? Maybe the hall-of-fame ILB or hall-of-fame SS? Who's left? Oh, Bruschi, the leading tackler on the team. Or Sanders (who I'd actually argue isn't as good as Hobbs).

It's not like we're talking about the Saints D here. So calling him the weakest link on the defense is like saying that Kevin Faulk is the worst HB on the team.

  1. in madden he's great! good hands...real life not so much. better luck to the bucs. i wish we kept him and got rid of hobbs. hobbs plays decent in madden too..not as many picks as wilson though. we need a sick corner, safety, and linebacker asap

  1. I don't believe in 1 word he said. A stud? Maybe a stud in their 2nd team practice. By the time pre season is over, we'll ask him the same question.

  1. Best like to Eugene... but I'm not going to miss him. I've got a name for you: James Sanders. Patriots better lock up Sanders to a long term deal awfully soon, while he's still cheap. Next year, we'll have one of the best safety rotations in the league. Granted, we could use another pass defense specialist (although Meriweather is solid in that area).

  1. Off-topic, but jeez, what's with the angry "DO NOT HIT THE SUBMIT BUTTON MORE THAN ONCE!" copy? Maybe if the form worked as expected you wouldn't have to yell at your users.
