Belichick's complete CBS interview

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff May 17, 2008 09:42 AM

CBS News has posted video of Bill Belichick's complete interview with Armen Keteyian on its web site. Here is a link to the full interview.

The plan here is to listen to the interview and check back shortly.

  1. Mike - I watched the whole interview and thought it really made the 3-minute version aired last night look like a hatchet job. Could you please help with a couple of things:

    1. What is the EXACT text of the NFL Bylaw that Belichick cites? I'd really like to understand what his point is for the (pre-2006) videotaping, and no one will quote the text of the relevant Bylaws here. Is there reasonable support for his interpretation, prior to 06?

    2. Is ANYONE in the media going to follow up on (a) if opposing coaches saw the filming and cared and (b) if anyone else was doing it? There have been plenty of stories of former coaches alluding to filming, and Walsh himself said he saw other teams filming. If so, as a Pats fan, all I can say is we should DEMAND a full investigation and pelaties concomitant with those imposed on the Patriots. Belichick at the end of the interview says that the team has cleaned up the entire organization. Now it's time to see the same standards applied to the other 31.

  1. BB comes across a lot better in the full version. His argument is a lot more convincing in its entirety. Too bad the d-bags at CBS edited it down to make him look bad on TV.

  1. Hamilton- back during the season when this whole thing started I was watching the FOX pre-game show and Jimmy Johnson was saying that when he coached the Cowboys he also did the video taping. He said they had tried it but he didn't feel like it really helped that much so they stopped doing it.

  1. I absolutely agree that Belichick looks a lot better in the full interview than in the snippets aired on CBS News. Instead of using a whole news segment and giving the story a good 7 or 8 minutes, they only devited a few minutes to it and presented the story to make it look like Belichick's only motive was to discredit Matt Walsh. Belichick would have looked better on TV if they had aired the parts about how filming was NOT used in the same game (an important fact ESPN et al. has ignored), and the parts about how the information they "cheated" by "stealing" is available to 70,000 people watching the game and is perfectly acceptable to gather in other ways. Unfortunately, most of the U.S. lives southwest of Hartford, CT, and they would rather have Bill characterized in the way CBS presented it than in a way that presents the coach in a better light.
