Walsh tape of Pats-Cleveland game

(NFL Network screengrab)

NEW YORK -- Coaching signals from a Nov. 11, 2001 game against the Bills, and a Dec. 9, 2001 game against the Browns are now being shown.

These signals are similar to what was seen before. They include a shot of coaches giving signals from the sideline, a shot of the scoreboard/time clock, then an end-zone view of the play. The cycle continues throughout -- coaches signals, shot of the scoreboard/time clock, end-zone view of the play.

These are part of the tapes that Matt Walsh handed over to the NFL. The league is showing them to media members after having destroyed tapes handed over by the Patriots back in September.

  1. Mike, since it appears that these tapes are filmed from a pressbox or coaches box wouldn't it be considered legal under the NFL rules?

  1. These tapes confirm that the Patriots did not break the rules, at least when it came to these particular games, because it is OBVIOUS that the tapes were not shot from the sidelines! This saga becomes more ridiculous by the moment. After watching various members of the media fall all over themselves to declare themselves protectors of the 'sanctity' of the game of football over the course of this morning and make total fools of themselves in the process (ahem, Cris Carter, Mark Schlereth), it just confirms that the coverage of this has been nothing more than a witchhunt. Goodell himself JUST stated that it is PERMISSABLE under NFL rules to scout opposing teams signals, yet we have talking heads around the country pontificating about how the Patriots were gaining a huge, unfair competitive advantage and ruining football. It makes me sick.
