Kevin Jones visits

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff May 12, 2008 08:32 PM

The Patriots visited with free-agent running back Kevin Jones last week at Gillette Stadium, a league source confirmed tonight.

The speedy Jones, a first-round draft choice of the Lions in 2004, is recovering from a torn ACL. The Patriots had been high on Jones when he was coming out of Virginia Tech, and were prepared to scoop him up with the No. 32 overall selection in that draft, but the Lions swooped in with a trade and picked him at No. 31.

The Patriots are well stocked at running back, with Laurence Maroney, Sammy Morris, Kevin Faulk, Heath Evans and Kyle Eckel atop the depth chart.

The NFL Network's Adam Schefter first reported on the Patriots' visit with Jones..

  1. Why are they suddenly so into guys recovering from bad injuries?

  1. Have you seen Jones' stats when healthy? He is a top of the line back. Low risk high reward ala Victor Hobson.

  1. Let's see Gick.

Jones is 6-0, 228 and is only 25 yrs old. If fully recovered he brings an excellent combination of power and speed. He is a hard-nosed runner who has great lateral quickness and speed to create explosive plays. He has good vision and the change of direction skills, he is a solid cutback runner which would be a perfect fit for the Pats scheme. He displayes good leverage on blitz pickups as well which is also very important in the Pats' offense. He runs crisp routes and has good hands and is excellent after the catch.

You bring him in and have your doctors take a look and if satisfied he would be a cheap and solid pick up.

  1. If Kevin Jones is even 80% of what he was before the torn ACL, I would MUCH rather see his name on the roster than that of Kyle Eckel! If he passes the physical that I'm sure will be part of the visit, let's at least get him into mini-camp, and see if he's still "Kevin Jones".

  1. Buy low, sell high. I's good smart business

  1. Kevin Jones won't be ready by mini-camp, but hopefully he will by training camp... and that will obviously be a big factor in whether or not the Patriots sign him.

He seems like a perfect fit, but don't forget that the Patriots have BenJarvus Green-Ellis, who I think can be Maroney's future compliment.

  1. I don't think it is correct to say the Patriots are well stocked in part by virtue of having Kyle Eckle. We have lots of new linebackers that can take his special teams contribution, and he's useless as a running back. Kevin Jones on the other hand, was a legitimate first rounder and if he didn't play for a crappy team and get injured he could have been a top flight back. I think this is a great idea if they can sign him.

  1. I do understand the concept of signing a slew of guys at cheap salaries with low signing bonuses in the hopes that a couple of them will pan out.

But nearly all of their offseason pickups have been coming off bad injuries, and their 2nd round pick plays with a steel rod in his arm.

I just don't want to see half the team on IR.

I think going after underrated guys, or guys who play on bad teams so their skills don't get properly noticed, is a much better utilization of the buy low strategy than going after guys coming off bad injuries.

  1. mike,

Under BB last year we carried 3 RB and 1 FB with kyle being moved in and out of the practice squad. Has BB carried more than 4 RB in the last 8 yrs.

  1. Potential Kevin Faulk replacement if healthy.

  1. Picked 31, not 30. Good idea though.

  1. Kevin Jones when healthy would be the Pats best back, NO QUESTION ABOUT IT! He was drafted #1 by a crappy team in Detroit and had a great rookie year. Than a couple of fluke injuries and a pass happy offense with a terriable line he is now healthy and ready to play on a real team. He has a "pro day" set for June 28th for all the teams to see just how healthy he is. If the Pats want to sign him they should do it before than.
