Practice attendance
FOXBOROUGH -- The Patriots have concluded their passing camp practice today. A total of 36 players were spotted at the session, most of them newcomers who are getting up to speed with the team's system.
The presence of third-year tight end David Thomas was notable, as Thomas missed most of last season with a broken foot. He participated in some drills, but not all of them.
Veteran linebacker Victor Hobson and veteran safety/linebacker Tank Williams also were on the field. As free-agent signees, they are learning a new system and thus the coaches probably felt they could benefit from some on-field work.
Here are the players we spotted:
Quarterback
Kevin O’Connell
Matt Gutierrez
Running back
Kyle Eckel
BenJarvus Green-Ellis
Wide receiver
Sam Aiken
C.J. Jones
Robert Ortiz
Matthew Slater (also played safety)
Ray Ventrone (switched from his natural safety position)
Tight end
Tyson DeVree
Stephen Spach
Jonathan Stupar
David Thomas
Offensive line
Jimmy Martin
Ryan Wendell
Defensive line
Steve Fifita
Chris Norwell
Henry Smith
Le Kevin Smith
Kenny Smith
Santonio Thomas
Casey Tyler
Inside linebacker
Victor Hobson
Jerod Mayo
Bo Ruud
Outside linebacker
Gary Guyton (also played inside)
Shawn Crable
Vince Redd
Cornerback
Mike Richardson
Antwain Spann
Terrence Wheatley
Jonathan Wilhite
Safety
Willie Andrews
Mark Dillard
Tank Williams (also played linebacker)
Punter
Mike Dragosavich

Mike,
Anything stick out with Crable during practice? I think he could be intriguing as they move through camp and into the season. He could also be an under the radar guy that contributes down the line I think. Any thoughts?
Mark L., nothing in particular, but that doesn't mean much. It is difficult to keep an eye on everything at a practice like this. Plus, there is no hitting, and that's when we'll really start to see.

hey Mike,
with regard to the other rookie linebackers Redd and Ruud - did anything stand out? Redd seems to have the ideal build for an OLB in this system - would be nice if he made the squad in the same fashion as Mike Wright and Pierre Woods.
Hi Mike...
I know Guyton is absurdly fast, but does he have the strength/block-shedding ability to play ILB in our scheme? Or is he just on the smallish side to play 3-4 OLB and they're moving him around a bit to see where he might stick? Do you get the sense (obviously based on limited input thus far) that he has a real chance to make the team, or is he just drill fodder?
I'm curious about the Patriots 3-deep at the Punter position. Hanson has been here for 1 year, we picked up veteran Scott Player from Cleveland in April, and now Dragosavich is a pretty intriguing prospect on his own with those long legs. Were the Patriots dissatisfied with Hanson last year? Any insight as to which player the Patriots will ultimately select?
No Matt Cassel?
With O'Conell now in the fold as a 3rd round pick shouldn't he get his butt in practice
Whats the Deal with this? I find it a questionable decision
Hi Bob. It's tough to keep an eye on them all, but I thought it was interesting that Ruud continues to work at strongside inside linebacker alongside Mayo. And Redd caught my eye by sprinting ahead of most teammates at the end of practice, which I saw as a sign of top conditioning. Jack, it is too tough to tell now on Guyton until there is some hitting. I do think he has a legitimate chance to make the club. Marie, I think the punter situation will be one to play out over time, getting a feel for which player is most consistent. I'd say Hanson is the leader right now. Sanjeev, the decision on Cassel is made by coaches, not Cassel himself. They probably wanted to get Gutierrez and O'Connell some reps.
