Specter's statement

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff May 8, 2008 05:22 PM

Senator Arlen Specter (R-Pa.) issued the following statement regarding the eight videotapes that Matt Walsh has turned over to the NFL:

“I think it is very unfortunate that the NFL has already started its ‘nothing new’ spin before watching the tapes or finding out what Mr. Matt Walsh has to say. Let’s see where the evidence leads.”

  1. Arlen Spector is on his own mission. He is a disgruntled fan & Senator. First, the NFL is sueing his largest political contributor Comcast, the Pats beat both his Pennsylvania teams in Championship games, and nobody is buying his book. It is a shame that the Senator is using his position and wasting taxpayers money to further his personal agenda.

  1. I think Specter has a better use of his time than to worry about a football game. Isn't the US economy going up in flames? How about Specter focus on that.

  1. So........now that there is no walkthrough, Spector continues to try to find some way to save face for the Cable giant that feeds him & his lawyer.

Very sick man - sadly, in his body, but what happened to his mind??.

  1. What is it with this guy? Does this Senator do anything but Sports? Tell us Honorable Senator Spector, how is your investigation of the cause for the Iraq War coming along? Isn't one? What are you doing about jobs, the economy, health care, anything sound interesting to you yet? How about global warming, national security, AIDS, the wars? Too busy eh? Well at least we can all sleep easier knowing you are saving us from the Patriots!

  1. Could it be anymore transparent what Specters motivation is? He is in the back pocket of Comcast!!! This entire thing is politically motivated and I hope that the Republican party suffers as a result. Why aren’t any of the New England senators standing up to this phony? I know why the NH ones aren’t – no backbone...

  1. This is killing Specter. For a man of his position, he should be unbiased, his statemeant sounds like sour grapes. He wanted a Rams practice tape and he still hopes something else comes up.

Funny how Walsh didn't offer the fact that he does not have that tape. He let the whole world assume he had one. Now Specter can't stand the feeling of the wind leaving his sails which will lead Specter to becoming a non-story again. As he should be.

  1. Arlen Specter was a Republican Senator I admired until he completely lost his way. Its almost as if he is clinging onto hope that he will get his "gotcha" moment because it would be his best public moment, well, other than getting into a pissing match with Ted Kennedy during hearings of course, and notice, its just Specter and not other members of any congressional hearing panel.....unbelievable, this makes the steroid freak members of Congress look noble.

  1. Senator Kennedy why don`t you sit on this guy. He is wasting my tax dollars on this, what about education upgrades, the war in Iraq, the sharp increase in home forclosers, rising oil and gas prices, Why don`t you spend some of my hard earned money to find out how much more the oil companies can fleece us of our hard earned money......Gee just a few thoughts that may need more attention than the Patriots!!! Maybe he needs a little wake up call!!!

  1. My boss would have a fit if I went off investigating unemployment rates in Pennsylvania, (rather than what he pays me to do).

People in his state voted for him to serve them. It would be a compliment if this was calculated hype on behalf of Comcast because if he believes what he is doing is a public service, he is truly pathetic.

  1. Excuse me, Mr Senator!
Maybe you should stick to straightening out the country BEFORE looking at spygate.
Maybe you should have had Big Ben's motorcycle company invistigated
Maybe you should stick to politics and leave football to the Comish.

With all that is going on with this country, maybe you should investigate those issues first.

  1. Dear Senator from Comcast,

Gas is almost $4/gallon and my food budget buys half as much food as it did a year ago. Right now I am having a hard time feeding my family and paying my bills. Even though you don't represent me (I have an antenna, not cable), could you please try to fix the inflation issue we've been having, that is, if you have time to help out after you deal with those damn Patriots and how they are trying to ruin America and let the terrorists win. Thank you!

  1. What business is this of Spector's anyway? The Patriots were accused of and admitted to breaking league rules. No laws were broken. This isn't steroids or organized betting. This is off sides or pass interference. League rules. Does Arlen Skeletor understand this fact? The Patriots were fined and penalized a draft pick by the league, as was their right and within their charter.

And I sure as hell don't want my legislators wasting their time on crap like this.

is wasting our time and money on this crap? I heard that a US Senator is paid $660.00 per day. We ALL pay this guy's salary and we sure aren't getting any bang for our buck. Time to retire.

  1. If you go to opensecrets.org (or other campaign finance websites), you'll discover that the largest contributor to Spector's campaign is Comcast's law firm. And that the 2nd largest contributor is Comcast itself.

And what cable company is most at war with the NFL?

    'Nuff said.

  1. There should be no doubt about what's happening here. Senators have one objective in their political lives: to get reelected. Why? Because they get huge salaries, great retirement plans than don't get dumped on the PBGC and they get free medical care for life.

That's why they pander to lobbyists and accept campaign contributions from people with their own agendas. Spector will be a hero to Eagle fans and collect large campaign contributions from Comcast. Sickening, isn't it?

  1. An open letter to the people of Pennsylvania:

Seriously, can you guys do something to rein this guy in? He's sort of embarrassing your entire state. Actually, he's embarrassing the whole country, but all we non-Pennsylvanians can do is sit back and admire his adroit reading of the pulse of the nation. This is EXACTLY what I want and need our elected officials to be focusing on. Someday, years from now, some 5th grader will be sitting through history class, hearing about the tumultous times at the turn of the century, how the US economy came within a hair of crashing, how good, honest, hardworking people lost their homes, how terrorism was gaining more than a foothold, and the children will cry. Then the teacher will brighten them up by discussing Honest Arlen, and his crusade to make the NFL more accountable. Bravo!
Anyhow, back to Pennsylvania residents: can you folks please stop this man? There must be a PA newspaper willing to run a "do you think your senator is a fool" poll...

  1. Is this where our tax money goes? To pay a Senator to look into a football game? Mr. Spector, once you have eliminated poverty in the US, stopped all crime, and assured peace throughout the world, then you can go and play with a football game. Until then, you have a lot of real work to do, as outlined by many of the other people posting on this page!

I was extremely disappointed with your response to my email request of why your office was wasting my $$ on this. The response, which I'm sure was sent to many others like me, and I quote

"1961, Congress enacted the Sports Broadcasting Act, which
gave the NFL a special antitrust exemption. This exemption allows the
NFL as a whole to negotiate broadcasting rights with television networks
    to show their games. "

Really shows what your about, COMCAST

  1. Arlen should look for more evidence of the Patriot's cheating in the 1,000,000 million missing emails lost by the Bush Administration. Maybe he can subpoena Bellichek and Bob Kraft can give him executive priviledge.

  1. By using the term "stolen tapes" it's pretty clear that The Globe is not a seeker of the truth. The Patroits are cheaters, no if ands or buts. We need to terminate the team and give Los Angeles the 32nd team to teach all cheaters a lesson. The people of Boston are good people but we must terminate cheaters and see to it that this coach never coaches professionally again in America.

  1. Dear Mr. Specter: I am not one of your constituents, but I am a registered voter in this country. Believe me, in Arizona, that's an important distinction because without my passport and the history of a family geneology going back about 200 years in my wallet, I could be deported. Have you read the headlines lately? I couldn't expect you to understand what's going on down here in the muck, but in my neck of the woods, four elementary schools are closing because of lack of funds. In fact, the only thing keeping the economy alive down here is the air force base ---- oh, wait a second, you may not understand the reference. There's a "war" going on. My retirement has been delayed by about a decade, but that's okay because, comparatively, my real income has only been falling since about five years ago and the real hit on the 401K has only been in the last 16 months or so. I can make it up before I die, but that's pretty much a sucker bet, don't you think? Sport is recreation. What you do should be about life. Please re-think your priorities. You are a man with many important issues going on in your life. Can't you give this up with dignity and recognize that the rest of us only want to believe that the people in whom we have invested our future are paying attention to important issues? Move on. We did. If humiliating the coach of the Patriots has become more important to you than ending our occupation of Iraq....well, I guess this harangue doesn't make much sense to you either......

  1. Arlen Spector's beginning to act like former Senator Alphonse D'Amato--trumpeting OUTRAGE and dire warnings whenever a controversy arises. The man should retire; why the people of PA keep re-electing him while he's fighting cancer is beyond me.

Leave the taping investigation to Roger Goodell, Senator Numbnuts.

  1. Spector has become irrelevant to the United States Government. His party lost power in the Senate. He will be 80 years old in 2010 when he could theoretically run again, and if he does he will probably be saddled with the Iraq War in that election.

So with nothing else to do, he reverts to form and becomes a white knight tilting at the nearest windmill. Once again he assumes the mantle of the people's champion just like in his old District Attorney days. Note that "the people" are Philadelphia voters and none of his voters live near "the villain". Just one problem. It's a game! The national treasury is being robbed blind, Senator!

I find it unfortunate that it costs me $3.89 for a gallon of gas. I also find it unfortunate that there are homeless shelters in my area in need of funding.

  1. Huh, a Republican politician is accusing someone of "spin" before finding out evidence? At least irony is not dead.

Arlen, again, why not the zeal in discovering why the CIA defied federal court orders in destroying interrogation tapes if you are so interested in videotape. That seems like something a bulldog on the Judiciary Committee might want to sink their teeth into instead of talking with a golf pro thief.

They don't know what to do about our economy, social security, medicare, gasoline prices, the housing industry going down the tubes and a bunch of other important issues that need to be addressed. We need to impeach all of these idiots that worry about what's going on in the NFL instead of doing their damm jobs!!!

  1. Let's face it, there is only one acceptable solution - Bill Belichick must die. There is no way around it, I personally think alot of Mr. Belichick, but it has become obvious that Mr. Spector, ESPN and Comcast will no longer accept the tepid punishments of Mr. Goodell and that the only acceptable outcome is for Mr. Belichick to be killed. This is after all a football game, a form of entertainment and a sport that demands to be taken seriously, unlike $120 oil, inflation, a liquidity crunch, recession, and war - Mr. Spector doesn't have time to waste with such other matters.

  1. I have the greatest respect for Mr. Spector, who has served his country well over these many years, but his obvious personal vendetta against the Patriots franchise is getting old, and real sports fans who know that pro football is not a perfect world would like to move on and enjoy the 2008 season. If he won't let this go, then in fairness the senator needs to open a complete investigation of cheating in the NFL, and start by discussing the matter with ex-Philadelphia QB Ron Jaworski, who admitted on TV to winning an NFC championship game using stolen defensive signals.
