'90 Pats voted to dubious honor
USA Today conducted a "tournament" among some of the worst teams in the history of the NFL, with fans' voting determining the "winner".
The 1990 Patriots won the title, topping the 1976 Buccaneers.

Not likely people are piling on their negative opinion of 3 Super Bowls, 4 Super Bowl appearances, an AFC championship appearance, an undefeated regular season, a 21-game winning streak, greatest coach, etc... all since 2001 - no resentment and jealousy??? (insert sarcasm)
The Patriots received the highest vote totals each round - that was opinion, not analysis...
Worse than Tampa Bay, come on.
The '90 Patriot team is an embarrassment (incidentally the year I bought my season tickets), not their only embarrassment of on- and off-field futility. The majority of their Foxboro history, until 2001 was an embarrassment too frequently bush-league Patriot owners, coaches, and GMs once or twice a decade minimized their screw ups enough to let the talent go out and play some decent football - but that perfect storm of dunces more then often embarrassed the NFL and some great talent on the team.
Through thick or thin, I love the Patriots!
They must have forgotten last year's Dolphins.
I have been watching the Patriots since 1980 and I can tell you that any one of those teams (Excluding the 85 team) were bad. One of the happiest days of my life was when the old red jerseys and pat patriot went away. We had some good players on those teams, but the old red jersey and pat patriot are synonamous with loosing seasons.
I agree, the dolphins last year were the worst team I ever saw. They only won the 1 game by a last minute luck play. But the 1990-91 Pats are right up there too.
People's memories, like Rich Ellis', of the old Pats are distorted by the truly awful 1990-92 squads. Prior to that the Pats were mostly teams with a lot of talent but who underachieved and were undermined by bad coaching/bad management. The reason those Pats were frustrating is that the talent was always there to make you believe they could, just maybe, get it together. Nothing like the current Dolphins. This is particularly true of the 1976-1988 squads. As long as Hannah was around it seemed like there was an outside chance (well, except for 1981). From 1976 to 1988 the Pats went a combined 113-83 and went to the Playoffs 5 times, the Superbowl once. That's pretty respectable, it's just that Boston fans aren't satisfied unless their team is consistently a champion. But compared to the Browns, the Buccaneers, the Saints, the Jets, or the Falcons during those years, the Pats were pretty decent.
The Patriots were bad but the Bucs lost all their games two consecutive seasons if I am not mistaken 0 - 26 !!! Even the most hardcore Patriots fan, which most of you and I myself am a part of, eventually starts to see the comedy of this incredible hatred.
"You can either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villian!"
"The reason those Pats were frustrating is that the talent was always there to make you believe they could, just maybe, get it together."
My point exactly.......
Thanks for the bad memory and the shiver up my spine i got just thinking about how bad those early 90s teams were.
Original poster said it best, The vote had nothing to do with that team (even though they were a bad team). It had to do with petty jealousy over the current pats team and all the hatred generating towards it due to thier success.
This was one of the only ways haters could get back at a class fanchise. "If we can't beat you now we'll beat you then". Truly pathetic.
As far as that particular vote goes, IMO, there was a Rich Kotite led jets team on that list. They were BY FAR the worst team in history. Last years miami team was very bad, but nothing like that jets team. Just bad, bad, bad.
To show the hate that still goes on toward the pats, there's also a mascot contest going on in cbs sportsline, and to no surprise the pats mascot didn't make it out of the first round.
