Kaczur runs into trouble

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff June 4, 2008 08:49 AM

Patriots offensive lineman Nick Kaczur was arrested in April on a charge of illegal possession of prescription painkillers and then secretly cooperated with the federal Drug Enforcement Administration in a sting operation that resulted in the indictment of his alleged drug supplier, the Boston Globe reported today. The information is according to a lawyer and two people briefed on the investigation.

  1. Great - the guy turns into a junkie, and then when he's caught he turns into a rat to save his hide. Just the type of top-notch character guy the Pats need.

  1. I've lost count of how many patriots have been busted for drugs in the off-season.

  1. what is going on in the house of Belichik? This is not what the Pats need...Willie Mac where are you to keep these punks in line?

  1. Oh, oh! This must be why the Pats signed OT Oliver Ross last Monday. If not, it turned out to be incredible timing!

  1. I can't believe the comments so far.

What happened when Brett Favre got addicted to pain killers? Did Packers fans call him a junkie? It's a problem, but he isn't selling them and he isn't shooting guns at people. Drug addiction, including alcohol, is something that affects everyone.

Yeah, he turned into a "rat," but that's only because of the BS war on drugs in this country. What a waste of money; it's a rat race, excuse the pun. We spend billions on the DEA to do cases like Kaczur's, and what comes out of it?someone else selling O

  1. 100 pills every couple of days!?! He must have been dealing as well.

  1. While this is not good, it is amazing how people want to trash him. Brett Farve had a pain killer addiction and his fans supported him 100 percent when he went to rehab. If Kazcur does the same I support him 100 percent. I also support him helping the law catch the parasites that sell illegal drugs as well. Call me a rat as well, but I believe it is important to rid the world of these "business " people who prey on the addictions and poor judgment of others.

  1. Andrews was arrested for possession of weed as was Faulk. Marijauna is criminalized but it's very minor. I have met plenty of violent drunks over the years but never a violent pot head.

The oxy is a much bigger issue but not surprising with the abuse these guys subject themselves to. Favre had a Vicodin addiction some time ago that he had to kick.

  1. And the hits just keep on coming.

I'm afraid to ask what will happen next. Just when we can focus on the mini-camps, now we're going to have "oxy-gate" for the haters to pile on. I can't wait for September 7th to get here

  1. "charge of illegal possession of prescription painkillers and then secretly cooperated with the federal Drug Enforcement Administration"

Doesn't sound like much of a secret to me .....and he denied but all kidding aside whether he did or didn't I am sure the feds kept it a secret for a reason the guys has a family and aided in busting a drug dealer after he got caught. Whether he was saving his own skin or not now that the paper has put it all over the place he should fear reprsials against his family....I am sure the guy they arrested was not the only guy involved. Way to go media outlet wat to put his family in more jepordy then he allready did himself....the only thing missing is his home address but I am sure the bad guys can follow the reporters to his house....

  1. Brett Farve was never arrested for possession of drugs - Kaczur was. Big difference...........

  1. As a society we are so quick to discard people when they make a not so wise decision and kick them when they are down. When someone becomes an addict (we should be very familiar with that in this state with all the alcoholics) it is not due to a character weakness or flaw. It is a disease, period end of story. When people become addicts, they lose their ability to choose from right and wrong. Per the American Medical Association's definition this case would be classified as a disease not a character flaw as Goaler 1 states. That's a fact, not my opinion. There have been plenty of athletes and people in general who have overcome addiction.

I hope Nick finds the strength to get over his addiction.

NYPatsfan, I think you may be a Jets fan in hiding. Gloat now this is your time because come the season we will be doing all the gloating as usual.

  1. We're all very naive if we think NFL players' abuse of painkillers is unusual, although this appears to be an extreme case. Kaczur should be glad he got caught because now he's forced to address his situation truthfully and hopefully get cleaned up. More raw meat for Pats haters though...I'm sure ESPN is all abuzz.

  1. The article says that Kaczur was buying 100 pills every few days. That is not a minor drug problem, that's a SEVERE drug dependency issue that likely has developed over a long period of time. It's basically the equivalent of injecting heroin multiple times every day. What the Pats and NFL do to address it is minor compared with the battle he faces with himself. He needs 90-180 days of intensive inpatient rehab. And even then his chances probably are not great. While you can call him a rat, someone who is doing drugs is not in a rationale frame of mind.

  1. With that many pills purchased, my fear is that he is supplying his teammates.

Posted by Jim June 4, 08 05:00 PM
  1. I don't think Kaczur was supplying his teammates. I've read many studies on Oxycontin and the addiction is similar to heroin. Someone with that addiction is probably very private about it and definitely would not distribute a drug they're so dependent upon. I'll bet the dealer doesn't use the drug nearly as much, if at all.

Although, the dealer is the one the Feds must seek out to eventually find the source of the supply. It's up to Kaczur to kick the addiction however he decides to do it.

The NFL has determined this is a legal matter and it will be up to BB to decide how to handle it. It's sad that anyone lets drugs interfere with their success and represents a strong organization in that way. I'm pretty sure that is how BB feels about it as well.

  1. OXY Contin is VERY addictive. VERY.
    This guy need a hand
    Not a fist.

  1. oxycontin is an opiate, same as morphine and heroin

Rush Limbaugh was doing obscene amounts of pills too

  1. Was anyone on here disturbed that ESPN choose to show Logan Mankins twice during the Kaczur segment on Outside the Lines yesterday? I believe Logan and his family deserve at least a public apology from ESPN for showing his head shot twice while showing some Kaczur video during Bob Ley's voice over. That was just wrong and I hope ESPN pays dearly for his sloppy display. It's all the more unprofessional behavior by ESPN when one considers the plight of Mankins and his brother with regard to their unfortunate car accident several years ago. I for one will be sending a "heads up" on this to patriots.com, as well as something venomous if I can find an OTL email.

HEY ESPN! GO HAVE A SANDWICH!!!

  1. Mike - I just sent this (see below) in to Front Office on patriots.com and sent a copy to the OTL Email ...

    Dear Mr. Kraft,

I have been very disturbed since watching the Nick Kaczur segment on Outside the Lines yesterday. On two occasions during Bob Ley's voice over of Kaczur video, they showed head shots of Logan Mankins on the sideline. I believe, at least, a public apology is in order from ESPN to Mankins and his family. I felt this was a sloppy display and could prove to be quite damaging to Logan's reputation. I'm not sure if you have gotten notice on this yet, but I wanted to make sure you had the information just in case you hadn't heard. I know you're a man who wants to hear bad news as early as possible. Thank you for your time and consideration on this matter.

Posted by BurkieInBoston June 5, 08 10:44 AM
  1. Jeesh! I hope none of the Patriot's stars, like Brady, hang out with this guy. After snitching and all, I'd be looking for stray bullets. Training camp is going to be fun! Bring your bulletproof shoulder pads.

Ugh, will all this bad news ever stop?

  1. This is the third day in a row that the Globe has been buddy-buddy with an alleged Oxycontin dealer's lawyer. After the third day, this somewhat implies some illicit connection to the dealer. Has the Globe been played like a violin?
