Matthew Slater signs

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff June 14, 2008 09:03 AM

The Patriots have officially signed a draft pick, with fifth-rounder Matthew Slater inking an undisclosed deal on Friday. Slater is the first of the team's seven picks to sign.

Slater has been working at both safety and receiver. He was considered one of the best special teams players in the draft, and figures to contend for return duties as well.

The Patriots traded a 2008 fifth-round pick and 2008 seventh-round pick to move up in the fifth round to select him. Slater, who played at UCLA, is the son of Pro Football Hall of Fame offensive lineman Jackie Slater.

Overall, the Patriots drafted seven players, and have a 2008 rookie pool of $4.34 million to sign them.

  1. over-emphasis on thinking you know one thing about football better than piolicheck, pal.

ever read moneyball, find under valued talent and exploit it.

  1. Investing in under-valued commodities wasn't an idea invented by moneyball. And I'm not sure what that has to do with my comment that it seems like Belichick puts too much thought into and emphasis on his special teamers at the expense of other positions.

I wouldn't be second-guessing pioli and belichick if they hadn't choked in the playoffs for the 2nd year in a row.

  1. Gick I don't like the tone of most if not all of your comments. Your either a very depressed fan that needs meds or a troll who poses as a fan day after day. Your always negative and making remarks that sow discord and doubt.

Why is every loss a choke. The giants D played a great game on the most important day of the season. Our Oline played a horrible game its as simple as that. That doesn't BB/Pioli choked. Get over yourself- no one wins them all but at least every year the Pats have a chance what more can a fan ask for.

  1. Sorry Larry, but when an 18-0 team loses the super bowl it's a choke. The Giants are a good team, but the patriots were one of the best teams of all time. No reason they couldn't have pulled out the last game.

I'm currently most displeased with the secondary and Brady turning into a jetsetting celebrity. I was happy with the Jerod Mayo selection, and I'm glad that Adalius is moving outside. So not everything is negative.
