Specter not pushing probe

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff June 17, 2008 10:00 AM

In a meeting with the Philadelphia Daily News editorial board Monday, Senator Arlen Specter (R-Pa.,) said he has no plans to ask Congress to look into the Patriots' videotaping procedures.

"I've gone as far as I can," Specter said.

Specter had little to no support among his fellow senators, some of whom criticized him for focusing on the issue at a time when Americans have more pressing concerns.

Specter was the most vocal critic of the NFL and its investigation of the Patriots.

  1. Specter was totally biased and not objective. If he was so concerned about the integrity of "sports". He had plenty of opportunities to speak out recently: Baseball Instant Replay, NBA officiating and where was he on Big Brown - this horse had over 100 million dollars bet on it and finished dead last. The jockey even admitted he reigned the horse in. If I had money on that horse I expect him to run and try to win.

So it's very very clear where that Specter was looking through "green tainted spectacles" and trying to compensate for Quaterback who was puking in the huddle in the 4th quarter (having an anxiety attack).

    Specter = PINHEAD

  1. "[Specter] said he's 'not interested' in recent allegations made by former NBA referee Tim Donaghy that the league asked some refs to manipulate games to boost ratings or ticket sales."

I assume this is becuase boosted TV ratings benefit Comcast more than clean games do.

  1. Senator Comcast should be ashamed for using his position in the Senate for his own agenda. Ditto Zimaman, love the green tainted specs.

  1. We are at War, paying $4.00 a gallon for gasoline and probably headed
for one of the worst recessions in recent history and this guy sets his sites
on the Pats. Way to have your priorities set. I'm glad the rest of the Senate
knows it has more important things to deal with.

  1. If the 76ers had been worth a damn in the last 5 years he would have wanted the biggest congressional inquiry into NBA Officiating ever. Arlen Specter is the poster boy for term limits.

  1. Great!

May be now he can focus on other trivial issues like the economy, gas prices, education system, housing crisis, inflation, and the war...

Then again, he'll probably find another important issue to fight...like Celtics winning the NBA championship this year!

He must be the pride of PA...

  1. I'm glad it's finally dead. I have no problem with a probe as long as it probes ALL TEAMS! Mitchell didn't investigate just Barry Bonds so why are they interested in just investigating the Patriots?

  1. He's a republican alright and now he's going to focus on getting John McCain elected so we don't end up with Barack for President......

  1. Specter is just realizing now that there are more important things to be dealt with in Congress, wow! Him being a Republican or Democrat has nothing to do with him being an idiot. I bet Senator Specter is running for relection soon, and how do you get votes, you stand up for the team your constituents love and admire, and you bash the team that kicked thier butts!
    YEAHHH CELTICS, GO PATS!!!!

  1. Maybe Specter pulled that Spygate antics to help McCain win Massachusetts in November.

  1. I'm glad the latest Specter story offers commenters here yet another opportunity to complain about other things Specter "should" be worried about that also have nothing to do with the U.S. Senate.

At least Specter has finally been informed that he's wasting his time.
