Wilfork talks Celtics

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff June 18, 2008 09:30 AM

As the Boston Celtics made their run to a 17th NBA championship, it was commonplace to see Patriots nose tackle Vince Wilfork courtside with his wife, Bianca.

Wilfork was at the Garden for the Celtics' title-clinching win last night, and took some time this morning to talk some hoop.

Seeing you courtside at these games, I'm curious, how did you become interested in basketball?
"I am an athlete. I love all sports. But I have been a Celtics fan my entire life. I am not just one of those people that got caught up in the season. I have been going to Celtics games since I have been here and like I said the Celtics have always been my favorite basketball team."

What are your thoughts on the Celtics winning it all?
"You know, my wife has said it from the beginning that they were going to win it all. I am not surprised. They are a great team and they came together this season like you can't believe."

What similarities do you see between football and basketball?
"I mean, teamwork is teamwork. I don't care what you are doing. I think being able to go out and play and give it 110 percent is the most important part of any sport. And in any sport you have to be unselfish and really go with what is working and get the job done. The Celtics have really done that this year."

How nice is it to be in the offseason and enjoy the competitive arena in another sport?
"It's great. Bianca and I have gone to a lot of games during our season but it is nice to know that we can relax and enjoy ourselves without having to worry about work the next day."

How would Kevin Garnett fare at wide receiver?
"He's got good hands [smiles]."

  1. Great era for Boston sports fans. It just brings home the memory of that terrible day February 3,2008 when we lost the game that most of us thought would never happen. Can't wait for the season to start.

  1. I think the Pats of 2008 would beat last year's team if they matched up. I think this is going to be a tougher and more hard hitting bunch with more team speed at LB and DB. If Seymour is back and they don't get killed with injuries I see this team closing the deal.

Btw how come there are no 7 foot tall recievers? i honestly don't think i know any good recievers who are taller than 6'5(plaxico & randy).

  1. There are no seven-foot-tall receivers because they'd snap in half at the first hard hit. Look at the NBA -- once you get past 7', 7'2" at most ,the players (Bol, Ming, Muresan, etc.) tend to be very frail and injury-prone (guys like Mark Eaton, who were over 7'2" AND heavily muscled, were and are very rare). The human body has a natural size range, once you get outside that range it's hard to maintain sufficient muscle mass, bones deform and break, etc., etc. (look at the injuries those NBA guys seem to always have).

So most 7' tall+ receivers would show up for training camp, and at some point during camp their local team equivalent of Rodney Harrison would blast them as they came across the middle and promptly convert them into two (not overly useful) 3.5' tall receivers.

And any receiver 6'8" or taller who was heavily muscled wouldn't have the needed speed. So a lack of speed or a lack of ability to not break down from the heavy hitting are why we don't (and won't) see Garnett skying for the Randy-Moss-style 'jump ball' passes any time soon...

  1. Harold Carmichael was 6'8 and 225 with decent speed but he was he last receiver who fits the mold you described......

  1. I could see a 6'8", fairly light (for that size) receiver having just enough speed and durability both to succeed. But I think a few more inches of height -- the 7' mark -- is where you'd start getting the injury-prone guys. I have to admit, it'd be neat to see a 7'10" receiver simply stand in the end zone and catch lobs all day... or at least until a D-back decided to saw him in half at the waist, you'd hear the crackling noise all the way up in the 300 section seats. It would be an exceedingly brief phenomenon.

Carmichael was cool. Good stats for his era. Is he still working in the Iggles' front office?
