Mayo at second practice
Patriots first-round pick Jerod Mayo is present at the Patriots second practice of the first day of training camp. He was seen on the field chatting with fellow linebacker Victor Hobson.
Mayo, who reached a deal with the Patriots today, missed the first session early this morning while his contract was finalized.
The deal that Mayo signed is a five-year deal worth $18.9 million with $13.8 million in guarantees and bonuses.
By comparison, last year's No. 10 overall pick, Houston Texans defensive lineman Amobi Okoye received a six-year, $15.4 million deal with $12.785 million in bonuses/guarantees.
(Editor's note: Ian Greengross, the agent for Okoye, said his client's deal was five years, with the sixth season being voidable, for a total value $17.6 million, including a fifth-year escalator of $2.2 million.)
In this case, the five-year deal negotiated by Sean Kiernan and Mitch Frankel is to Mayo's advantage as it will get him to free agency faster. The top 16 picks are eligible to be signed to six-year deals.

Wow we got screwed then. Not only $1.1 more in guaranteed but also one year less?
Did we blink or something? C'mon Pioli.
If you avg out the deals the Pats paid 13% more thisyr for the 10th pick vs last yr while the going rate thus far in the 1st Rd, with the exemption of Long, has been well over 25%. So how do you figure the Pats "got screwed" JJCRUISER??
Cruiser,
See what happens when you jump the gun. What do you think of the Pats deal w/Mayo now that Gholston got a 5 yr pack w/$21 mil guaranteed and a total value of $50 mil. In case you've forgotten, Gholston was the #6 pick and Mayo #10. I seriously doubt that Gholston is 2.5x the player Mayo is. This shows you what a great move the Pats made in trading down from #7 to #10 getting the player they wanted and avoiding saving over $31 mil, now that's good business.
It is interesting (if not concerning) that it's only a 5-year deal.
Is it because they've learned from Ben Watson's contract standoff (and everybody lost there) or because they believe that CBA will not be renewed and hence there will be no free agency?
