Gene Mruczkowski retires

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff July 26, 2008 08:30 AM

The Patriots announced this morning that veteran C/G Gene Mruczkowski has retired.

To fill Mruczkowski's roster spot, the team has re-signed Lav Bauta.

Mruczkowski added depth to the interior of the offensive line, and was considered a bubble player to make the 53-man roster.

The team has been thin on the line, however, and Mruczkowski's retirement only highlights the lack of depth at this time with Nick Kaczur, Stephen Neal and Oliver Ross all on the PUP list.

This also means a bit more of the spotlight now shines on players like Russ Hochstein, Dan Connolly and Billy Yates, who like Mruczkowski, play both center and guard.

  1. It's been a couple years sign an offensive lineman retired during camp. I'm glad the tradition has returned. :)
