Patriots & Chargers

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff July 16, 2008 03:14 PM

Don Banks of SI.com takes a closer look at the offseason approach of the San Diego Chargers and sums it up this way: "Call it an obsession, a fixation, or at the very least a more than understandable preoccupation. But from top to bottom as an organization, the Chargers have it for the Patriots, in spades."

The Patriots have knocked the Chargers out of the playoffs in each of the last two years.

Banks looks at some of the Chargers' recent acquisitions and notes that they seem tailored to facing the Patriots. For example, San Diego's first-round draft choice, cornerback Antoine Cason, was plucked with the idea of defending Patriots slot receiver Wes Welker.

  1. Best thing that could happen to a Patriots - they're so obsessed they'll inevitably lose to a lesser team before they get the Pats.

  1. Just so long as they keep beating the Colts.

  1. I've beleived that most of the reason for the decline in dominance last year was a result of extra preparation by teams starting two or three weeks ahead of their matchup against the Pats. Seems popular to say "their team is old and slowed down throughout the year" but I beleive this has a lot more to do with it.

This is the first I've heard of manipulating a roster like this in football, however. In baseball, I believe selecting players to beat specific teams in the playoffs is pretty common isn't it?

  1. AJ Smith should realize his two biggest obstacles in overcoming the Pats. First his coach,Norv Turner who when he won his first playoff game celebrated like he just won the Super Bowl and second his loud mouthed trash talking QB Phillip Rivers.Talks the talk but can't walk the walk. Personally I can't stand that crybaby LT. He's always talking trash about the Pats. He knows they can't beat them .

  1. Best thing that could happen to the Patriots - Belichick will be forced to coach and not rely on video tape, tuck rules, or pretty boy Tom to bail the Pats out. 2008-9 will be very similar 2002.

  1. Good article, the Colts did a similar thing to get their rings. Thats why you never hear teams like the Colts, Steelers or Chargers discount what PATS have done. They know it is hard and try everyday to matchup and surpass.

For Pats Haters, are you suprised Smith didn't mention buying as many video cameras? since thats what you guys think.

  1. The Chargers will be the first team to go 19-0 since they'll be healthy and are warmed up to their coach. And October 10th is not a good day for Pats fans.

  1. In his 60 minutes interview, LT actually discussed retiring in the near future.

I don't think he has the heart to win.

  1. Hey Chris Tunley?
What's San Diego's record against the Patriots in the past 8 years? For that matter, what is LT's record against them?
Since you think the Patriots "cheat" so badly and wont win without video camera's........how well do you think roid boy Merriman will do without his rage fix? Just another average pass rush off the end is my prediction..so before you accuse others of cheating, take a quick look at your own team.

  1. A quote from the article: "Last year, when Smith drew some heat for giving up four draft picks in order to move up 25 spots in the second round and select versatile Utah safety Eric Weddle, it was aimed at adding another talented piece to a Chargers secondary that suddenly had to counter a Patriots offense that was undergoing a major upgrade at receiver (Moss, Welker, Donte' Stallworth) in the spring of 2007."

Umm, correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Weddle selected PRIOR to Moss becoming a member of the Patriots? Coincidence, or they didn't feel they could adequately cover ... who, Jabar Gaffney? Reche Caldwell? Kelley Washington?

  1. LT and the the Chargers don't have enough will to beat the Pats.

We are going to be even more hungry than last season and I think we'll take care of business this year. 18-1 but we won't lose the most important game.

  1. They can take whomever they want. They still have Turner as a coach and Rivers as a QB. That does not add up to excellence.

  1. Hey Chris Turley,

time to move out of your mom's basement and get a girlfriend.

  1. Steve,

Merriman will still care the hell out of any offensive lineman in the league. He's a man among boys. Besides, I'm not a Charger fan. I'm a lifelong NY sports fan, including the Jets, Yankees, Knicks and Rangers.
