Super Bowl hangover?

With Patriots training camp set to open Thursday, the Globe's Bob Ryan and Chris Gasper utilized the Globe 10.0 extra-point question Tuesday to talk about whether New England can avoid the Super Bowl hangover that other big game losers have fallen prey to over the past decade.

  1. It's 2002 all over again. Remember the Patriots lumbering through that 9-7 campaign after winning their first Super Bowl (capped by a particularly disheartening 30-17 loss to the Jets in Foxboro before X-Mas).

  1. Haha. The only way this team is going 9-7 is if you kidnap Brady and Moss, JetsFan. Even then, they still might win 10.

  1. From bosoxj in Cali via Waterville Maine; I think I still have a Super Bowl hangover! I'm just now able to start getting back into football. Being a Pats fan, living in California, It's almost a burden. There is so much venom all around about spygate. Sometimes I avoid the topic. Having my teams integrity questioned (and they are my team being from New England and bleeding Patriot blue) is almost by proxy having my integrity questioned. Ten years ago I got Pat the Patriot tattooed true and blue on my arm. After years on languishing with the Pats, watching Bledsoe carring them on his back, it became a badge of honor to be a Pats fan. Then the Super Bowls came. WOW! You throw in the Sox victories and these years have been some of the best of our lives. So the real question should be how do the Pats get rid of their SB hangover? For the players; putting their blood and sweat and emotion on the line every week for their team must allow them to empathize with how their fans feel. So they must have a SB hangover because I know for sure Pats fans do.

  1. I hear that having the easiest schedule in the league is the perfect cure for any hangover

  1. LOL Jetsfan....with teams like the Jets and the Dolphins in the AFC east, they would win it with 9-7 because your team A. doesnt have a QB....B. doesnt have a DL......C. and most importantly, doesnt have a coach.
But get over yourself, the only way the Pats go 9-7 is if Brady, Vrabel and Warren were out for the year.
Now the Pats winning the Super Bowl....that may be tough this year. They will breeze through the schedule, but the AFC playoffs are going to be a beast...I am worried that any team that makes it out of the AFC alive wont have anything left in the tank for the SB.

  1. Too strong a team to allow that to happen, and what appears to be a more favorable schedule in relation to recent campaigns. Dates with SD and Indy will be critical for both home field advantage in the playoffs and a needed bye (Pats regular season bye this year comes early). As always, injuries to key personnel will play a role, as it did to SD in the playoffs last season, and the Pats against Indy the year before. Stay healthy and #4 could/should materialize.

  1. This year's Patriot team has the easiest schedule in years and is a lock to win 11 + games...they could win 13 or 14 if the rookies and new players meld together to form a cohesive defensive unit......Staying healthy will be key....Seymour back to 100%...Morris was missed last year as Maroney had to carry a big load down the stretch.....Plenty of competition to watch at WR, LB,DB, and TE as well as backup QB.......Should be a fun and interesting TC and preseason.....

  1. Everyone needs to get over this "Easy schedule" business. There's no such thing as an easy schedule in the NFL.

Every team has attempted to make improvements over last season. Additions to weak areas, shoring up their strength. No one is sitting still. No one picked the Jets to be strong Mangini's first year and no picked the Jets to be so bad the following year....The Chargers lost their first few games to some fairly weak teams before they got their feet under them.

Finally, the Giants barely made the playoffs...and probably shouldn't have. They really were terrible untill they got into the playoffs.
There is no such thing as a weak schedule...only weak minds, jetsfan haha minds,,,,minds, jetsfanjetsfan, jujhaha)

  1. We all know there are no guarantees, but a new position this year for the Pats, they lost last year, the last game of the year. I'm sure the off season felt long....
Brady should be as motivated as ever with weapons in hand. The question is on defense, linebacker speed and can we cover?? DB's the presure will be on!
I am a Pats fan living in Giants country and I am tired of seeing "the escape" and "the catch". Lets go Pats- ready for 2008-09 to begin!!!!!

  1. It's been 13 teams that have suffered a SB "hangover" since the 1990-1993 Bills teams that reached 4 straight SB's. As this team proved last year, records and streaks are made to be broken. I just feel that the Pats will be on a mission this year to finish the job they couldn't last season. It won't be easy, the NFL never is, but it will be fun.

  1. I have a good outlook for the year. I want us to stay hungry in every game and win enough for home field in the playoffs. That done we keep our focus on still being hungry the big one. Last year we talked all year about the perfect season and forgot to leave room for desert
