Wheatley signs

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff July 22, 2008 04:57 PM

The Patriots announced the signing of second-round draft choice Terrence Wheatley today.

The signing means the lone draft choice left unsigned is first-rounder Jerod Mayo.

A bit from the team's press release:

Wheatley, 23, played in 40 games with 28 starts for the University of Colorado over four seasons (2003-04, 2006-07). The 5-foot-9-inch, 183-pound cornerback recorded 156 tackles (124 solo), 1.5 sacks, 14 interceptions for 154 yards and two touchdowns, 31 passes defensed, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries. Wheatley also gained 1,350 yards on kickoff returns in his collegiate career. His 14 interceptions tied the second highest total in Colorado history, while his total of two interception returns for touchdowns was one shy of the school record. As a senior in 2007, Wheatley was a first-team All-Big 12 selection by the Associated Press and the league's coaches, starting 10 games and totaling five interceptions and 12 passes defensed. He became the first Colorado player in 25 years to record three interceptions in a game when he achieved the feat against Texas Tech.

  1. Great news! It is very important to get these rooks into camp this year, especially Wheatley, who has a shot at filling one of the biggest question mark spots on our roster.

Mayo! I am looking at you! Get your butt signed. Don't worry about the money. You will make more than you need, and if you perform well, you will make even more! However if you hold out, you will lose time needed to come up to speed on this defense, and that could hurt your overall value in years to come!

  1. Stan:
If you were in Mayo's situation you would do the same thing. In the NFL contracts/money are rarely fulfilled. My guess is he and his agent are trying to get as much money up front as possible. I am sure they have seen what the Pats do with contracts of players they deem too expensive. Not that I am against the system, I am a firm believer in players earning their pay, but the system is what it is (who does that sound like?) so why not try and get what you can?
With the history of the Pats and rookie contracts, I am sure they are trying to lock up Mayo for more years, at a lower cost, and that isnt always in the best interest of the player.
