Bits from Belichick

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff August 29, 2008 04:25 PM

Patriots coach Bill Belichick held his standard day-after-game conference call with reporters (4 p.m.) and there were a few subjects of note touched upon:

  • 1) Roster movement in the works. Belichick made the point that the Patriots brass watched the Giants’ game and quickly moved into personnel meetings to shape their final 53-man roster. “There are a lot of different scenarios involved, not just the 53-man roster, it also includes the practice squad, the various injured lists, and at this time of year there is a lot of conversation back and forth between all teams in the league about the personnel movement from team to team,” he said.

  • 2) Different line of thought on deferring the opening coin toss. The Patriots won the opening coin toss for the fourth straight game, but unlike the first three games, they did not defer their choice to the second half. Instead, they elected to receive. Belichick had previously mentioned the Patriots would most often defer if they won the toss, but he seemed to be reconsidering that line of thought. “We talked about that and I think there are some advantages to deferring, but we’ve played in an awful lot of games where when you win the toss you take the ball, and we’ve done well in a lot of those games, too,” he said.

  • 3) Defensive communication device not a top priority. Asked if the Patriots used the communication device in the helmet of a defensive player, Belichick said: “We didn’t really do all that much with it.” He explained that with players shuffling in and out of the game, it didn’t seem like a good use of the team’s time. Belichick said the staff has not finalized how it will use the device during the season – and mapped out different scenarios of usage, such as only utilizing it in no-huddle situations.

    1. Has Cassel been released yet?

    1. We can only hope they will release Cassel. I think O'Connell looks better than Cassel or Gutierrez. But lets keep our fingers crossed that Tom stays healthy!

    1. I think they will pick up the just drafted qb O'Conner? Seems like a good developmenal long term replacement for Tom. Waiting for the opener, still questions and in the long run they will be a ok. GO PATS!!!!

    1. Why defer the coin toss when the stats show that their record is incredible when they score first. Let's be honest. With the D that they have... they are going to need the ball as often as possible this year.

    1. It seems better to defer until the second half. Possession of the ball during the second half is at a premium, because in a close game it gives your team more control over the outcome.

    1. Great idea to get the ball first, assuming the Patriots score, but after watching that offensive line we might be wishing the D gets the ball first. The defense has been playing vanilla all preseason and willl be much better in the regular season, but the offensive line can't generate a running game, and worst of all, can't protect the QB, and those things should be done no matter what. Good luck with that.

    1. This is going to sound crazy but don't worry about Cassell. I think he's going to be fine. Think about it. Now that he's made the team, Belichick as smart as he is would not keep him around all these years if he didn't think he could perform. He could have any backup schmo in the league (culpepper, holcomb, ratay) and I'm sure there are others. But he's kept Cassell all this time. Cassell from USC mind you, where they don't exactly recruit slouches. I think the exhibition games this year were a joke and the real assessment of people's performance was in camp where we don't get to see everything. I mean Stephen Spach made the team for Christ's sake! What the hell did he do?

    1. Let's go get Delta Oniel a proven coner back & Willie Anderson an offensive lineman that can play guard
