How Favre deal impacts Pats
ANALYSIS
With the Jets acquiring quarterback Brett Favre in a trade late last night, how does this move affect the Patriots?
From this perspective, assuming Favre is in the right mindset after not landing in his preferred destination (Tampa Bay), the Jets just got better.
And thus, so did the AFC East division.
The Patriots face the Jets on Sept. 14 -- Week 2 of the NFL season -- in what will be Favre's home debut. The teams meet again later in the season, on Nov. 13, at Gillette Stadium.
As for why the Jets are better with Favre, the feeling here is that to win in the NFL, there is no more important position to have squared away than quarterback. The Jets, in a bold move, just upgraded the position in the short-term.
Kellen Clemens, a 2006 second-round pick who obviously hasn't developed as quickly as desired, has been uninspiring. Heady veteran Chad Pennington is solid, but durability and health concerns make it understandable why some teams would be a bit uneasy relying on him in a No. 1 role.
From a Patriots perspective, the Favre acquisition also opens the possibility of signing Pennington once he is released.
If the Patriots are looking for a veteran backup -- they currently have Matt Cassel (4th year), Matt Gutierrez (2nd year), and rookie Kevin O'Connell (third-round pick) -- Pennington is an enticing option (assuming Pennington is interested in such a situation).
In late June, at Randy Moss' charity golf tournament in West Virginia, Pennington was asked his thoughts on the Patriots. Pennington was in attendance because he remains close with Moss, as they were teammates at Marshall University.
“They’ve been the standard in our league for quite some time now, seven years. They’ve done a great job," Pennington said of the Patriots at the time. "I think where the Patriots need to be commended is being able to maintain a level of excellence for such a long period of time, because this league with free agency, and so many changes each year, it’s hard to keep a core group of guys together. They’ve been able to do that."

Mike, you forgot a couple of things regarding the impact. Favre just wants to have fun, he refuses to study tape and is well known for doing things "his way" and ignoring his coaches. The Patriots can devise a D scheme to confuse him in about 15 minutes.
He's the NFL's all-time leader in interceptions for good reason. Remember how he "tutored" Rodgers in Green Bay? He'll likely do the same for the Jets. He's not a true leader but a solitary gunslinger. My main concern is after they play the Jets, the Patriots young DB's might think they're better than they really are. This move is a happy day for the Patriots.
I have a tremendous amount of respect for Brett Favre & what he has accomplished. I think he got a raw deal in Green Bay. With that said, is he in football shape at the age of 38 after spending the summer throwing to high schoolers & riding his tractor?? Last season he workied out like a dog in the off season which resulted in a great season for him. I have read in the previous couple of years under Mike Sherman he did not have the same off season work ethic & we all know what the results were. Lots of ints & 4-12 season. Its year 3 of the Tangini regime & there are no more excuses. On top of the fact he's getting 12 mill this year I would be interested in what type of cap situation the Jets have for the future?? I have a feeling the BB & Scott Pioli are chuckling in Foxboro right now.
I am absolutley thrilled the most overated quaterback of all time is in our division
The carreer interception leader of all time is what he is - by a wide margin I might add.
Vrabel hit him in the hips. Thomas takes him by the shoulders and then we will let big Vince pancake him. He will be seeing stars. I think this is great.
But - lets not hurt him so that he cant play because we want him to get 80% of the snaps and have the Jets give up a number 2 for him.
Then next year we can listen to his "song and dance" all over again. Should I play or should I go. What a big jerk he is. On second thought lets just end his year on 9/14.
Pennington will end up in Minny, completing the irony of being displaced by BF and then ending up where BF really wanted to be.
Brett Favre does not have the discipline to play in any patriot-like system. Mangini will have a hard time reigning him in and he will through lots of gun-slinging interceptions. All in all, it will make for a much more entertaining scenario than if he stayed in Greenbay for the fans :)
Appreciate the comments Lance, ampats, Zak, Dave24 and reza. I do think Favre is an upgrade over Pennington and Clemens in the short term. The more I digest this trade, the feeling I come away with is that if you are going to try to compete with the Patriots -- and Tom Brady in his prime years -- you better be bold. I credit the Jets for making a bold move. I can see where some might see it as desperation -- you can make a strong case for that argument as well. But I'm seeing more as bold at this time.
--Mike
What makes you think Pennington will be released as opposed to traded?
Brett favre will destroy tom brady...
I see this as desparation for Mangenuis and his crew. If this doesn't work, he'll be out as HC of the NYJ's.
This is comedy to the Patriots and tradegy for the Jets. You know the Madden cover curse and how Brett is on the cover this year? The Pat's will be the grim reaper of the madden curse. chalk up Pats 2 wins Jets 0 this season head-to-head. CANT WAIT!
Yeah... bills' an excellent driver... Yeah...
Brett Farve will not make much of a difference for the Jets. I'm not concerned at all. He's obviously a bit of a headcase at the moment and he's bringing the circus to NY. Whatever!
I don't think this is good for the Patriots especially since it appears to me that Brady has lost his love for football, he just doesn't seem as motivated this year. Did you get that feeling Mike?
This is AWESOME! Not only has Brett not worked out this year, he will go to a new team, new players, and a new offense. Yes, he has a ton of experience, but it will take the month of Sept to get into the groove of things in JEST land. On top of all this the media circus has now moved from GB to JEST land, and will be a total distraction to Manloser. Can you imagine his response when asked the millionth time "Did you see Brett almost complete that pass today, what a throw", or "is Brett going to practice today?". Yes, most anyone could be better than Kelly Clemons and Chad, but Favre a true upgrade that will get them beyond 8-8 -> never! Don't worry Manloser, Romeo is doing a good job in Cleveland, he might take you in around Thanksgiving when you lose your job mid season!
GO PATS!
I doubt Mangini can successfully manage the huge distraction factor this will create.. Their camp will turn into a side show, and the Jets will suffer.
I agree with Lance that Brett (the human JUGS machine) might make our DB's look better than they are, but they need to learn how to capitalize on mistakes and Brett should provide some 'live balls' in September.
I always thought Asante was better at closing on mistakes than he was at 1-1 coverage.. Now we'll see the newer guys' closing speed. This should be important this year as I think our front 7 will force mistakes from much of the league!
Let the circus begin!
Farve is a great QB and there are certainly a lot of questions surrounding how he can perform in a whole new system. I'm sure that he'll be motivated to show that he can still play and that Green Bay made a mistake by letting him go. He still has time to get prepared in training camp and there is no doubt that he makes the Jets a better team. They will certainly be more fun to watch and I can't wait to watch the Pats play him in week 2.
The Jets have rolled the dice for this year. Not only that but if Favre is a bust then they are only delaying the development of their QB position by giving this season and maybe another to a 38 year old QB.
If I were a Jet fan I think I would like the move because at least they are doing something that gives them a shot in the arm and a chance. Let's not forget that the Jets played the Pats pretty tough at the end of last year without Favre so Game 2 shapes up to be an exciting game in NYC.
Long term - it is a plus for the Patriots.. You have to cut your losses quick and in the NFL holding on to overvalued veterans is an opportunity cost. The Jets just did the Pats a favor. You would have thought that seeing the Pats let go of Damien Woody, Lawyer Molloy, Ty Law, Deion Branch, Adam Vinatieri, etc and still stay on top that the Jets would have learned something. Paying a player MORE money as they get older (not better) is not a good deal.
We Should sign Chad now. We could use him as backup.
First of all BILL, your post of saying "Brett Favre will Destroy Tom Brady" was just plain ignorant.. Log off of boston.com now.. You make no sense..
The Pats should sign Chad Pennington as the #2, if Cassell stinks it up in the nest few weeks. This is his test. I like Pennington as a veteran backup to BRADY, the best QB in the league.
good, now we can crush him twice a year. he stinks, totally over rated. wait until the jets fans see him throw 3 interceptions! short honeymoon dude
brett stinks. now the pats can crush him twice a year. this will be humor.
Boston fans crack me up, I to like the Patriots, and in the NFC Green Bay. But before you make fun of the gun slinger look at what the jets have done in the off season they have built one of the best offensive lines I have seen in a long time. The slinger will have over 5 seconds on passing downs and thats deadly with his arm . My thought is this will bring back one of the great rivalry's thats been dead for awhile in the AFC east. I can't wait these are going to be great games!
I agree with Mike, I think it is a bold move by the Jets as they need to be bold to compete this year with the patriots. I am looking forward to the increased competition in the division. As for signing Pennington, Unless BB can get some inside information on the Jets I would rather see Matt Cassel, Matt Gutierrez, and rookie Kevin O'Connell compete to be Tom Brady's backup.
Henry, why would you think Brady has "lost his love for football?" Don't judge the man on a few TMZ clips and idiotic NY Post headlines. He's gonna be the same beast as ever this year.
How many ignorant people are going to call Favre "overrated?" Yes, he has thrown more interceptions than any QB. That makes him overrated? He has also has more yardage, more completions, more TDs, more WINS than anyone who ever played the postion. Give me a break.
The Jets made a wise move for the short-term. They will be better than they were - not only because of a significant upgrade at QB, but also because they have improved their offensive line. The improved line helps Jones, it will help Brett, and it will help Coles and Cotchery. Their entire offense is better. No, it's not on par with the Pats yet - but they have made strides forward. Have the Pats?
I thought Favre was for sure going to the Bucs -- too bad for him that didn't happen. The Jets ("JEST"--heh, good one) are a bottom shelf outfit. Favre will get humbled time and again in the AFC East and not just by the Pats.
The move might be "bold" as Mike Reiss notes but I think it's also a face-slap on Chad Pennington. The Pats would indeed get the last laugh if we can sign Pennington, a possibility I hadn't considered. Pennington would surely improve stats-wise with the weapons the Pats have on offense. I think he'd be rather receptive to the possibility of throwing TD bombs to Randy Moss and others!
Here is a Cart Before the Horse Prediction, but what the heck... :-)
Pennington joins the Pats, he's deliriously happy tucking it to the Jets, Bill B puts him in for some score-padding TDs to twist the blade (Mwah-HA HA!), and Jets tank with Favre doing things his way (oops, sack, oops, another INT) and he and Eric Manjunior jawbone nose to nose on the sideline and players and assistant coaches have to break up the shoving match. :-) Oh yeah, and Manjunior is polishing his resume come week 16.
Bill, Bill, Bill Billl... Farve destroy Brady? Not in this lifetime. New team, new offense, same interceptions, same whining. Two W's for NE.
It's good to have the news in the AFC east be focused on something OTHER than what happened of February 3rd. I've been dreading those questions, so I'm thrilled the media will be onto something else.
I agree Brady doesn't not seem as into his groove this year as previous years. (missing practices?) Favre had a great year last year, but I think it was a mixture of hard work and focus (neither he seems capable of right now). This may be the year our division has arguably the best QBs in the league yet be one of the least competitive.
Mike, this is neither a bold move nor a truly desperate one. The Jets can't compete with the Pats and the rest of the cream of the AFC, regardless of Favre, and so they're just buying time till they see what' s available during or after this season. Bottom line: Favre is overrated (badly); he's coming in after training camp; he's probably not in top shape (even for his age); he has to learn a new scheme; and without a strong team player at the helm, the Jets' offense, as good as it may be, is not going to play up to its potential. Pats should sign Chad ASAP and then see if his ol' Marshall buddy can entice him to throw downfield.
If Pennington signs and Cassel is cut, do the Patriots keep 4 quarterbacks? Would O'Connell be put on the practice squad? Is Gutierrez eligible for the practice squad?
Are there any other veteran quarterback free agent the Patriots might be looking at?
And so the denial begins!
Oh Favre he's not that good anymore... sniff... interception machine.... sniff.
The free ride known as the AFC East is now officially over for the New England Patriots. Hope you enjoyed cashing that last welfare check.
To Comment #31: Is Favre bringing Ryan Grant with him? Or that game-changing defense? Or Lambeau's home-field advantage? I do think the Jets will be better this season as a result of having Favre. However, I think the Bills will be a better team. The Jets can snag third. But thank you for your (continued, I presume) obsession with the Pats and their fans.
Favre is great yet still overrated. The two are not inconsistent. He is lauded like Montana, Brady, Manning or Elway when is closer to Fouts--an all-time great, but not without some big flaws.
Woohoo! Is it Christmas already in Pats-Nation??
Brett Farvraa...goin to the Jetz is a guarantee of no super bowl. Especially in the division with the mighty PATRIOTS. The AFC is obviously the better conference in the NFL, they probably wont even make th playoffs....shame on u JETs
I'm glad that "Gangrene" signed Fav-Re. Now we get to watch Mssr. Vrabel, Thomas, Seymour, and Wilfork cave his head. My only hope is that they gag bad enough so that Mangina gets fired. I don't expect the the 'Ole Gunslinger will make the Jets much, if any better. I'm sure he'll revert back to his past habit of throwing interceptions at the worst possible time.
The Jets and Favre will prevail this year, bank on it!
Who said the Jets have "built one of the best OL he's seen" what? they signed two players that have seen better days.. Woody wasn't anything special in his prime, good but certainly not great.. Faneca was run out of Pittsburgh, he had a lousy year as did the whole OL, ask any Steeler fan...
The Madden Curse is that he got stuck going to the Jets....
The comment you should be cracking on, ML, is little Tommy Hodson's at #12.
That's exactly the kind of denial I'm talking about.
Considering how the Jets took the Pats to the wire last time with crippled Pennington, imagine how they'll do with a real QB. It's not good, Pats fans, not good for you at all.
Favre is one of those QBs who will either win you, or cost you, the game. He is a laid back, jokester, who wants to call things his own way. His new coach is a control freak. I don't see this relationship going well. It will not be long before the two are at odds, and Mangini wants to tear his hair out.
Going to be fun to watch! And we get him twice a year! I have heard people comparing this to the Moss deal, how the Jets have been trying to copy everything we do. Well, there are some key differences. First, our fourth pick wasn't conditional, all it cost us was a fourth pick. Second, Moss came at a bargain price. He either did well, or was cut loose. Third, we had good talent behind him, so that if he didn't pan out, we would be ok. The two can not be compared
Anyone think it's possible that the Jets may trade Favre back to the NFC North (bears, vikings) for a higher pick?
Whatever happens, our Defense needs to be ready for anyhting whether its Farve, Manning, Rivers, or Romo. Defense wins Championships.
I think signing Pennington would be a bad idea.
Yes, he used to play with Moss in college, but CP has no arm these days. He can't throw deep. It would be a waste of Moss' abilities.
Stick with Cassell and Guitierez and look for a return on investment.
"Anyone think it's possible that the Jets may trade Favre back to the NFC North (bears, vikings) for a higher pick? "
I can't verify, but I heard that there was a stipulation in the trade that the Jets could not do that without suffering a penalty of some sort.
To comment 41, according to NFL.com, if the Jets trade him to the Vikings, it'll cost them 3 first round picks. Good poison pill!
I do question the shape he's in, as I've read that he didn't really work out hard this offseason, and he didn't totally clear his Packers physical.
Still, if I were a Jets fan (I'm not), I'd be excited that they are at least trying to improve themselves. Nothing wrong with that. I still think the Pats have nothing to fear from this, but the Jets are making an effort, as an organization to improve their lot.
I cant see Pennington coming, because surely BB and SP will get something in return for Cassell if they deal him away.
What the heck is all the fuss about? Mr. Flip-flop will endure two J-E-T-S practices and decide to retire, again. Following his tear-filled press conference and a short stay in Ole Miss, he'll flip-flop again and sign with Tampa Bay.
Bottom line? Who gives A DAMN? With Bret it is me, me, I, I, it's all about ME!!!
If the Jets trade him to the Vikings they have to give GB 3 #1 draft picks. I don't know about the Bears.
What does it take for this to be a success? If they make the playoffs they loose a 2nd round pick. Is it worth it ifthey loose in the first round? Missing the playoffs still costs them a 3rd rounder. I think they need to win at least 1 playoff game to make it worth while. Which means they need to a top 4 team in the AFC, seems like a stretch for with NE, Indy, SD, Pittsburg, Cleveland, Cincy.
I understand why the Jets would do this, it's a media splash and they get better a QB. But in terms of wins and losses, maybe they go from 7 to 9 wins now. Favre was pretty much mistake free last year, but that was after 2 years in the Mike McCarthy system where they asked him to do a lot less. Now he's in a new offense and doesn't have the greatest of weapons to work with.
When I heard this trade, I was happy, because, Hopefully this puts JETS two years back. After readign all the posts, one thing we should not forget. Farve will have his Favourite targer with him, TE Bubba Franks.. Last time we played Farver, he could not finish the game. lets see what happen. Also. One of the post, someone says, if Farver play 80% then GB will get 2nd rould pick. In order to get GB a 2nd round pick, JETS need to make playoff as well.. Right?
I respect your opinion quite a bit, Mike, but I think you're way off base with this one. Favre is thoroughly mediocre. He has one good year in seven seasons, and suddenly he's going to turn around an awful Jets team? The media, in its typical fashion, glosses over the fact that said season is most likely an anomaly. Just look at the stats, they tell you everything you need to know. Over 50% of his passing yardage last year was YAC. His receivers comprised the best overall YAC gaining group in the NFL, better even than our accomplished group of pass catchers. Add in an excellent offensive line and a ground game that was dominant for the second half of the season (thanks for winning me my fantasy league, Ryan Grant), and you have a recipe for quarterback success, whether that QB was a journeyman or a legend. If you look at any of the statistics that evaluate contributions in terms of wins added, Favre was average at best. Favre's time in New York will be rocky, and will ultimately lead to Mangini's exit and another rebuilding effort. I'll take the always forward-looking while still competing Patriots any day.
He is definitely an upgrade over Pennington (who I do not see signing with the patriots, as there are other team that he has a chance to start for), but I'm not sure I would like the move for the jets. If he plays one more year, you are giving up at least a 3rd round pick, 2nd if you make the playoffs and he plays 80% of the snaps, for one shot at a championship. I don't think the jets, although improved, are one QB away from a superbowl bid. This could all change if he plays more than one year, but it seems like a steep price for a one year "rental."
#41...Jets won't trade him to the Vikings because they'll have to give GB 3 #1 picks if they do.
If you think Favre is going to be the missing piece to defeat a team that is coming off an 18-1 season....not going to happen. Can't wait to see how the Pats defense baits the "gunslinger" into 3 int's in week 2.
Prepare yourself as your coach trudges off the field prematurely at the hands of another New York team on 9/14. Do not concern yourself with whether the Patriot corners are fast enough but ask whether they can even catch Favre's missiles. Just ask Donald Driver what his hands felt like after catching Favre. The Dolphins may not even be a cakewalk for you this year.
Ignorant is ignoring the bad facts along with the good (cough, espn & peter king, cough):
Career Ints: 288
TD/INT Ratio 05-06: 20-29, 18-18
Playoff Record since 1999: 3-6
Season ending picks on first possession of OT (last 8 years): 2
16-18 (including 6 and 4 in two separate games)
No denying his MVP years in his prime, but he's ridden the "gunslinger" perception to the level of NFL deity, which just isn't the case.
Brett Favre, not even the best QB in Packers history.
OV-ER-RATED
hey mike-we can say on paper the jets have improved themselves.the pats are still leathal on offense.the defensive line is healthy.now our LB,s are even older, and we have rookies with no exspeariance.this is a concern.I would feel better with another good veteran LB on the roster.our secondary again rookies, and new guys.lack of exspeariance, and knowing the pats style of play.this is a concern.i would feel better with another veteran corner.I would add the O-Line,but we added some guys.so thats a wait, and see.the jets have closed the gap some on the pats, but if the pats take care of there problems now.it shouldnt be a problem.
Jets made improvements during off-season and I already expected they would win more games this year than last. Of course, media will give Favre all the credit. That being said, I expect he will win a couple for them and lose a couple for them. All-in-all, I think it's a wash.
Man I don't know how this is going to pan out. I'm a Pat's fan all the way but I do respect Bret Favre. It's certainly going to be good for ratings. Commercials will cost more for somebody. I bet it will be exciting but I don't see them beating the Pat's for the division that's for sure.
Favre's just a homewrecker.
He put his own indecisive needs above the Packers and just obliterated everything that team was trying to focus on at camp. The media circus was caused by his selfishness and trying to make the Packers bend to his every whim. Now he's going to go to the Jets for the year and totally disrupt any sort of flow they might have among quarterbacks and the system they're trying to build, not to mention the trust that Pennington or Lucas might have had for anyone in Jets management.
Favre is completely self-serving, and he's a southern dope. In a very unintelligent way, he's just running around mumbling "I thank aye wanna pluay, nah, muaybe aye don't wanna pluay.... no wuait, no wuait, aye do wanna pluay...."
And Chris Mortensen follows him around with a scooper and a plastic bag.
No More Free (etc.): I'm sure the comment you point out is stupid. I don't really care.
I actually think the Jets were very competitive last year. I believe Favre will make them a longshot playoff contender this year, with some possible high upside. However, I think he's derailing their longer term building process. It's a short-term fix that really disrupts the franchise. I think the Bills are taking the smarter approach. I'm not so sure I would be thrilled about this as a Jets fan. I guess we'll see.
I can remember not too long ago that it was actually possible to have a somewhat intelligent football discussion with Patriot fans.
it's amazing how a few superbowl wins and an impressive run of great seasons can turn an entire fanbase into a bunch of know-it-all front runners.
enjoy your pink patriots jerseys and redsox hats new england fans.
just remember... all good things come to an end.
Mike:
Are the Jets really a significantly better team with the soon to be 39 year old Bret Farve taking over for Chad Pennington? Its' true that Farve, even at this stage of his career, has more mobility and a stronger arm than Chad...and will produce more "big plays". But, he'll also throw a ton of picks (at least 20), won't be as accurate as Chad, and lacks Chad's familiarity the Jet's offensive scheme, the Jets' receivers, and the respective defenses he'll be facing in the AFC.
In short, I don't see the Jets becoming a threat to the Patriots, or a playoff team, as a result of the Farve acquisition.
Haha, nice dig on Mort there Greg. Him and ESPN couldn't be worse. Its like seeing the way UsWeekly and all those tabloids cover the same 3 celebrities.
Can Favre really turn this team from 4-12 into a top 6 team in the AFC? I doubt it. The guy is a good quarterback who is way past his prime and the Pats have bigger fish to fry in the AFC like Indy and SD.
Is anyone as excited as I am for the Chad Pennington Era here in New England.
How much would that eat at the Jets if Chad made his way up here to back up Brady?
That would be quite a story
It would be something if Pennington came to the Pats as a #2, but I still think he can start in this league and a team like Chicago or Minnesota might look long at him for that very purpose. His knock is that he doesn't throw the long ball well, but he's smart and accurate and that can get you pretty far in this league (lest we forget that's how Brady played in his first season which ended in a SB win).
Favre improves the Jets, but do they have all the other pieces in place to make a serious run? They spent some serious $$ on their O-Line so that should help protect him, but I don't think it puts them in the playoffs. Haven't really looked at their schedule this year, but I'm thinking it's got to be pretty favorable (the Pats are listed as having the easiest schedule, on paper, so the Jets must play a lot of the same teams).
As a fan, it'll be cool to see him twice this year.
The spelling and grammar on this sight is atrocious. Shows the total ignorance of Patriots fans.
Example: "Brett Favre will through a lot of interceptions."
Pennington to the Pats? Please, the guy's arm is like a limp noodle. Don't spend the cash to get a has been.
I love how Pats fans are all uniformly agree that Favre signing by the Jets is good for the Pats. I can’t wait for the day when Brady gets hurt and then we will see what a farce the whole Belicheat organization is. Belicheat is 42 – 58 without Brady and 100-27 with Brady. Pats win a crappy coach, suspect and old defense, below average run game and an average line play. The only reason why Pats win is Tom Brady, nothing else.
Jeez, Andrew, you're right, the spelling and grammar on this "sight" is atrocious. Oh wait, you meant site. As in website. THAT certainly shows some ignorance right there. But I'm guessing you're not a Patriots fan. Jets, maybe? I think we all know how wonderfully literate and urbane that little group of fanatics is.
Andrew:
Actually, "ignorance" is used mainly in the context of lacking knowledge or education regarding a particular subject. So unless you are referring to Patriots fans' ignorance of the English language, you look a bit silly. Perhaps stupidity or idiocy may have been a better choice.
It would also be wise to use the word "site" as opposed to "sight", the former being the proper nomenclature for "website" as opposed to something that is seen, the object of perception or the process of seeing.
Finally, your example is an example of Patriots fans being perceptive (while not quite grammatically correct) because anyone who denies Favre is riding the gunslinger reputation too far may not be looking at the objective data. See, post 56.
Let's talk some football and come down off our (attempted) condescending soapboxes regarding all other topics.
Ah, Andrew. Cough, cough. It's site, not sight. Shows the total ignorance of Andrew.
Hey Andrew, ever hear the expression that people who live in glass houses should not throw stones?? Yes this "sight??" Look in the mirror & you will see who is really ignorant & stupid. I can't believe all these morons that are flocking to Mike Reiss's sight which reports on everything Patriot. I guess people want to find out what is going on with the best team in the NFL.I have no interest to see what other teams sites"hello Andrew" fans have to say. Too funny, well off to Gillette.
What's the over/under on Jet's fans chanting "Forrest Gump" after one of Favre's interceptions? I give it to game 3 then it'll supplant "J-E-T-S."
The Pats are cheaters, admitted cheaters. Every game you've 'won' under BB is clouded.
Your arrogance and ignorance is amazing.
Favre WILL destroy brady
^^^ It's a site not a sight. LMAO. What a bozo.
Andrew's spelling is terrible as well.
Example: "The spelling and grammar on this sight is atrocious."
"Sight"? Really?
The spelling and grammar on this sight is atrocious. Shows the total ignorance of Patriots fans.
Example: "Brett Favre will through a lot of interceptions."
--------------------------------
"sight" or "site"??
nice spelling Andrew.
I think having Chad in at backup would be comparable to having Damon Huard back in the 02/03 season. You have someone who's played against the pats and beaten them so they have more gametime experience. If Brady did have to leave the game you would have confidence that CP could play on 1 minute notice just like Huard.
I am not sure what to make of Favre. I never liked him that much I thought he was too tempted to go off the playbook and make stuff up when playing for GB. I don't think he's bad but he can make bad decisions. Not sure how he'll work out for the Jets.
@ #62 Steve: I think the many female fans of the Pats and Red Sox are perfectly happy with their pink shirts if that's what they decided to buy, thanks. That's female...you know, as in women...? You know? No? Ah well...
@ #67 Andrew: Your wright, my freind. I want to say a HUGH thank you fore your speling and grammer chequeing. Reely I dew.
"The spelling and grammar on this SIGHT is atrocious. Shows the total ignorance of Patriots fans. "
"SIGHT"? Dear God, Andrew.
Whatever you say, brad s. I guess you missed last season (and perhaps lack common sense and intelligence).
Well #67, may I kindly suggest to you the pot and the kettle? A Website spoken of in shorthand usually is typed as " site". As far as the Jets and Mr. Favre, it is an exciting move for their fanbase to be sure, basically, Mangini has to win this year, or he will be out on his ear next year with no chance of getting hired by anyone due to his duplicity.BUT as many have stated, this is not the young swashbuckling Favre the Jets are getting.
>>> The spelling and grammar on this sight is atrocious.
Oh the irony!
I love the Pats, they're my team, but a little perspective can't hurt:
Look at these numbers. Over the careers of Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, Joe Montana, John Elway and Dan Marino, comparing number of pass attempts, to touchdowns, and to interceptions:
(#) Player (Attempts:TDs)
=======================
(1) Peyton Manning (17.66:1)
(2) Tom Brady (18.49:1)
(3) Joe Montana (19.75:1)
(4) Brett Favre (19.81:1)
(5) Dan Marino (19.9:1)
(6) John Elway (24.17:1)
(#) Player (Attempts:Ints)
=======================
(1) Tom Brady (42.35:1)
(2) Joe Montana (38.78:1)
(3) Peyton Manning (35.33:1)
(4) Dan Marino (33.17:1)
(5) John Elway (32.08:1)
(6) Brett Favre (30.41:1)
So, while Brett does rate the lowest Att:Int ratio of these 6 top-tier quarterbacks, his Att:TD ratio is right in the mix. Furthermore, his Att:Int ratio isn't really that far out of whack with this peer group. If you expand the list to add another all-time great quarterback, Johny Unitas, you'd find an Att:Int ratio of 20.50:1!
Sure Favre throws a decent number of ints, no question, but he also throws a VERY decent number of TD's! -- It stands to reason that the more you throw, the more you're going to get intercepted, but the "League Leader in Ints" is a very misleading stat. If any quarterback were to attempt 10,000 passes, even with an average att:int ratio of 33.33:1, you'd blow the record away with 300 ints! Without the context of the CPA number (Career Pass Attempts), the int number is actually pretty meaningless.
Also, the 2005 season was Brett's ONLY losing season in his 16 year career, and if you remember it unbiasedly, you'll recall that the Pack didn't have ANY running game and was so riddled with injuries that it was hiring people virtually off the street through the week and playing them on Sunday. Brett did everything he could to carry an entire squad on his shoulders, but that'll never work in the NFL, and his numbers from that year bear it out!
.....I think it is OBVIOUS.....Farve IS BETTER than ANY QB the Jets have. So yes, it makes them better. The question is: HOW MUCH BETTER?....,...counting ALL the Jets off-season moves I say they go from 4-12 to 8-8 and still out of the playoffs.......but they will be better
whoever thinks that Brett Favre is going to actually do a good job with the jets is insane, because when the pats step on the field on sept. 14th Brett Favre is going to wish he'd never been born after the pats' linebacker corps tears him up like Georgia did to hawaii he'll ask for the reserve to start on nov. 13th.
I cant wait to see Favre throw a few picks to our rookie CB Wheatley....or a nice safety blitz with Harrison snapping his head back. This guy has made it all about himself for weeks now. Once he is smacked around by the Pats, and the rest of the AFC....he will retire again, and the Jets will have NO QB for the future. But to watch Favre throw 3 picks against the Pats this Sept...man what a SITE that will be.....wait...or is that SIGHT? I can never tell. Andrew, a little grammatical help here? Andrew? ARE YOU STILL HERE ANDREW??
The spelling and grammar on this sight is atrocious. Shows the total ignorance of Patriots fans.
Example: "Brett Favre will through a lot of interceptions."

Hmmmm Andrew, since you're correcting spelling... the word is site ... not sight as in seeing. Nice try.
Interesting to read the contrast of comments coming from two different fanbases. Most Pats fans (including me) are thrilled about this move because it adds some excitement to the AFC East while at the same time not really hurting the Pats competitively. We think Favre is overrated and will do more to help the confidence of the Pats secondary than he will do to help the Jets compete for the division.
If you find yourself with some free time on your hands, check out some of the comments over at greenbaypressgazette.com. They are KILLING Packers management and threataning to boycot Packers games becuase of the trade. Just an interesting perspective different outlooks on the same trade of the same player by two different fanbases.
Hahahahahahahaha, The Jets are getting what they deserve. An over the hill gunslinger who averages as many interceptions as he does TD. Well guess what you green weenies, since this is a very different system for Farve with a whole new team, his Int avg should be way up! Chad was the man, the only one that I liked on your whole team and you have been treating him like, well you know what. He was your best chance to do well this year with your second year man coming in later this year in relief as your O’ line allowed him to get pounded into the carpet again. Now it will be Farve getting the pounding which will cause happy feet which will mean more int's. Best of Luck Chad, you are deserving of much more love than the Jet's ever gave you. The Pat's have all the QB talent they need and then some, the only reason they would have for taking Chad would be to stick their finger up at Manrat. I believe Farve will retire again before this season is over, whether officially or not, I can still picture him throwing the towel in and saying to himself, what have I done, can I please wake up now?
Yes, Favre throws INTs, but he also throws lots of TDs (and it's more like a 2:1 ratio of TDs to INTs). Simply put, when Brett plays well, the other team loses, and it doesn't matter who the other team is. This includes the Patsies, who Favre sliced and diced in 2002. The point is, if Brett has a bad year, the Jets will lose. But watch out Pats and everyone else if Brett has one of his good years (and 2007 happened to be his best year *ever*, statistically).
"This includes the Patsies, who Favre sliced and diced in 2002"
Yes, that was 6 YEARS AGO against a 9-7 team, when Favre was 32. Lets not bring up the 41-0 blowout in G.B. What happened then? Now he's 38 and mentally damaged. A guy who shuns game plans going against the best game planning coaching staff in the league? Forget it....
You people obviously know NOTHING! Brett has worked out since his retirement with a high school football team. Favre watches tape. How do you think he did so well last year. How is he mentally damaged. If I was a (cheating) Rats fan i would CRY everytime Favre plays you.
