John Lynch follow-up

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff August 31, 2008 03:30 PM

ANALYSIS

The Patriots announced today that they released veteran safety John Lynch, and in the press release, included comments from both coach Bill Belichick and Lynch.

The comments, especially from Lynch, make it sound as if the move might not be permanent.

"I have no regrets about my time thus far with the Patriots," said Lynch. "The immense respect that I've long held for the organization has been only heightened over the past couple of weeks. I am going to keep all options open and look forward with excitement to see what the future brings."

The "thus far" part of Lynch's comment seems to indicate this could be a situation where Lynch is not kept on the Patriots' roster for the opening week -- when salaries for veterans would be guaranteed -- before returning to the club after the first game.

Head coach Bill Belichick also included a comment in the team's release:

"It goes without saying but John is an all-time great safety, one of the league's classiest professionals and his elite play speaks for itself," said Belichick. "As has been the case in other situations, I would not rule anything out down the road."

  1. This *is* an interesting situation - first Lynch says he wants to leave Denver for because he isn't getting enough playing time, then he joins the Patriots for what he must certainly KNOW is not going to be more playing time (especially with the rotations the team uses). Now, if the "thus far" is true, it would look like he's going to take a non-guaranteed salary on top of that to play the season with the Patriots! Is this the action of a man who wants to wants to play for a well run team, a great organization and a legitimate superbowl contender? Lets hope so!

  1. interesting. i understand not wanting to have to pay a guaranteed salary. But facing a predominantly run oriented offense in week 1, wouldn't you want Lynch on the field in certain situations? The defensive backfield looks even riper for offenses to pick on right now.

  1. I AM STARTING TO THINK THEY ARE TRYING TO CLEAR CAP ROOM FOR THE RETURN OF TY LAW. IF THEY DONT HAVE TO GUARANTEE LYNCH'S $1.5 MILLION SALARY THIS SESO THE THEY HAVE MORE ROOM FOR LAW'S PROBABLY RIDICULOUS FINANCIAL DEMANDS

  1. I'm not real sure why you cut a guy if you really want him. His contract was not that high, so guaranteeing it would not handcuff the team. I suspect they will move on without him. That being said I have depth concerns across the board this year. CB, OL, WR all are concerns depth wise.

  1. Oh yeah....you KNOW Law wants an Asante Samuel deal...LOL

  1. This is how teams always do things nowadays in the "salary cap era". Lynch will be back and will probably be the starting safety.

  1. For what they make (owners and players) in pro sports these days, seems pretty sleazy to leave a guy off the roster for the 1st week only to bring him back but avoid guaranteeing his salary for the year.

  1. Lynch is still learning the Pats system. If he cared about the guaranteed money, he would have made a big deal about it, or not essentially verbally agree to come back week 2.

  1. THIS IS STUPID I'D WANT RODNEY AND JOHN TO GO UP AGAINST TONY AND KC THERE NOT THINKING CLEARLY.

  1. Hey, it looks like their just trying to work out the money, in view of overall team needs. Sounds to me like he'll be back at some point and that they're both on the same page.

  1. What is wrong with you people? If the Pats need John Lynch to play against KC to win we are in for a LONG season. If they are indeed releasing him in order to save cap space for the season and just bring him back next week it's a good move.

I'm not sure what is going on with Ty Law or if he would be the solution for the Pats CB issues. There is no way he'd make a big demand for salary though, he hasn't done anything recently to deserve it.

  1. ,,,,,,,,,,,,Have they signed Chris Simms yet???

  1. There hasn't been any real mention of cutting Jackson, so I'll throw one in. I think it's dumb to keep the likes of CJ Jones and Ray Ventrone (not to mention 3rd TE Stephen Spach and newly-claimed 4th TE Jason Pociask) and give up on a 23 year old burner with size and athleticism. I thought Moss was tutoring him and had good things to say. I don't get it. Jackson made some pretty athletic catches during preseason and I think he's going to prove the Pats decision to cut him wrong.

  1. Yep, everyone sitting on a message board on a Sunday night clearly knows more about football than the Patriots brass do. Holy cow. You people need to get a grip. You don't know football. If Bill Belichick says cut him, cut him.

  1. Hasn't something like this been done before as a sort of waiver-clearing trick? Temporarily free up a roster spot for a guy the Pats are afraid might get taken away otherwise?

Posted by Wax Frog August 31, 08 07:44 PM
  1. response to first poster JAMES, how are you doubting the patriots? they have won 3 superbowls and came one miracle play from a 4th and now your doubting them? could you do better? do you remember the rod rust era? or how about pete carrol? damn pats fans relax and get ready for some football! no wonder why boston fans have reputaion of a bunch of crybabies! we are on top of the world and all I hear is people complain!

    sick of it!

  1. John Lynch SUX! Free the cap space instead.

  1. I couldn't be more happier than with the latest two releases. If they are slated to come back great, but i think with what is in camp and the roster thus far tells me that speed and coverage are the issues here. Still leaving the big question is backup QB? Onward and upward, let's kick some butt.

  1. Belichick is going to go back to their old proven formula of starting slower and building each week until they start hitting their stride in November, December, and ultimately January. I anticipate a rather slow start for them. I think they're going to be 4-4 possibly 5-3 after the first half of the season and then they'll precede to run the table going 12-4 or 13-3 for the regular season. They will be playing their best football when it counts, unlike last year, and go on to win their fourth Super Bowl of the decade. No records offensive records this year. No blowouts. Just victories when they count, particularly the last one in February.

  1. I predict Chad Jackson will be at least a solid, maybe even a star NFL receiver for whoever (Dallas?) picks him up. I think he started to "get it" toward the end of pre-season. Also, any chance of the Pats getting the OL Anderson that the Bengals let go of?

Posted by Paul Tremblay August 31, 08 08:31 PM
  1. Never mind John Lynch. He can come back. The real issue is back up QB. Joey Harrington and Chris Simms are available. Cassel is a serious concern

  1. You clowns aren't really that daft are you? This is a salary move. Period.

Posted by KG August 31, 08 09:08 PM
  1. Lynch is washed up. I don't think you need to look any further than that miserable, failed tackle on the Kickoff returned for a TD in the preseason. Good riddance.

  1. OMG, this is killing me. I have been a Patriots fan since I was a little kid, but John Lynch has to be my favorite safety ever. As someone who went to the University of Georgia and played CB in high school, I say with honesty that I can't stand "Chump" Bailey, but whenever we played Denver I would watch Lynch with awe and respect. I was excited as the Colts fans must have been when they got Adam Vinatieri from us. Put Lynch and Rodney Harrison together? Opposing quarterbacks would be flipping out! God, please let this be some dumb salary thing they're pulling. I want John Lynch in a Patriots uniform.

  1. What is really surprising is that people actually think they know more about the NFL in general and the Pats in particular, than BB and Scott Pioli... This was supposed to be a make or break training camp for Chad Jackson and yet he showed very little... And John Lynch will probably be back, if not he certainly can't be looked upon as a big loss.. I'd rather have Law than Lynch anyway...

Posted by konsumers August 31, 08 09:21 PM
  1. You are all whiners & speculators, why not buy some swampland in New Orleans. Ty Law is too chunky and not worth the $$. Wait and see what BB does, he usually makes the correct decision. Now go back to the fridge, get a beer and and watch Sports Center.

Posted by Paul Rodriguez August 31, 08 09:52 PM
  1. You guys should be aware that the Chiefs' O-line is nowhere near the level it was 2 years ago. So yes, if the Pats cannot stop that rushing attack without Lynch, they are in deep trouble.

  1. Chad Jackson is going to score touchdowns for the jets or somebody else this year. I can directly point to why they cut him. In the Giants pre-season game this past thursday, he fell in the end zone on a pass route. Their was no reason for him to have fallen other than, he sucks and got jammed by placing himself in a bad position. This is bad enough, but the sprawl and subsequent roll around on the ground with out getting up and immediately tacking the db was just weak!!!

So yesterday when they were going over film,( my hypothisis (splg) ) I bet Belicheck ripped him ( chad j) in the film room, Chad is an idiot and maybe after that film session Belicheck said,.... see ya, not on my watch.

  1. Where are we? The surprise release of Chad Jackson, Fernando Bryant and the general cutting of people that maybe we didn't want to see get released, like John Lynch. How about the rookies they kept and what about Ray Ventrone and C.J Jones? Good God, what does it all mean?

You know what it means? It means they know a hell of a lot more about football than we do. The roster will be the best 53 people they can put on the field and that's it. No favorites, no special treatment. You either bring something special or you say 'adios'. As for Ty Law, he's not here for a reason and it isn't all money. So relax, the season hasn't even started.

Posted by LeeMS August 31, 08 11:37 PM
  1. i thought they liked Chad's work out and pre season games this year, the only year where he hasn't been hampered by injury. Its really sad to see such a young talent go to waste. Good luck to him with other teams ...most probably the JETS.

Lynch will be back, sure of it!

Posted by Ben September 1, 08 12:23 AM
  1. He'll be back. If not, wow. The whole purpose to get Lynch was to hold the fort down a little with Harrison. And Law shouldn't come here expecting big money. He knows this system and he should look elsewhere if he still expects to get the money he feels he deserves. If anything, he should come back the way Seau came back- help to win a championship and give experience to a young team. Everyone seems to forget that he was a Patriot before, so he knows the system. Only thing wrong with him is the money. Other than that, he's solid, though not as youthful as before and definitely not as good as replacing Samuel. God, what would've happened if those two were CBs? God love us.

  1. Releasing Lynch is such a strange move unless he really is too old to play effectively in the NFL any more. There's no guarantee that he'll even be there in week 2. If a playoff team loses a safety in week 1, they'd probably offer Lynch a much better deal than the Pats (assuming Lynch is a decent player).

Lynch is brand new to a complicated defense with new terminology and new responsibilities compared to what he's had in the past. If you were banking on Lynch being any serious part of your team, wouldn't you want him to get as much experience in the system as quickly as he could?

My guess is that Lynch just isn't that good any more. That's why Denver released him. That's why NE released him. It's no more complicated than that. Belichick probably gave him the usual lies he tells to departing players to make him think there's a chance they could pick him up down the road - though that won't happen unless someone gets injured or really stinks it up.

  1. the problem with law is he still thinks he's in his prime...i hope lynch comes back he single handeling stop the giants goaline offfence from scoring a touchdown.

  1. Daft? You people? Who you calling you people? If this is all a chess game as you say then fine. BB is the Chessmaster and more acquisitions are on the way. He won't hesitate in pulling the hook on someone who doesn't perform. Look at more changes to come to the OL if things don't pan out the first couple of series in the first couple of games. I believe Belichick will be more proactive this season due to the vulnerability to some of the positions that have changed from the off-season and up to this point with injuries as well. I agree with comedian Paul Rodriguez above that Ty Law is a little thicker and slower and I don't foresee him returning to a faster defensive scheme. In the meatime have some Chocolate Chip ice cream. =)

  1. JOHN LYNCH OFF THE BRONCOS!!!!!!!!!!!! now I have to get another jersey. Nevermind that but I certainly know that Lynch has a understandable reason for leaving the Broncos and on to a better team where he has more playing time. But why would Bill Belichick release Lynch even though he said this with his own words "Lynch is all-time great safety." That just doesn't make sense. Are we sure Belichick wasn't having a seizure or something.

Posted by Matt September 16, 08 08:59 PM
  1. better team?!!!!!! whoes record is what? looks to me as if the broncos made the right move getting rid of him....serves him rt leaving denver thinking he was going to win a superbowl....be lucky to win division! when the broncos are haveing one of their best seasons! bet he is haveing second thoughts....dont take me wrong i love lynch but i thought it was a selfish move for him and it was his decision.....and sorry the pats SUCK!!!!
