Lombardi on Patriots

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff August 29, 2008 11:00 AM

Former NFL personnel executive Mike Lombardi chimes in on the Patriots this morning on the National Football Post web site.

After reading a piece in today's Boston Globe on Thursday night's preseason finale against the Giants, Lombardi offered his take on the club from his unique perspective:

"Preseason is about being able to view sections of your team and know what you need to improve upon," Lombardi wrote. "It is absolutely critical to be honest with yourself about the way you evaluate players and what you actually have, and then to be able to make the tough choices. I suspect the Patriots will make a few surprising decisions and do a few things to improve their team before the start of the season. There is no way the Pats will stay the course. They will do whatever they think is in their best interest. I can guarantee you they will be working hard over the weekend to improve their team. One thing about NE, they are not afraid to make a tough decision."

  1. Did you really just ask that? Who knows what it is? It could be cutting a Larry Izzo or someone like that. We are not going to know until Saturday. All he is saying is that the Pats do what's best for the team, and don't let emotions or what not cloud their judgement.

  1. BB has made clear he doesn't let sentimentality interfere with his job. The phrase "surprise cut/trade" can never apply to a team he runs. That's how I would interpret the statement.

  1. Mike, as indicated above, I would love your take on this. I read the National Football Post daily and his blog trumps other national bloggers by a mile - so I DO respect his opinion a lot.

I think we can conservatively saw Cassel is gone, wouldn't actually be shocked to see Lamont Jordan as the featured back but what else would be a radical change? They do not have the time but I still think the way to go for this team is the 4-3.

  1. Releasing Tom Brady, TG! Everyone knows that! The guy hasn't played a snap of pre-season football and he clearly doesn't have any interest in football right now. Bring on Matty! Cassell for president!
By the way-I'm totally being sarcastic here-I'm interested in these tough decisions as well.

  1. If you read the Comments on the Lombardi article, some suggest Tedy may be done. That would certainly be a tough decision!

  1. Probably cutting someone that you wouldn't suspect to be cut...

    Maybe Welker too.

  1. Hobson is out, as well as Cassell and Lamont Jordan

  1. I'd love to see Bruschi go.

He's been around too long already.

  1. Obviously Hobson is gone, but I also think we could see Fernando Bryant cut as well. I would love to see a 4-3 defense. The Patriots have surprised before. Coming out with different looks and players in key positions on opening day. This is not Belichick being "sneaky" it is simply putting the team first. I think Cassell stays. I don't like it, bit I think the Patriots have no others options.

Other vets on the bubble? Mike Richardson. Is he healthy? Welsey Britt. Too many chances. Lewis Sanders. Has he shown enough?

Remember, Pioli and company have their eyes on other players around the leauge that are about to be cut.

  1. Hobson had a fine game, he looked really good at inside LB. If you don't belive me - just look at the game again. He played solid in the middle. Can't say the same for Bruschi, he really has not played well this preseason - he can get beat in pass coverage and is not a sure tackler. That might be the surprise if Tedy gets cut.
