Matt Gutierrez back at practice

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff August 14, 2008 02:16 PM

FOXBOROUGH -- Patriots players have begun to take the field for their 23rd training camp practice since July 24, and backup quarterback Matt Gutierrez has joined his teammates for the workout.

Gutierrez had missed the last three days of practices after sustaining some type of bruise in the preseason opener. This gives Gutierrez a chance to play Sunday in Tampa Bay, as he competes for the No. 2 job with Matt Cassel and Kevin O'Connell.

  1. Mike-

I see that you mentioned that Goots will be competing with Cassel and O'Connell? I've said the same thing, but does O'Connell really stand any chance to become Brady's back-up this year?

I mean, you have to think any player can compete, but for some reason, I think even if he completely out-performs the other two, he'll still end up as third string quarterback.

  1. Hi Greg. I do think O'Connell has a chance to be the No. 2. Maybe I'm naive, but if he outperforms the other two, I could envision him as the top backup.
