Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff August 31, 2008 03:22 PM

The Patriots have released veteran safety John Lynch, the team announced this afternoon in a press release. The team also makes official the release of WR Chad Jackson.

  1. Wow. The two releases this morning certainly make it clear that BB and SP are not satisfied with the team they've seen through the preseason. Still hope they are going to use the additional spaces to strengthen the OL and the DL/LB group. I am less worried about the secondary.

  1. What is going on over there? What are they down to now 42 guys..I hope BB has something on the back burner

  1. Lynch will be back. This is so his salary won't be guaranteed and he can spend more time learning the system.. They don't need him for KC. They will also be adding a couple guys today as they are 2 below the maximum

  1. This one's a shocker to me. Jackson, not so much. I hope they have something bigger cooking up now. Or are Slater and Ventrone the answers at DB and WR?

  1. You gotta love the folks who have posted here. For seven years, BB and SP were practically gods who could do no wrong and knew more than anyone in the history of the NFL. A few bad practice games and these yahoos are now questioning the genuises to whom they genuflected. I give you Nitwit Nation.

  1. BB might be out-thinking himself, or old age is finally setting in. Either way, something is wacky in Foxboro at the moment.

Never a dull moment being a N.E. fan, that's for sure.

  1. great to see our young guys made it to the practice squad.

  1. Awful, Chad Jackson was suposed to be the next Terrell Owens, instead he turned out to be Hart Lee Dykes, what a waste of a 2nd round draft pick, that they traded up for, awful!

  1. Wouldn't be surprised to see Law, or O'Neal sign soon.

  1. The Pats are making room for picking up players cut from other teams. Didn't the Steelers and Bengals each release experienced Offensive Linemen? The Pats were overloaded at WR (8 on the roster). I thought Ventrone would be the first one to go, but I guess Jackson tripping over the goal line thus giving the Giants an interception in the end zone sealed his fate. His 2 TD's the last 2 games weren't enough to overcome the negative plays.

  1. Now I do trust BB and SP they have done way more then I have. But i am really curious as to what is their plan. I mean sucks John Lynch left, but is he really gone? will he come back? Is someone else in mind to fill the roster? I know Kevin Faulk is out the first game, so they have to make room for him. I am just really curious about what is going to happen. Like someone else said, never a dull moment in N.E. and since we already have Moss and already gave Samuel away i thought all the pre-season excitement was finished.

  1. BB and SP: with Guiterrez cut, consider Daunte Culpepper, FA, to mentor Cassel and back-up Brady. "Culpepper to Moss...Touchdown" always sounded good!
C-Pepp's record: 142 TD's to 94 INT's; 63.8% completion (accuracy) and 89.9% QB rating! That blows Cassel out of the water.

  1. I agree wth BSB. As a former 20 year season ticket holder and a fan since 1960, I can't believe some of the comments. If Colvin, Law, Oneal, etc had somethng to bring to the Pats, then BB, in keeping with his objective of fielding the best team, and SP would be bringing them in. My advice to all of you is to relax and wait until this week is over. There will be a lot of tweaking to do with the last fve spots on this team. Be patient.

  1. I think thats a great move 2 release John Lynch...He's 36 not 25! I think the move towards a younger faster team is quite apparent with the moves that have been made...I also agree that Chad Jackson was a wasted second round pick and never lived up to the hype. I have a good feeling that BB and SP will make a very significant move very soon...don't be fooled by the cover of this book! Have some faith and trust in what BB/SP is trying to accomplish

  1. But when was the last time Culpepper was actually any good? Heck - I'd take Joey Harrington over him.

Posted by George August 31, 08 04:54 PM
  1. You can't be serious wit Daunte Culpepper.

    Posted by jthurst713 August 31, 08 04:57 PM
  1. Amen to comments by BSB. Relax folks. Chad Jackson had three years to prove himself and he did not. I think you'll see John Lynch back in a couple of weeks. And Bill and Scott have a pretty outstanding track record; a couple of weak performances- IN THE PRE-Season and people are losing their minds. Enjoy your weekend, crack a few cold ones, and enjoy the Sox. The Pats are going to be fine

  1. Cutting John Lynch HAS to be some BB trick, I hope. Lynch was BY FAR the best defender we had in the Giants game. I do believe in BB and SP, so I have to think Lynch will show up again soon.....geeesh, I hope so, I thought he was great.

Maybe they are freeing up cap space to get Willie Anderson and them bring Lynch back.....otherwise, I don't get it.

  1. jackson never fit and the lynch issue makes no sense . cassel is still on the team but not john lynch?.CHRIS FROM HYANNIS.

  1. I don't get it.They must know something that i don't.

  1. Gee don't people think it would be wise waiting to be critical to at least see how these things play out?

Yeah we as slobs who sit on our couches watching these games have a better understanding on how to run a Pro Football franchise.

"PATRIOTS RELEASE LAWYER MALLOY-WHAT ARE THEY THINKING?!?!"
    (How'd that work out?)

    C'mon people

  1. It would be good to have Cullpepper, but he wrote a letter to all 32 NFL teams pleading his case on why he should be their starting QB and why they should give him a look. He left Oakland because he didn't want to be a backup so I don't see him signing with the pats.

  1. "They must know something that i don't."

That's hilarious. Yes I'd say the head coach and general manager of the Patriots know a few things about the Patriots that you don't.

  1. THIS IS A HUGE MISTAKE..CASSEL ON THIS ROSTER!! WHAT THE HELL HAS HAPPENED TO PERFORMANCE STANDARDS IN NE? THIS GUY SUCKS.
    HELP!!!!

  1. It's about time that hanging Chad is no longer allowed to hang around. He had his opportunity to showcase his speed and talent....you need to mix in a wee bit of intelligence to be an impact player in this league. Obviously, Chad had two of the three.

  1. "PATRIOTS RELEASE LAWYER MALLOY-WHAT ARE THEY THINKING?!?!"

Add another... Patriots release Roselvelt Colvin.

  1. They must be a couple guys on the waver wire that caught the patiots eye. John lynch relax people this 08 not 02. Not a big loss we need 2 get younger and more atheletic on d, he been past his prime for a good 2-3yrs. Still don't understand that chad jackson move, u tellin me raymond ventrone is a better reciever than chad jackson? Please, like somebody else said that they usually have 1 or 2 cuts every year that leave u scratchin your head.

  1. making room to resign troy brown... ty law and junior seau... didn't you hear all their lockers are empty ready for them to come back! cassel will be gone soon too... lynch will be back too!

  1. Enough with the in BB and SP we trust. Are these not the guys that went out and signed Bryant and Webster who they now cut. Arent they the ones who drated Jackson (trading up) and he was a bust.

BB and SP got real lucky with Brady who has made them look so good and Vinetari who won 2 Super Bowls (what if he was a Norwood and missed those kicks???). Any remember BB in cleveland???? Wasnt such a genius there was he???

Putting all that aside do people really believe we can win with the secondary we now have? Is Ty Law (if he does come in, really the answer?)

John lynch one baffles me, as I thought he was showing something, yet Casel who is a turd is still on the team

Posted by mike August 31, 08 06:16 PM
  1. if Rosey Colvin can get real about what he is worth in the market... he could end up on the pats soon.....

Posted by Eric August 31, 08 06:24 PM
  1. I've got concerns.
I'm seeing signs that I can only describe as a team,or parts thereof, that just maybe experiencing the "Superbowl Hangover".

Next week will be huge, especially with Tom Brady...

Posted by Thomas August 31, 08 06:27 PM
  1. No need to worry!!! The pats signed a 4th Tight End today. All is well.
