Pats roster moves

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff August 26, 2008 04:50 PM

The Patriots made the following roster moves today:

  • G Stephen Neal was placed on the reserve/physically unable to perform list because of his shoulder, meaning he is out for at least the first six weeks of the season.

  • OT Ryan O'Callaghan was placed on season-ending injured reserve because of his shoulder.

  • CB Jason Webster, RB Kyle Eckel, and OL Ryan Wendell were released.

These moves get the Patriots to the 75-man roster limit.

    1. Mike, Are you sure the PUP list matters on first cut?

    1. Moving a player from the Physically Unable to Perform list and then to the Physically Unable to Perform/ Reserve list means that he does not count towards the 75 man roster. Both Neal and Ross who was on the Physically Unable to Perform list counted as part of the 80 man roster. When put on the reserve list, that means the team can't activate you to the active roster until Week 7. Neal can start practicing with the team in Week 5, and then be activated in Week 7. Ross who was not moved to the reserve list, can be taken off the Physically Unable To Perform list at anytime and start practicing with the team.

    1. well at least it's not brady's blind side that is going to be significantly weaker. I don't understand why the patriots didn't take care of this issue through the draft. there seemed to be a deep amount of talent along the offensive line this past draft and instead they went and overdrafted on linebackers, cornerbacks, and from what it seems another quarterback that has a lot of learning to do.

    1. a little surprised by the eckel move...i understand the crowd back there...but he seem to be a Belichick type of player....not too mention the Navy connection

    1. Any word on Ricky Manning Jr? Is Kyle Eckel headed for the practice squad or off to greener pastures?

    1. Overdrafted on linebackers and corners? There defense was overdue for an injection of youth. The offensive line had 3 probowlers.. cmon now,

There is a good chance both Mayo and Crable end up having a significant positive impact on the D. Thats rare coming in as a rookie under Bill B.

    1. I am surprised about Webster being cutt. Is Ty Law still a consideration? We seem extremely weak at cornerback. I hope Merriweather is back soon.

What is your take on the O Line. We just lost Neal for the first 6 weeks (5 games with the bye), and O'callaghan for the year. Will they go out and grab some vets off the wire?

    1. LOL. Let's make sure pioli and belechik get seth's advice before they make a draft move next year!

    1. I do believe it is time to cut future Patriot Hall of Famer Kevin Faulk. He is held with great esteem and respect yet he has had his day and that role needs quickness and speed

    1. Joe don't bother trying to reason with them... some people are unable to be pleased and the refute common sense with foolishness.

I thought Neal would end up on reserve pup but the O'cal to IR caught me by surprise

    1. Would love to see Guyton get a chance to be a special teams guy. Guys his size with his speed and vertical don't come along very often.
And since his number is in the 40s, why not line him up at a TE spot every once in a while. Talk about a matchup problem.

    1. Any chance at all that they will sign Seau?

    1. Yes, Belichick would keep a player solely because they played for Navy - that's how he's become the most successful coach of our generation. And Troy Brown seems to be a Belichick type player - why isn't he starting? Guess BB doesn't like guys who played at Marshall. Love a lot of these comments.

It's a better team than last year folks - faster and more athletic on the D and Capers will make them more aggressive. Relax. The only thing we know now that we didn't a month ago is that we're changing 2nd string QB's.

    1. shocked that Eckel got released. Mike, do you think they will bring him back?

    1. Kyle Eckle should be sent to the Russian Front. He should have fullfilled his navy obligation. heard he had to pay some money back but he got off cheap.

    1. This game with the Eagles will give us a good indication how the Patriots are going to perform this year....I could be wrong but I fully expect the starters to
play for 3 quarters ....its a shame about cutting Kyle Ec kles.....What is the delay on cutting Matt Cassell ??

    1. These misfortunes could not befall a more wonderful team. The Patsies can start looking forward to mediocrity this season.

    1. There were also a record number of offensive linemen drafted in the first round, so alot of that depth was used up early.

    1. Slick101:
I find it interesting that you do not mention who your team is? My guess is that deep down you know the Patriots will still be better than your team. The sad thing is, the Patriots are probably weaker this year, and are still the best team in the NFL.

    1. the patriots do plan to bring eckel back, eckel was released due to an inability to actively participate on the practice squad, due to the fact he's participated in too many NFL games. i would imagine they will resign him as soon as his hand has healed up enough to play. also, many other patriots are injured, eckel was temporarily released i think because of the patriots necessity for back ups in other spots where the head guys are momentarily injured. boston loves eckel go pats!
