Pats sign OL Mike Flynn

Looking to add depth on the interior of their offensive line, the Patriots have signed veteran center/guard Mike Flynn to a one-year deal today, according to a league source.
The 34-year-old Flynn is entering his 11th NFL season. He played the first 10 with the Baltimore Ravens. Flynn has started 115 of 134 career games. Last season, Flynn started all 15 games he played in for Baltimore.
Flynn's signing represents a homecoming of sorts for the offensive lineman, who has New England roots. He played his high school football at Springfield's Cathedral High School and went on to play at the University of Maine.
Flynn, who came into the league as an undrafted free agent in 1997 and spent time on the practice squads of the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers before re-signing with Baltimore, augments an injury-laden interior of the offensive line for the Pats.
Starting right guard Stephen Neal remains on the physically unable to perform list. Backup guard/center Russ Hochstein was hurt in the Patriots' pre-season opener against the Ravens on Aug. 7, and reserve guard Billy Yates suffered a pinched nerve in his neck/shoulder playing on special teams in the Patriots' 27-10 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last Sunday.

So Flynn was a free agent looking for work? Why did not other team try to sign him?
Probably because he is old and wanted to retire.. I wonder if he is just a body for the last to preseason games if there is another injury.
Had several teams interested, most more money than the Patsbut I read he is an avid Redsox and Celts fan since growing up in massachusetts.
hey -
i thought we signed Mike Flynn. You have a picture of Gary Busey. Some one made a mistake here.
Mike Flynn was the starting right guard for the Ravens during the season when they won the super bowl. The center they had that year signed a free agent contract the following year. So Flynn moved into the center position for the last ten years with the the team. The one thing I know about him is that he does'nt get injured and he is very smart and versatile. A Belichick type of player.
He wanted to retire as a Raven after this season, but the team released him during the last option year of his contract to make room for spending money elsewhere. Other teams tried to pick him up but he was willing to talk with the Pats.
He will def. be a solid player when he makes the team.
Flynn is a Beichick type player. Smart, versatile as well as durable. He can play guard or center. In the years with the Ravens he was probably the least penalized offensive lineman on the team. He def. has a couple of good years left in the tank.
The Ravens released him in his last option year of his contract to make room for spending. Other teams tried to sign him but he was only willing to sign with a contender. The Pats are that team and he will be a solid contributor when he makes the final roster.
Thanks Rick - it adds insight. Hope he's the player you just described.
Awesome pick up! Good job Pats!
As a Ravens fan I have the utmost respect for Mike Flynn and his ablities as a leader and a football player. He is the ultimate team player. The Ravens made a huge mistake releasing Mike during the off season as his replacement is getting pushed all over the field during the first two pre-season games. He should serve the Patriots well. His father (an avid fan & supporter) will have alot less miles to commute to attend his games.
Mike is a class act and a winner... the Pats did a great job in seeking him out and convincing him to sign... he is in the mold of a Junior Seau signing; a tough, smart, dependable leader who will serve his role well. The Black Bears and all of New England should be happy to have a native son back in town!
Great addition for the Patriots
Ravens cut him for cap money
He has Lynn MA roots also
Great pick-up for the Pats. Smart player...tough as nails.
Geez, Mike does look like Busey there. Mr. Joshua, Mr. Joshua - where are my tickets!
Mike was a very weak link on the Ravens line, he was Billick's buddy. That is the only reason why Flynn was around. The Ravens let Casey Rabach and Jeff Mitchell walk all due to Flynn being Billick's buddy.
You will find Flynn on the ground most of the time, 95% on his back the other 5% on his face, Hope you have guys on both side of Flynn to hold him up.
Nice Fitzie.
Flynn is a great guy, very smart and gregarious to hear him speak on local Baltimore sports radio. He seemed pretty solid at right guard, but not sure he ever clicked at center. Ravens QBs with Flynn under center were known for muffing snaps at least a couple times a game or getting their feet stepped on by Flynn. Probably a good insurance policy for right guard, and I agree he is tough and has some miles in the tank, but comparing him to Seau is a stretch. Junior, at his peak, was a pro bowl linebacker. Flynn is pure journeyman.

What's wrong with the Ravens line now ? Don't blame injuries because injuries were not acceptable last year. Gorden your jut a guy that't full of sour grapes who has a below average football IQ. Don't bring your sour, negative attitude to New England...We love our sports teams even through there losing seasons and we don't get personal with comments. You got what you sowed.A coach trying to make a statement and a lot of key players injured because of it.So get to the store and get some heavy duty crying towels an some brown paper bags.

Three young guys in the middle all playing in new spots. Both starting OT have been out. The guy behind them has been hurt.
You guys have a good time with Flynn, it will be laughable most of the time.
Don't worry Gordo, you can still go and drown your sorrows at the Goddess after each Ravens loss. You've got that going for you.
Hey, Mr Barr I bet you were'nt so critical during the Ravens super bowl run when Flynn started at gaurd. Its amazing how some fans forget.
Also I'm real sure the Ravens like to sign sub-par players for $2.5 mil. a year.
I guess it pays to be buddy's with the coach. LITERALY!
