Practice follow-up

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff August 25, 2008 01:30 PM

FOXBOROUGH -- Following up with some more details from the media-access portion of the Patriots' early afternoon practice at Gillette Stadium:

  • Tom Brady gets some work in. At the time media members were present, Brady stretched, ran through a bag drill (zig-zagging between bags, and then keeping his feet moving over the bags while catching a series of footballs fired in his direction), and dropped back lightly while throwing to receivers and backs without a rush.

  • Matt Light, Jason Webster, Billy Yates and Stephen Spach make returns. The offensive line received a boost with the presence of starting left tackle Matt Light. He wasn't the only player returning to the practice field after missing time because of injury, as tight end Stephen Spach, cornerback Jason Webster and center/guard Billy Yates also returned.

  • A total of 13 players not present for media-access portion of practice. Counting the two players on the physically unable to perform list (guard Stephen Neal and offensive tackle Oliver Ross), the Patriots were without 13 players for the media-access portion of the workout. The players not present included starting wide receiver Wes Welker. The others: safety Brandon Meriweather, cornerback Mike Richardson, running back Kyle Eckel, center/guard Ryan Wendell, center/guard Dan Connolly, offensive tackle Ryan O'Callaghan, center/guard Russ Hochstein, tight end Benjamin Watson, receiver Sam Aiken and defensive lineman Le Kevin Smith.

    1. I am really ashamed of the Pats effort in camp. They really lack desire except for the rookies. There is no fire after the Super Bowl upset.

    1. Might as well bring in the pom-pom girls to play, "worst team I have ever seen" in recent years

    1. In this age of information overload and the fans hunger for it, the Pats still remain mum on the injury info front. Any word on Welker and Meriweather and Aiken?

    1. My hope is, when the reg season starts the Pats will be firing on all pistons, right now they look like they are out of gas.

    1. Jeff, are you at every camp session?? I guess you are the expert.

Look, these guys have played THE MOST football over the past 8 years. The vets know what they need to do. The rookies, of course, show desire. After all, they are ROOKIES. If a rook didn't show some desire in their 1st camp, they wouldn't be in Foxboro too long.

Chill the funk out dude. Take a pill.

    1. Jeff.....the reason there is no fire is b/c ITS THE PRESEASON....look at Michael Strahan last year....retired then bam at the end of pre-season he comes back and is a force for t he regular season...These vets know what they are doing and they are preserving their bodies for the regular season. I don't blame them at all. You must of been to both of the Pats pre-season games and yelling at the sidelines for the starters not playing huh??? haha.....regular season is when it counts - Sept. 7th......let the games begin.... GO PATS!!!!!!!!!!

    1. Ryan you mean OH NO i dropped it again Watson.
      Matt Light a boost?
He is more overrated than reggie bush in the draft.
I guess with what has been out there so far he is.

    1. Rog,
I guess no one is good enough for your team, maybe the Pats should place you in charge of personnel since you have all the answers. Do you just offer bogus opinions or do you have solutions as well?? How many drops did Watson have last year?? In his career?? Watson is a very good NFL TE and a very productive one at that when he is healthy. In 2006 he had 49 catches for 643 yds and 3 TD's in 13 games. Last year he had 36 catches for 389 yds and 6 TD's in 12 games. I think he compares very favorably to Dallas Clark who had 58, 616 and 11 in 15 games last yr. Their career stats receiving per game are very similar, health is the only question with Watson not talent and drops.

No as far as Light is concerned I think his career speaks for itself and he is a definite upgrade. Last year he was a Pro-bowl and All-pro LT and he rarely needs help which allows the Pats to help out Kaczur on the other side who needs it. In my eyes he is irreplaceable and makes the entire OL better. You can't find many LT's available in the NFL and I bet many teams would like to have him on their team. Light is strong and he is athletic. He is a super run-blocker and maintains leverage with good hand use and positioning. He also has excellent quickness to kick step in pass pro. He is very quick laterally and has good balance. He has good knee bend and active hands which are key for OL. He also can get to the 2nd level and get the LB's and DB's. He is a smart and knows how to handle stunts/twists. Light is a damn good football.

    1. Guys -- calm down -- this is preseason and Brady has not taken a snap.

They will be ready for the opener. I guarantee it! These pre-season losses are actually good for the team - IMHO.

    1. patriots will be mediocre this season

Posted by bob August 25, 08 09:53 PM
    1. Ryan, while I think you underestimate Watson, I agree that the veterans on this team would help everyone understand that the first snap of preseason isn't as important as the first snap of week 1 - 16.

I would even add to that by factoring in training. If anyone thinks they look tired, they played on a short week are they are probably "training through" these games. What I mean by that is that, though they may be walking through the day before, they likely aren't concentrating as much on that week's game as much as they are learning the playbook, getting in shape and saving themselves for the season at the samr time.

    1. Yeah guys, the sky is falling. It's a long drop off the bandwagon, might sprain something. Favre's playing for the Jets - now that would be a good team to support this year... Go for it. And while you're at it - the Angels look unbeatable. Belichick has no idea what he's doing, Pioli would rather be in Miami and the beer's expensive at Gillette. Even Gil Santos has lost his edge.

Don't even bother supporting this team unless you can be certain they're going to win - it's the bandwagoneers motto. Too many issues for all the Chicken LIttle's.

    1. With everyone giving up on this team so early, does this mean I can finally get some tickets this year? Maybe some yuppie who would rather polish his BMW on a Sunday afternoon can sell me his corporate season tickets to one of the games?
Do they look good right now? No, not really....do they ever look great in pre-season? Not really....Are they using their base packages and not throwing any "wrinkles" at teams? Yup.....lets see how they do against the Chiefs when it counts......since they will only win 5 games this season, anyone have tickets to sell?
